It's unavoidable that grad students will use LLM's to help them with their writing/proofreading and possibly even help jump start some of their reasoning. Rather than preaching total abstinence, this 3-page article outlines safer ways to use (and not use) these tools.

This week in endosymbiosis, an alga picks up an N-fixing bacterium that plays the role of a new "nitroplast" organelle. Some cool scaling relationships too.

I wonder if the number of US entomologists who still refer to the EntSoc meeting as "ESA" reflects a history of not caring about ecology by those financing the development of insecticides(?).

Um, starting to see a pattern where people are being followed by accounts whose avatar is an attractive young woman’s face and who post sweet little inspirational messages and cute puppy/cat pix. And they smell synthetic as hell. Saw ’em referred to in a mods conversation as “seeds”. There’s an agenda here, dunno what it is.

I really hate the term, "Digital Twin." It started out as a distinct idea with some marginal value (which companies like IBM milked to try to make some extra profit), but now it's lost any of its distinctive meaning and is just paint on a (simulated) lily.

tedpavlic,
@tedpavlic@mas.to avatar

@jaztrophysicist It's very trendy right now, for sure. But as more people try to exploit the interest in it by funders, they also stretch the definition of what a "digital twin" is to include whatever they were already doing. I guess that's the nice thing about ambiguously short names -- they trick funders into funding a broader portfolio of work than originally planned.

Looking for paper suggestions!

I'm teaching a class in Neuroecology for first year PhD students and part of it is a journal club.

I'm looking for additional, pure behavior papers that study "natural" / ecological behaviors, if possible not in mice.
And also for rather short papers that perform any form of brain recordings during natural /ecological behaviors (plus points if not in mice).

Any suggestions?

tedpavlic,
@tedpavlic@mas.to avatar

@Katja_Reinhard @elduvelle So would you consider two-photon microscopy of the antennal lobe in honeybees trained on floral odors? People like Brian Smith have shown how the antennal lobe rewires itself to be a better mixture discriminator, allowing for generalized learning of floral rewards despite significant variance in odor boquet within a single species of flower.

Every year the many names for mathematical statements cause my students a little anxiety. I want to make an Euler diagram to show how they all overlap and intersect— so please mention any words I could add to this list:

statement
proposition
theorem
axiom
postulate
rule
law
definition
formula
corollary
lemma
conjecture
hypothesis

Can you think of any others?

tedpavlic,
@tedpavlic@mas.to avatar

@futurebird In primary and secondary schools in the USA, the "critical thinking" crowd (i.e., conservative skeptics of science) have managed to get teachers to teach the CER framework:

claim
evidence
reasoning

You could consider adding a subset of these three. You might also consider "casual question" as well as "prediction" (partnering with hypothesis). Perhaps "predicate" too.
