Something that puzzles me - people who switch from one DAM to another, like Lightroom to Capture One: None of them have compatible sidecar formats, so what happens to your entire history of edits? Do you just convert everything to JPG and "lock them in" to a look forever? Or just start over and leave the old images behind?

@kboyd Interesting. What’s your take on Darktablensomfar? Do you give up much functionality?

I rely heavily on having everything in the cloud, accessible to LR Mobile, and posting from there. It’s hard to imagine using a system that wasn’t cloud based and didn’t have a mobile app. But free is mighty appealing.

@shacker I haven't taken the leap yet; planning to do that later this year as an experimental phase in my photo project

Joshua Tree 2024
Amy and I spent the first days of April in Joshua Tree, and had an amazing time exploring the boulders and cactuses (monzogranite and cholla).

The hikes there are mostly short - pull over, do a mile or two, get back in the car and find another. But some are longer, like the day we veered off the Split Rock trail to find the Miners' Boulder Cabin, which gold rush miners created by finding a natural

Norway is one of the coldest countries, but also has the highest adoption rate in the world, but they don't have charging debacles like the one making the news here recently. No big mystery - comes down to user education and better infrastructure. We'll get there.

The Minimalist Approach to Photo Collections
I wrote a thing! Common advice for managing photo libraries is to "Keep everything, because you never know." I have the opposite philosophy, and finally wrote it all down.

Seems odd that there’s an official GMail app for mobile, but not for desktop. I mean, the web UI is very good, but an app would be better. Standard mail clients can talk to gmail, but with missing functionality. There’s only one app built on the Google mail API (Mimestream) but it’s yet another subscription.

@kboyd Is it? Then why is there a native mobile app?

kboyd,
@kboyd@phpc.social avatar

@shacker The purpose of mobile apps is to kill the idea of web apps.

This sounds like a contradiction, but I don't think it is. Think of how macOS has been getting further and further locked down & moving towards mobile concepts.

Under the banner of usability, control is being taken away from users.

(These two posts sound like BS, and they absolutely are. But there may be a kernel of truth.)

Up close, I was captivated by how tenuous a grip each little parachute had on the mother stem - so ready to leave home and fly away at the slightest hint of a breeze from your lips.

One could make the case that companies that don't have AI CEOs will fall behind companies that do. And that countries that don't have AI presidents are going to fall behind the countries that do. You see where this is going.

What is the point of spam like this? I mean, seriously what's their strategy? No link, no pitch, no typos, nothing but crude dada lettering. So weird.

There's an excellent ActivityPub implementation based on Python/ rather than Ruby/Rails called Takahē', and its codebase lead is looking for someone to become a lead maintainer for the project. Andrew Godwin is a primary Django contributor and a top-notch coder. If I had free time for coding, I'd love to. Hope you can!
