At least the winds are westerly, even if they are 30-50kmh. A bit of fire around and I am on carer responsibility, so can't attend. We are ready to go.

With a long house of multiple buildings (hooray for rural builds over many years), mesh wifi just manages, and often enough, introduces weirdness and signal weakness in the ends.
For my partner, who works a busy job from home, connectivity can be fraught some days and she has to fall back to phone tethering. That's not a sustainable solution.
The attached image shows how our network is set up. It's increasingly apparent that running some network cable through parts of the house would be beneficial, but I fear it will be prohibitively expensive because of the weird construction.
Can any of my wifi/networking nerd friends here offer some advice? More mesh, or definitely look into cabling?
As I see it, cables would need to run from the office where the satellite connection comes in, to Building 3 where a wifi point/router could be connected, and into Building 2 upstairs where connectivity is not so important but where several smart lights and a couple of other devices are.

m8 you’ve had 40-odd years of the PC, 30 years of the internet being publicly available in Australia, and not much less than that since online banking and inter-account transfers have been around. If you’re unwilling to move away from a dinosaur like cheques and live in a fantasy where "We don't do any banking online because we're not familiar enough with computers. Computers don't figure largely in our lives,” you can’t be helped.

This is a bullshit story about a bullshit non-issue.

Look at this racist cooker bullshit against the Voice delivered to my mailbox. It shows exactly why there need to be truth in political communication laws.

It's worth noting that I live 25km from the nearest town and 9km up a back road from the nearest main road. And I have a giant Yes sign attached to my front fence.

The back of an unpleasant, racist, anti-Voice pamphlet delivered to mailboxes in the Bega Valley.

I've never been part of a "shoes off in the house" family, but living in the bush is accelerating my transition to being a shoes off in the house absolutist.

Also, the rain inevitably brings a tree fall. This is two large black wattles that I'll need to cut up once it dries out.

El Niño not very niñey this week.

Why the fuck is anyone listening to anything Pezzullo has to say? He's a corrupt former public servant with far too big an opinion of himself.

I am watching the first episode of so you don't have to. So far: the hard-arsed female cop stereotype, the high-on-his-own-masculinity cop stereotype, dick-swinging, jurisdictional shenanigans, an order to a junior officer to commit an obvious breach of The Privacy Act and the cybersecurity elements of The Criminal Code Act without an evidence-gathering warrant, and a conversation where two of the cast apparently casually walk from Wooloomooloo to Bondi in about 5 minutes.

It's dumb as fuck.

I absolutely love running a B&B. But sometimes I wonder how it is that people show little to no regard for the mantra of "leave it as you found it".

This from a recent departure:

  • definitely more than 1 meal of washing up left on the sink; most will need to be rewashed
  • the floor under the dining table covered with dirt and dropped food
  • trash left on the sink and floor
  • wet towels left chucked over the sofa
  • marks from unwashed dirty feet on more than one set of sheets
  • microwave left open
  • uncovered part-eaten food left in the fridge

We don't charge a cleaning fee as looking after the property is my full time job paid in pocket money - we're not making much money (about $40K gross/year). This makes it a lot less enjoyable.

When I contacted the guest after going to clear the cottage, their response was "I didn't look at my messages for your requests to put the trash out and leave the place tidy."

They did not get a good review and they won't get another booking (they came to visit nearby relatives).

shows a lot of promise for integration across manufacturers, but right now, there is still an awful lot of Fucking About™ required to make things happen.

I'm trying to integrate something and the bit that's required before I set the integration up requires SSH, an additional interface element (HACS), and an installation sequence, accompanied by clearing browser cache, that does not easily seem to work.

I'm as keen as the next geek to mess with stuff under the hood, but this is pretty much deep nerd only territory.

I don't remotely believe in that "thoughts and prayers" nonsense, but whatever vibes you can send into the universe as $partner goes into her breast cancer surgery would be appreciated.

Despite her medical team assuring us everything should be fine, and all the tests and exams she's had in the last 8 weeks indicating the same, it's been a bit of a ride (with more ride to come).

, I have a Pixel 7a phone with a cracked screen, but the local repairer doesn't fix Pixel devices. Is there someone reliable, quality, and trustworthy I can send it to for repair?

I could buy the kit from iFixit, but I don't presently have the time (or patience) to do the job (too much farm work, firewood cutting, and house reno work to do).

Suggestions appreciated.

@decryption should I put this on the forums?
