May 13: When does AI cross the line between helpful tool and problematic tech for writing and publishing?

I am an active luddite and do what I can to sabotage AI.

When does it cross the line?

  1. When steals training material.
  2. When it plagiarizes or mimics others.
  3. When they utilize immoral terms of service. i.e looting social media that have implemented "legalized theft."
  4. When it attempts to substitute itself for real individuals.
  5. When it attempts to pass itself off as human output.
  6. When it attempts to imply it is "intelligence."

In other words, everything that currently labels itself as AI. "Deep Learning" tools could be acceptable but not as they are currently implemented and run.

Oh forgot when it uses "sweatshop" labor.

@NaraMoore Actually, it's never the ML model that does all these things. We're not quite at that level of sophistication (or lack of ethics) yet. It's always humans who try to sell you something. Ok, sometimes it may produce lies, but nobody should expect you to believe them.

It's still some humans making the (bad) decisions.

A coworker of mine literally had a heart attack and his supervisor came into my office to somehow make the whole situation about herself and how she basically "saved the day" by calling 911. I'm just worried about the guy but I can't get an answer about him from her...

I still buy some physicl manga. I do perfer it, but have no room to store it and there is so much. I am mainly finishing series I started before I went to emanga. Photo of this summers physical purchases, include She is So Cheeky For a Commoner and the next volume of My Job is Yuri, as well as two volumes of Whisper me a Love Song.

@NaraMoore I hear you! Manga take up so much space, and it's really hard to get rid of them. There are some used bookstores that would buy manga, but they're usually not interested in Japanese-language ones.
I'd have switched to emanga completely if the market was more open. I'm really not interested in any proprietary reader apps and DRM. Also one of the reasons why I stopped buying from Amazon after the shit they pulled with Comixology.

@fujiwara Near you??? I'd be scared at that, the whole point of DDG is that it doesn't care where you are and doesn't transmit that information (be it derived from your IP address or whatever) to MSN when it queries for search results.

I finally came back after touching grass and there is a Linux vulnerability. Probably won’t affect us as the library as it appears to be on the cutting edge/latest release. The servers are on an older Debian release and my personal dedicated server runs Red Hat Enterprise Linux, which uses older versions.

It does show the vulnerability that open source software have. Without regular security audits and code reviews, something like slipping malicious code can slip in until someone eventually discovers it. That is why I’m not comfortable using the bleeding edge of Linux like Fedora or Ubuntu on a server environment. I prefer using something like RHEL or Debian (stable). Don’t need the absolute latest packages on a server.

@chikorita157 @NullNowhere The openssh backdoor, yes. But this goes as far back as xz 5.3.1 (from what I hear), and that version is/was also in stable distributions. You should keep your eyes peeled.

@chikorita157 Personally, I think parts pairing isn't bad per se, as it can prevent attaching risky parts to a privileged hardware security domain. What's absolutely unacceptable is the vendor abusing it to establish 100% dependency on their products and services, and preventing their customers from modifying their property in any way they see fit.
Basically - pairing, yes, but I want to do it myself at any time and without the need to ask the vendor for permission.

I love stumbling my way through using Docker to make a Plex/Sonarr/Transmission container. It's really fun when you have no idea what you are doing and every time you Google an error, every solution is "wow you don't know that? figure it out." The internet sure is lovely!

It is a disaster over there. The idols I know over there are looking for exit strategies. i.e. the real people want to leave. Which so far is IG or TikTok. Both the bloggers I follow have gone to Blue. (Oen says they left the Fedi due to harassment by a combination of anti-Asian prejudice and weebs unhappy to hear Japan isn't paradise. [Yes I tried to get them to come here))

Follows and likes are a joke. Most are ckick-bait bots.

@NaraMoore It's no big surprise though. Most (former) Xitter users I know are leaning heavily towards Bsky. Some of them tried the Fediverse but said they were too confused and gave up quickly.
