@evan qualified yes. Have a happy birthday if you're into that sort of thing!

I've been tasked with single-sourcing some docs that we should've single-sourced from the start (which I suggested at the time). 3 doc sets, built from 3 different branches of the same GitHub repo. Comparing branches on GH shows 148 & 300 files different between main branch and the other 2. At least some of those files are the same in all 3 branches, so I don't trust that compare tool.

It's nice at least that more people agree with me now, I guess?

I'll bitch and moan about this, but also genuinely enjoy doing the work.

Has been interesting reading some Qs/threads about what helped people get comfortable on the command line.

Someone I know accidentally rm rf’d their home directory once and hosed their machine, and had to spend basically the whole day setting everything up again. I was surprised to read that other folks in the thread have done this. Oof!

This is why I use a fancy prompt that gives me info about where I am and the current git state, and basically only do destructive things in git dirs.

trike,
@trike@cyberspace.rodeo avatar

@dachary I once accidentally rm -rf'd my / folder because I borked a loop in a shell script I was writing (the loop had a misplaced cd .. in it, iirc). Fortunately I was sitting next to a developer who quickly taught me to ctrl+c to stop the command, I didn't have permission to remove any important system stuff, and I had a backup I could restore just about everything from

I backed @pluralistic 's kickstarter for "The Internet Con: How to Seize the Means of Computation" today, and so can you! Or don't, I'm not the boss of you. I'm barely the boss of me some days.

Anyway, it's probably going to be great so maybe you'll want to take a look at it https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/doctorow/the-internet-con-how-to-seize-the-means-of-computation

Is it OK to tease someone about their big beard?

trike,
@trike@cyberspace.rodeo avatar

@evan I went with rarely. I think if you know the person with the big beard and understand that they'll take the teasing in good spirits, sure. But I don't think it's ok to tease the other big-bearded people, and they'll be in the majority.

Ok, I have spun up my own single-person Mastodon instance so I guess I’ll follow a migration guide and 🤞 I’ll see y’all on the other side?

(Masto.host makes hosting a Mastodon instance really easy, and is accepting signups again, so if you want to be in control of your own federation destiny, it’s not hard.)

trike,
@trike@cyberspace.rodeo avatar

@dachary I found the migration was pretty smooth when I did this a few months ago

Yes, published books will have some typos or other errors in them, but you never see the many, many more that never make it to print.

trike,

@RedPenRabbit @edibuddies I expect most people don't realise how easy it is to miss typos because our brains are good at interpreting things that are close to correct as if they actually were correct.

Should computing devices update their operating systems and installed apps while not in use?

trike,
@trike@cyberspace.rodeo avatar

@evan qualified yes for me. I want this to be an opt-in option for anything on my personal devices, and ideally there should be other conditions I can set (ex. I don't want my phone to download OS updates when I'm not connected to wifi).

For work devices, I think if IT is going to push updates it's definitely better if it's while I'm not doing any work

Just in case anyone thinks my work is all sunshine & rainbows: Name change of a fundamental service. Oof. I tried my best to decouple my doc process from this freaking thing, keeping variables & structure product-name-agnostic while retaining semantic meaning for usability. Probably could limp along, but if I don't fix this now, I know the name change will bite me in the future and annoy me constantly.

trike,
@trike@cyberspace.rodeo avatar

@dachary @rekiwi name changes can be really annoying! I've had a few to deal with recently too, and I hear that there are more coming. Variables definitely help, but when I grep OldName I inevitably find places where they weren't used.
