Anyone got the Philips Hue Contact Sensor or Eve Door & Window Contact Sensor and knows of any pros/cons? I've been looking to get one of those two specifically because I donโ€™t want to buy a new bridge, but I donโ€™t know which of the two to get.

@simonbs The latest Aqara door/window sensor works with any Matter Hub via Thread including HomePod or Apple TV.

Conversely to the colors on the box and bottle caps, Cliff (2024 Special Edition) appears to be a more saturated, lower shading ink than the standard Lamy Blue Black.

Every update adds AI features designed to avoid reading or writing email, while the Mac app gets slower and flakier as an actual email client. Might have to jump back to Mail.app until supports IMAP/JMAP (hopefully someday ๐Ÿ™).

@pat The last time I took stock of them all I preferred Spark by a very narrow margin, and I feel theyโ€™ve regressed too much since then. https://kevinyank.com/posts/email-apps/

Sent my 2-week-old @playdate in for warranty replacement in mid-September. When I chased @panic for an update a few weeks later, they said they were โ€œmaking changesโ€ to how they handle warranty replacements, and hoped to ship mine in โ€œearly Novemberโ€. I had to chase them for an update again when they missed that date, and now theyโ€™re just saying โ€œsoonโ€. ๐Ÿ˜ž

sentience,
@sentience@hachyderm.io avatar

@playdate Thanks for the context! That added detail really helps me understand what went wrong here, and feel less neglected as a customer. From the emails Iโ€™ve been getting, I had the impression Panic initiated the changes and customers like me were falling through cracks. I get not wanting to shift blame, but in this case it really helps to have the complete picture. ๐Ÿ’œ

What companies are good sources for buying fountain pens? Looking to buy a belated birthday present for my wife.

And for myself, looking to find a source for dip pens, papers, and inks. Thinking of returning to calligraphy after a hiatus of 50 years.

[edit: I'm in the midwest United States]

sentience,
@sentience@hachyderm.io avatar

@jetton @paradoxmo Goulet Pens has excellent selection, customer service, and customer education (check out their YouTube channel). Other good general stockists in the USA include Pen Chalet, Anderson Pens, Vanness Pens, and Endless Pens. If youโ€™re looking for something specific, there may be better specialist retailers.

Itโ€™s also worth supporting a local brick-and-mortar retailer if you have one in your city.

And another question! I want to add a blog to a static site. I want to use the same template as the static site. It needs very few features! I just want to post entries and have it update. I'm finding everything is very complex, when I just want Markdown or HTML inserted into a standard block within a pageโ€ฆ

@glennf @rosemary Hereโ€™s a vote for @eleventy! Itโ€™s like Jekyll but much more actively developed these days, and based on JavaScript, which youโ€™re more likely to be comfortable with than Ruby.

Another 2023 special edition release from , and this one I hadnโ€™t seen rumoured anywhere: the dialog cc All Black. I loved the studio All Black in 2018, and the regular editions (Dark Blue and Piano White) are lovely. Looking forward to seeing this in the flesh!

Missing product: a very small battery backup UPS that can deliver a full 10A to (say) a NAS for just the second or three it takes the house to switch to battery during a grid outage. You can get high-current/high-capacity and low-current/low-capacity, but not high-current/low-capacity.

sentience,
@sentience@hachyderm.io avatar

@chendo SolarEdge EnergyBank (DC-coupled, unlike PowerWall, though Iโ€™m not sure thatโ€™s relevant here). When we get outages due to weather taking down a power line or something, the lights go out for 1-3 seconds. According to the docs Iโ€™ve read, this is as designed.

Much less well-coordinated than the worldwide drop of the scala majestic jade earlier this week, both the studio rose matte 2023 Special Edition, which matches the marketing photo out of China that I spotted back in January, and the aion deep dark blue 2023 Special Edition seem to have dropped at a couple of online retailers. https://kevinyank.com/photos/g6zli/

Looking for opinions on the MX Keys Mechanical Mini for Mac from people whose opinion I trust on this matter but maybe the MX Keys is too boring for @imyke ๐Ÿ˜„

sentience,
@sentience@hachyderm.io avatar

@simonbs @imyke I have it. Love it. Came from a Das Keyboard and it feels like the perfect compromise between small/thin and clicky. I went for the Brown switches version, and itโ€™s klicky enough to be satisfying while not clicky enough to ruin Zoom calls.

sentience,
@sentience@hachyderm.io avatar

@simonbs @imyke I did have to put the Unifying Receiver on a USB extension cable before it was reliably lag-free. Plugged directly into my Caldigit TS4 it suffered from interference.

Last yearโ€™s scala infinite orange limited edition (1,350pcs) turns out to be the first of an annual tradition! Today Lamy released the scala majestic jade limited edition (1,500pcs) at retailers worldwide (except Australia, which trails behind as usual). Iโ€™m surprised that the size of the edition has increased, since infinite orange didnโ€™t sell out and is now being discounted all over the place. I continue to love the scala even though I agree itโ€™s over-priced.

@MonaApp A longstanding issue that I have been meaning to report, is that on Apple Watch when I have multiple notifications stacked up, they all show with the profile picture of the first notification in the list. In the attached screenshot, the Factal News notification is showing with Tim Rileyโ€™s profile picture, since Tim Rileyโ€™s post is the oldest notification in the stack.
