For , on this day in 2019 I was at The Bourse, which was a bustling "food hall," with multiple vendors I loved. There was a bar that served excellent non-alcoholic shrubs, and a great fresh pasta stall. Has it recovered at all yet? Last time I stopped by it was dead and the stalls were empty.

COVID-19 hadn't happened yet, and normal people didn't know it was going to happen (despite Cassandras who knew we were not prepared for the next pandemic).

There was karaoke and Mario.

Serious question: when and in which contexts did calling people "individuals" emerge as a common practice, as a synonym for people? Or "an individual" for "a person"?

I ask because I'm noticing it in student writing, and I associate it with police-speak. I don't know if it's in some corners of social science or medicine too

??

skyfaller,
@skyfaller@jawns.club avatar

@inquiline @billseitz Paul Simon wrote about a mean individual "Stranded in a Limousine" in like 1977. Could be prosecutorial and cop language, given the context: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MNbKF-S1JH8

But I feel like I've heard "individual" used in lyrics where it wasn't cop language, so maybe it's just from a different time and place and the cycle is coming back around?

skyfaller, (edited )
@skyfaller@jawns.club avatar

@inquiline @billseitz "Tenement Funster" by Queen (1974):

I've got a way with the girls on my block
Try my best be a real individual
And when we go down to Smokies and rock
They line up like it's some kind of ritual

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0E2mjJvBKs8

I think it crops up as a kind of countercultural term, opposing the individual vs. society. (Now that I think about it, this could also be prosecutorial / cop language, reclaimed as a sign of rebellion.)

skyfaller,
@skyfaller@jawns.club avatar

@inquiline @billseitz How about "Screaming Skin" by Blondie (1999)?

"I'm a multicellular individual
You're way out of proportion!
We've got the hemodynamic connection
Don't call me germ!"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FO7rT1RQujM
https://songmeanings.com/songs/view/77464/

Frankly I have no idea what this song is about, so I can't really speculate as to what the source of "individual" is here. Is it just contrasting the concept of "individual" with being multicellular & therefore made of a vast multitude of parts? Is it medical?

@Seirdy My favorite temporary Internet subculture was Snakes on a Plane, which (as I remember it) disappeared the moment the movie came out, because the movie was neither good enough nor bad enough to justify building your personality around it. It could never live up to the sheer audacity of the title.

It was a perfectly OK movie. I liked the music video for the theme song by Cobra Starship.

What's the Git GUI of choice for Git newbies nowadays? I'm trying to help out someone who wants to contribute to a GitHub project.

@tomodachi94 @alcinnz I realize that my intern and I may not be typical, but my intern had never used git before and I got her started using gitui: https://github.com/extrawurst/gitui

Yes, this is a TUI, not a GUI, but I think people who cannot use the command line should consider not using git.

People of Mastodon!

I'm researching the growth of ebikes ...

... in cities around the US

I've talked to many people who love them!

But also want to include the perspective of folks who have concerns ...

... i.e. about the speed and weight of ebikes in accidents with pedestrians or other cyclists, and the like

If anyone has thoughts they wanna share, ping me! I'm all ears: clive@clivethompson.net

Pass this along if you know anyone else with perspective they want to share

#fedibikes

skyfaller,
@skyfaller@jawns.club avatar

@clive I do not have a car and use e-bikes as my primary mode of transportation. I think they're great, and in terms of safety, I'd rather be hit by any e-bike than any car.

That said, e-bikes can legally go places that cars cannot legally go, so there are situations where I could be hit by an e-bike where cars are an unlikely danger. I worry about any bicycle going over 20mph on the same infrastructure as pedestrians, non-electric road bikes included, and e-bikes are heavier than road bikes.

It's sad how much of this 1999 song is still relevant (basically all of it, aside from dated references like answering machines). Reminds me of Joan Jett's jacket from ~1981, with all of the pins on it like "keep abortion legal" that still feel timely. Follow this up with RATM and get angry enough to make changes

This is a question from @RossA that I had missed from a while ago:

Q3. I'm currently struggling to find the ‘mojo’ to get out cycling regularly. What do others do to keep the cycling fresh and fun?

(If I've missed your question before, don't feel bad if you need to remind me as I have missed a few. Using the BikeNitePQ hashtag helps)

@nickzoic @meganL @ascentale @RossA A3: I stopped to eat an apple on my bike ride home today, and I saw what I'm pretty sure is a warbling vireo.

I think bike commuting is a great way to bird watch; you can just stop when you hear birdsong you don't recognize, and your mode of transportation is quiet enough you don't drown out the birds.

EDIT: Also sign up for nature walks in parks you haven't visited before, then use your bike to get there.

skyfaller,
@skyfaller@jawns.club avatar

@ascentale @RossA A3: I hesitate to recommend a potentially addicting game, but I used to be a heavy player of AR game Ingress (predecessor of Pokemon Go): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ingress_%28video_game%29

You travel to real world locations to take in-game actions, which made me visit places I never would have otherwise, like random cemeteries, or main streets that aren't on my regular commuting corridors.

Bicycles are very powerful in Ingress, especially in cities where bikes are faster/nimbler than cars.

skyfaller,
@skyfaller@jawns.club avatar

@trouble @ascentale @RossA Yep, I was also Enlightened (green team). Good to see a fellow frog on Mastodon 🐸

The Enlightened community is great, but frankly I recommend joining whatever team is the local underdog (unless your friends are on the other team). I don't see the point of helping a team that's already winning win more. If one team wins too hard and the other team gives up, it makes the game a lot less interesting. (ENL is permanently behind in Philly, AFAIK.)

yeah moss is great but how about a vascular plant that has basically ... gone back to the way of the moss...

Azorella compacta

It's... it's a carrot that has given up on having leaves...

Imagine a hostile planet with plants like this... could you tell that they once grew in less cold and arid climates? What if flora of the twilight days of a planet look like the earliest life... but when you look closer there are abilities, and structures that tell their history....

It looks exactly like a tuft of green moss.

@GrayGooGirl @beeoproblem Sadly DuckDuckGo is also pushing AI, but at least it hasn't replaced their default search yet. We're going to need a new crop of search engines and equivalents that are willing to draw a line in the sand when it comes to AI (and other ethical issues).

@zed@mstdn.party avatar

The best strategy Dems can use to "save the planet" is to quit talking describing their plans as "saving the planet.” Doesn't matter what the policy is, you've immediately just turned off Republicans.

But most "green" laws are also better for the economy, or otherwise increase the quality of life for impacted residents. Talk about those things.

skyfaller,
@skyfaller@jawns.club avatar

@zed Once you give up on both empathy and reality, no strategy for promoting anything good is going to work. If you say "this helps people directly," Fox News can just say "But it helps the wrong people, people who don't deserve to live", or just make up their own facts.

I don't think clever maneuvering will allow you to deliver fact-based policies that actually help people if a party successfully convinces the people that helping people is bad and truth is lies.

@ascentale What is the most sustainable bicycle currently in production? I asked Mastodon this a while back: https://jawns.club/@skyfaller/109943893866014242

Relatedly, what is the easiest bicycle to maintain in the long term, like if you wanted it to be a family heirloom? Bikes that are no longer in production are valid. What factors do you consider for ease of maintenance?

If you were building a bike from scratch with the goal of making it as easy to maintain as possible, how would you do it?

I keep messing up frozen croissants by forgetting to take them out to thaw/rise at the right time.

This time I messed them up by not putting them in the freezer quickly enough when I got home from the store. So they rose a teeny bit in the pkg, then got frozen again. I took them out at the right time this morning, but they are well behind in rising.

Gave up and put them in the solar oven just now anyway. They will be slightly flatter almond croissants.
