Mom's settlement cheque arrived. A whole $5.86 - after $2 processing fee 😏

"The website says the lawsuit occurred after the personal information, including health card numbers, of 8.6 million customers was stolen.

Payments are much smaller than what was originally promised on the settlement approval notice, which was compensation of $50 to $150."

@msquebanh Yeah, that's just how class action lawsuits work. There was one time where we were supposed to get free Sunkist canned tuna and wound up getting a free coupon for specific tuna products that we ended up not liking at all.

Hello, folks. I'm throwing this request out into the universe in the hopes that it can be responded to this week.

I picked up a freelancer/contract gig and I'm looking for an attorney who practices in British Columbia who can look over the contract for me. I'm willing to pay for up to one hour of someone's time to do this sometime during the next week or so. Are you the person I'm looking for? Boosts/reposts appreciated.

On the plus side, I did get to meet Sascha Christensen, former candidate for school board, who was pleased that I recognized him from the MTG Canadian Highlander community. I'd love to see more MTG folks need to get involved in local politics like that.

We did our best, and even though @devonblack did not win the nomination for the NDP candidacy for Saanich-Gulf Islands, we have learned a lot and will be ready for the challenges ahead.

trishalynn,
@trishalynn@mastodon.sandwich.net avatar

@msquebanh Sorry for not seeing your messages till now. I did not intentionally ignore you.

I don't work for the NDP, but I did volunteer for someone who was running for the NDP nomination for the Saanich-Gulf Islands federal riding. I decided to volunteer for her nomination campaign because we share a lot of the same ideals and because I think she's the kind of candidate who is looking to enact lasting social and political change.

If this disclosure means we can't be mutuals, I understand.

trishalynn,
@trishalynn@mastodon.sandwich.net avatar

@msquebanh I don't doubt that your reasons are very valid. There are definitely many things that I would prefer in a political party and there are also very many things that I wish the party in my native country (the U.S.) would change about itself. However, generally speaking, I'm a Minnesota Democrat with progressive leanings and there are not any parties (in the U.S., Canada, or elsewhere) that exactly encapsulate what I would prefer in a political system of government.

@msquebanh I'd heard about this while I was learning about how they do phone banking. Looking back on it, what do you think Anjali's campaign could have done differently to be more effective in challenging for leadership?

trishalynn,
@trishalynn@mastodon.sandwich.net avatar

@msquebanh So you think that there's nothing her campaign could have done because the parliamentary rules of meetings and how the elections process within political campaigns are run is also flawed?

If I had more funds, I'd get my blood work done at home to avoid going into the clinic. I have increased anxiety every time there's another appointment there. I'm usually the only one masked when I go. The clinic I am sent to is in a medical building's basement. Air ventilation is poor & hasn't been updated for years. I feel safer at my dentist's office than at blood clinic, xray clinic & any local hospitals.

Really wish govt invested in air quality mandates & brought back mask mandates too.

trishalynn,
@trishalynn@mastodon.sandwich.net avatar

@msquebanh Is there not a better Life Labs where you are? Not that the ones I go to have more masked people in them, but they're not in basements.

trishalynn,
@trishalynn@mastodon.sandwich.net avatar

@msquebanh I'm so sorry that access isn't great for you out there. And yeah, I'm also not happy that very few people mask these days, especially while waiting for bloodwork. When I went to see my nephrologist last week, I told them that I was glad they had theirs up still, and they mentioned that it's mostly for their immunocompromised patients.

I read that the idea of https://indieweb.org is to post on your personal site first then broadcast to everywhere else… but I want the reverse: post in communities where it makes sense (hobbies/circles) then aggregate everything on my site.

trishalynn,
@trishalynn@mastodon.sandwich.net avatar

@ayo I think I understand the sentiment, but I'm not convinced yet. I do a form of "post on your own place, then broadcast to others". I also just read the Indie Web site Code of Conduct, and it does sound neat.

Is the purpose of the Indie Web system that it allows people to read and interact with your stuff via the platform they prefer without you having to have accounts on all those other platforms? What am I missing?

Discord just announced a change to their Terms of Service, which restarts the clock on when you can opt out of binding arbitration. All you gotta do is read the "Opt-out" paragraph of Section 16 & send an email to arbitration-opt-out@discord.com from the email address you use to log in which states something as simple as this:

I am confirming that as of the date of this email, I am choosing to opt out of binding arbitration to settle disputes with Discord.

Boosts pls.

@sciencebase Yes, I should have mentioned it but there weren't enough chars left. At the same time, though, it's almost never a bad idea to read a ToS when it is changed.

Are there any or or doing any current studies on human & retention - specifically on maximum capacities of human brain memory storage & if there's a limit to how much we can store in our brains?

Like, if we build up many new memories, do we reach a point where some past memories are removed from our memory storage or is there no maximum limits to human memory storage?

These are things I wonder about & don't know enough about.

⚠️ Here's your federally mandated regular reminder to include more black and indigenous women in your social feeds* ⚠️

trishalynn,
@trishalynn@mastodon.sandwich.net avatar

@dragfyre In a vaccuum, that sounds like a very dangerous statement. Like, I don't think any Black or Indigenous women want random strangers to be following them wherever they go. :/

Here's one for the crowd. Eventually, I want to write an -related paper, or at least an article, about @xyzzy. I'll need to learn from and cite examples of user interaction. What ethical principles should I follow in approaching this? Here's what I'm thinking but need your feedback:

▫️ Treat all analyzed data confidentially - no PII, even if the post was "public"
▫️ Is it OK to screenshot posts if PII is removed? What about quoting? Assuming permission should be sought.

trishalynn,
@trishalynn@mastodon.sandwich.net avatar

@dragfyre My initial thoughts are that you should add a link to a recruitment/informed consent letter in the profile for the bot. The letter needs to be written out in full and probably in the format prescribed by human research ethics boards where you live.

LMK if you want a copy of the informed consent letter I wrote for my Master's capstone research project. You can also look up papers in the field to check out how their recruitment and informed consent letters have been written.

trishalynn,
@trishalynn@mastodon.sandwich.net avatar

@dragfyre Yep, that is totally the procedure. Folks need to know what they're getting into before you use their reactions and information as data. I'd also recommend seeing if there's a human research ethics course in the jurisdiction where you live, to know more about why and how to conduct ethical research.

I am both intrigued and frustrated by today's reading recommendation by Dr. Susanne Thiessen via the IPAC newsletter. As a newcomer to Canada and also to the / discipline, I'd like to know more about specific instances where people have worked "in a good way" with Indigenous (First Nations, Metis, and/or Inuit) communities and compare them to times where they have not and what people can do to repair those relationships.

Wow, I'm really not having a good day today, am I? The belated reading recommendation today comes from Native News Online Kaili Berg's piece about the first-ever U.S.-produced Indigenous Fashion Week which will happen in May 2024 in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

https://nativenewsonline.net/arts-entertainment/the-southwestern-association-for-indian-arts-announces-designer-line-up-for-indigenous-fashion-week

I am hopeful that with more Indigenous fashion designers getting more recognition and publicity in the world of high fashion, Indigenous designs from non-Indigenous designers will be come less of a "thing".

Meta is downranking/hiding political content on Threads. The company says Threads will “not recommend any content/accounts that post about politics.”

Here’s the issue: what counts as “politics” is often any news abt people who have had their whole existence politicized, such as news about Black people, LGBTQ people, disabled ppl, women, etc. Climate scientists, public health experts etc also considered “political” https://www.axios.com/2024/02/09/meta-political-content-moderation-threads

trishalynn,
@trishalynn@mastodon.sandwich.net avatar

@Marks @taylorlorenz Oh dear. As a former U.S. head election judge in MN, we had lots of concerns about things like that. I can't remember what the best practice advice was, though.
