I am actively seeking Creative Commons filmmakers to promote and support on New Ellijay Television.

I want to do an Open Media block.

So far, though, I only have a few pieces for such a block, and I just ruled one of them out (see https://retro.social/@ajroach42/110485819058195851 if you're curious.)

So I'm looking for more!

skyfaller,
@skyfaller@jawns.club avatar

@ajroach42 I still think that Creative Commons screwed up big time by creating the NonCommercial versions of their licenses at all. They are incompatible with CC licenses that allow for commercial use, causing a major fracture in the community. Imagine if GPL code were incompatible with AGPL or LGPL! It's just a massive own goal.

I'm sure they were worried allowing commercial use would limit uptake, but I think incompatibility limited uptake just as much.

The student film I worked on is NC.

skyfaller,
@skyfaller@jawns.club avatar

@rticks @ajroach42 That's understandable, but corporations aren't actually afraid to violate the legal rights of small-time creators who can't afford an army of lawyers. Look at what's happening with LLMs and "AI art": corporations are just stealing any work on the Internet, regardless of license.

Corporations still profit from your work if you post it on any platform they control, such as YouTube or Instagram, and we should have worried more about that.

Someone mind reminding me why I bother writing FOSS when people are going to just yell at me anyway?

Really, why do I bother. Maybe it's better to just not spend any time on this and let proprietary privacy-invading junk be the only game in town because at least those workers get paid for being yelled at, I get nothing.

Constructive feedback, sure, very welcome. Yelling at me isn't.

skyfaller,
@skyfaller@jawns.club avatar

@SylvieLorxu I’d just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as yelling, is in fact, GNU/yelling, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus yelling. Yelling is not an operating system unto itself, but maybe if people yell harder and harass more people, it could be...

Do I really need Google Analytics on my websites? They keep sending me emails to migrate to GA4 and it just seems like ... a lotta work

skyfaller,
@skyfaller@jawns.club avatar

@PurpleCar @ordinal Have analytics ever caused you to change your website or do something different? If not, then I think it's safe to just dispense with analytics entirely.

If you do actually consider analytics to be actionable, then you might want to try some open source privacy-preserving lightweight analytics, like GoatCounter: https://www.goatcounter.com/

Or Plausible: https://plausible.io/

What is the best #weather source that offers hourly #forecasts of #humidity? Given the increasing dangers to humans from high air temperatures in humid conditions, I want to keep an eye on wet bulb temperatures: https://www.psu.edu/news/research/story/humans-cant-endure-temperatures-and-humidities-high-previously-thought/

Apparently Apple weather offers this, but I don't have any working Apple devices these days. On my Android phone, neither Google Weather nor Carrot Weather seem to provide humidity predictions at adequate resolution for me.

skyfaller,
@skyfaller@jawns.club avatar

Even better would be a source that forecasts temperatures directly, since that's what I'm trying to calculate for safety reasons: https://www.nbcnews.com/science/science-news/wet-bulb-temperature-weather-average-climate-human-heat-wave-rcna27478

I have an Android app that tells me the current wet bulb temperature at my location, Weather Feel, but I want to know what the wet bulb temperature will be in the future so I know when it is dangerous to go outside.

skyfaller,
@skyfaller@jawns.club avatar

@xcolour Thank you! Good old NWS. This is useful to have.

Not gonna lie tho, it's really hard to read these graphs on my phone.

skyfaller,
@skyfaller@jawns.club avatar

@ai6yr Ventusky considers humidity a Premium layer, which costs $6.99/year. I could be convinced to pay, but while I'm evaluating options I don't want to pay for every source I'm evaluating.

There appear to be multiple apps called Windy in the Google Play store, do you mean "Windy.com - Weather Forecast"? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.windyty.android

skyfaller,
@skyfaller@jawns.club avatar

@tikaro I would really appreciate that! I have a lot of tricks for making myself comfortable in hot and humid temperatures, what I'm interested in is when a risk of dying appears and I should stop treating it like a game.

Also I personally would love one for West Mt. Airy ;-)

What troubles me still, a year and some after finishing “The Ministry For The Future,” is that this kind of just-so handwaving on Stan’s part was taken seriously – remains, if anything, the current gold standard for thinking through the contours of our crisis in speculative or imaginative form. But it’s ducking every question that matters, every last one.

skyfaller,
@skyfaller@jawns.club avatar

@adamgreenfield @edsu I agree, The Ministry for the Future is a fatally flawed book, and I find it very concerning that it's reputedly one of the best examples of speculative fiction tackling the climate crisis. Please tell me your favorite movie and how you'd insert a dance number into it

skyfaller,
@skyfaller@jawns.club avatar

@checkervest Waking Life is my favorite movie and it already has some dance sequences.

But because of the scene from the Terminator TV show where Summer Glau dances ballet, I really want a scene in Terminator 2 where John Connor teaches the Terminator to dance the coolest 90s dance he knows, and it's so infectious that Sarah Connor can't help joining in, and liquid metal guy shows up to kill them but also gets distracted by the dance and has to leave to recover his composure...

@evan@cosocial.ca avatar

In Dungeons and Dragons, how often should a member of the party die permanently?

skyfaller,
@skyfaller@jawns.club avatar

@evan I said once every 150 sessions, because I feel like if you lose a character more than once a year, it gets hard to make them really deep (and have their deaths mean something).

I didn't say 50 sessions because you also lose characters to campaigns ending for real life reasons, not plot reasons; so character death should be rarer than it maybe should be if all campaigns were 100% reliable.

It's been a long long time since I had any confidence that I knew what the world would look like in a year or two. I mean, that was probably always the case, but I feel like in the past there was at least some sense of what the world was likely to be like, barring so-called "black swan" events.

Now it's black swans, all the way down.

skyfaller,
@skyfaller@jawns.club avatar

@charliejane I know what the world will look like in a year or two: it will look worse, in most respects. We'll keep receiving bad news for climate justice, public health, democracy & human rights, gun violence...

I'm optimistic. Humanity can turn this around and make our planet a better place; but we have lots of momentum heading the wrong direction, and it'll take more than a couple of years to start significant positive trends. And it'll take mass organizing on a scale we haven't seen lately

It's amazing that Reddit, having watched the fallout after Twitter killed off their third party developers, would go on to say, "You know what, that's an excellent idea and we should do it too!"

It seems their new API pricing scheme might very well be a deathblow to @christianselig's excellent Apollo client (along with tons of others, I'm sure).

https://old.reddit.com/r/apolloapp/comments/13ws4w3/had_a_call_with_reddit_to_discuss_pricing_bad/

skyfaller,
@skyfaller@jawns.club avatar

@bigzaphod @Sandywb @christianselig For the same reason corporations recently copied each other in laying off workers, even though there's lots of evidence that hurts profits in the long term: control and power are more important to capitalists than profits.

If their power grab fails and kills the company/product, then they can go scorched earth and make sure no one else rules or benefits either. If their power grab succeeds, then they have more absolute power. They win either way.

If you somehow came to a point where you had to battle your exact replica, what would be your go to move? (for the purposes of this poll we're only going for violence, I feel like "make out with them" would be a popular response here otherwise)

skyfaller,
@skyfaller@jawns.club avatar

@checkervest I would try to trigger my replica's reflexes from when we took Tae Kwon Do as a child, like get them to attempt a karate kick. Since we haven't been exercising or stretching, and we definitely haven't been practicing high kicks, they would fall over and/or hurt themselves, and then I'd have my opening.

Are there any good designed for more than two players that are good to play , i.e. not likely to be blown away by the wind?

When I asked for a wind-resistant board game at the local board game shop (7th Dimension Games), they suggested Hive, which looks like fun for two players, but I often chill with more than two people. Notice the solid game pieces that aren't going anywhere, and no board to be caught by the wind. (I don't care so much about portability, on my porch.)

skyfaller,
@skyfaller@jawns.club avatar

It seems to me that basically all popular board games for more than two players use both a light cardboard board and cards for randomness or deck-building, both of which are likely to be carried away by a stiff breeze.

Off the top of my head, I can think of, like, Chinese Checkers. But it's kind of old hat and I'm not sure how many people are excited to play it now. Is it even a fun game? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_checkers

Parallel universes are real! You shall be sent to live in one... forever.

You will get a choice between 5 universes that each have a similar collection of languages though technology & culture may be very, possibly hazardously, different.

To make your choice you may request one (1) kind of typical artifact. This will be fetched from each universe, you may compare to make your choice.

Electronics will be disabled. If the artifact doesn't exist... you get nothing.

What do you request?

skyfaller,
@skyfaller@jawns.club avatar

@futurebird The most common item used by the average person to reduce the spread of transmissible diseases.

Basically, I'm trying to figure out if they have transmissible diseases, are aware of germ theory, have a concept of public health... And what sort of disease scares them the most! The obvious problem with this approach is both civilizations that have eliminated disease and ones that don't care to prevent disease will return nothing.

evan, (edited ) to random

You have a choice between two products. Both are within your budget. One has a prestigious brand; the other has good value, that is, quality for the price. Which would you choose?

skyfaller,
@skyfaller@jawns.club avatar

@evan I said "value usually", because there are often situations where you can't consider the product in isolation.

One situation where the brand may matter more is if you need people to help you repair/maintain the product. The prestigious brand may be easier to find parts and knowledgeable repair people for, even if considered in isolation the value product is better.
