Hi! :samueldr-1:

If you want to know about the projects I'm working on, look here:

Contacting me? Maybe here, or else:

I may follow back, I may not. I curate my feed heavily to make it consumable. I do not drink from the firehose. I might even follow people and mute their re-whatevers, or them entirely. When I mute, it does not mean I disagree.

If I follow you, I don't expect a follow back.

Matrix once again is not able to actually do the one thing it ought to do as an instant messenger, quickly and reliably transmit messages.

I know that this is a matrix.org failure this time and I really should move off that server, but on the other hand my motivation for self hosting that pile of misery is not increasing with each of these incidents. Doesn't help that the migration story is still pretty much non existent

samueldr,
@samueldr@ap.samueldr.com avatar

@piegames like I hinted at in a thread of mine, the issue here is that it's federation between silos. This is not useful for the end-users. There is no way to "be yourself", your identity is still tighly coupled to a silo.

I personally think that it shouldn't count as federated when the identities are this tightly coupled to the silo'd operating machinery :/

You open your eyes. Somewhere in the distance, a shape is visible.

Something concrete to look at, a concrete timeline. Still not out of the wood, but looks promising.

Hey, anyone on the NixOS subreddit. Note that no one from the NixOS community moderates the avenue. It is not an official location for NixOS discussions. And yes, individuals are now adding more FUD to the fire they lit. Again and again. Froggo's sad and hot.

Using @matrix at scale isn't fun. There are way too many matrix moment™ situations to count.

And now it was discovered that maybe there's a problem where banned users can still read rooms with their banned accounts?

Seriously, has anyone using ever been involved with moderation?

Did someone hack me and put SMBIOS in my ARM?Though, to be more fair, SMBIOS is not a "BIOS" thing, nor a "PC thing".

When booting using UEFI, the SMBIOS data can be present. U-Boot can be configured (and imo it should be the default) to present information as SMBIOS tables.

My intention initially was to be a goofy jab at using the (perfectly fine) /proc/device-tree info.

Got my old Xeon back online for the first time in a bit. The power supply got knocked out by a storm so I had to buy a new one. It's at this point I learned I have a four-year old version of PopOS on this thing

samueldr,
@samueldr@ap.samueldr.com avatar

@ernie neat, got one now re-used as a NAS (by shoving a 5×3.5" cage in the 3×5.25" bays). "Rocking" an E5-1660 (v1), and way too much RAM at 64GiB.

Though, configurations vary wildly, what's the CPU like on your setup?

@ernie what sort of old Xeon is it?

Abandoning the community because of the loud voices of a few individuals going against the wishes of the community is giving them all of it on a platter.

Fight.

Ask for change.

While energy intensive, it is not okay to let a few people's vile act of shitting on the front porch win. Come fetch the hose in the shed. We can hose it clean.

Slightly tempted to invest in a new mouse for my desk, to replace the £20 off-brand gaming mouse I've been using for... a long time

(How long? Well, you may remember the blog posts I wrote about hacking its firmware and unbricking it.. in 2018)

Just thought to let you know a , and trick:

If When you end-up blowing some WIP stuff away via a bad git manip, nix-diff can help you out.

For example, take a known good revision's store path for your NixOS system build, and nix-diff $that /run/current-system. Paired with nixos-rebuild test, you can try and guesstimate what you need to do to end-up in the same previous state.

Seriously... the Linux Foundation apparently decided to subscribe me to all its newsletters in the past few days, and the unsubscribe link is "expired" (broken, really).

I never subscribed to any of them, and I know the source of why they got an e-mail address. Yes, some other org somehow is responsible here. Ugh.

a x86 computer where it's usb-c port is used to reflash bios by connecting it to a computer and use fastboot flash boot boot.img

samueldr,
@samueldr@ap.samueldr.com avatar

@danct12 fun fact: the chuwi hi10 pro (and similar cherry trail reference design tablets) can run fastboot from the bios in two pretty cursed ways. Though none allow replacing its platform firmware (bios).

You can (1) boot any [specially crafted] UEFI program from the DNX Fastboot mode. And then (2) use the Intel fastboot program to uh... just fastboot stuff.

Some notes here:

So you could maybe do it in a contorted way by instead making the fastboot boot flasher.efi, which in turn would do the flashing!
