Did you know that it's actually NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope? Even though it is often referred to as "NASA" only.

European Space Agency has contributed the NIRSpec instrument, half of the MIRI instrument, and the launch (including the payload adapter & launch site services) and has 15 scientists working at the science and operations center. , the Canadian Space Agency, has contributed the NIRISS instrument.

@Jourei no, JWST is actually lead by NASA. But it's not only NASA. Lot's of examples where it is referred to as a NASA telescope only, see e.g. https://www.theguardian.com/science/2023/nov/15/planet-where-it-rains-sand-revealed-by-nasa-telescope-wasp-107b

Hubble is a NASA/ESA telescope, too. Not only NASA :)

vicgrinberg,
@vicgrinberg@mastodon.social avatar

@Winwaed @Jourei the solar arrays were done in UK on an ESA contract - more here https://www.esa.int/Enabling_Support/Space_Engineering_Technology/How_Hubble_got_its_wings

(As a background: ESA generally does give contracts out to companies in member state countries, so ESA made mostly means made by member states 😊)

vicgrinberg,
@vicgrinberg@mastodon.social avatar

@schnedan yeah, it is something we struggle with and are working on. It does help that NASA has a much larger budget and is one agency for one country while ESA serves all its 22 member states with their different wishes & languages + the associated ones.

New glasses!

@dmbaturin alas, they do not allow me to observe in X-rays 😉

Any organization to donate [edit: that is give to a place that has use for them] old glasses to in the Netherlands that is either close to Leiden or accepts a parcel?

I have two old pair of glasses that are in good condition, but both my style and my eyesight changed too much for me to ever use them again. I tried googling - in Dutch! - but mainly find Belgium (I could also bring them to Pearle in Belgium, but it would be easier to do so in NL) :(

Boosts welcome.

vicgrinberg,
@vicgrinberg@mastodon.social avatar

@pbloem but are they going to do something useful with them? I'm searching for a place that can actually use old glasses in a good condition. Edited now the original post to clarify.

vicgrinberg,
@vicgrinberg@mastodon.social avatar

@pbloem the problem with kringloopwinkel is that there are no opticians working there, so nobody who can find the right person for my glasses. Would be different if those were standard reading glasses, but I'm actually short sighted not far sighted and with slightly different prescription for both eyes. (I do bring lots fo stuff to the local kringloopwinkel and weggeefwinkel...)
And yes, I found that one and can't tell whether they are active indeed :(

vicgrinberg,
@vicgrinberg@mastodon.social avatar

@gpk my prescriptions are simple 😊

Astronomers who build instruments and publish in #SPIE journals - please post the preprints on #arXiv as well! #astrodon #astroinstrumentation

@mattkenworthy omg, this! Finding someone with SPIE access is always such a pain! (And also there is a high chance I'll never find out about your paper if it's not on arxiv...)

Made one of my favorite recipes for an old friend/colleague (we've known each other for 15 years - how did that happen!) visiting..

(If you want to try: https://thehappyfoodie.co.uk/recipes/chermoula-aubergine-with-bulgar-and-yoghurt/ you can easily double or triple the aubergines; try smaller aubergines if you triple the amount of them as done here.)

Another thing I am missing on #mastodon is the ability to add notes to blocks.

For some, it's obvious. For others, I'd really like to be reminded why I blocked.

[edit to add: I mean notes added during the blocking process, without having to go to the account and add a note there.]

vicgrinberg,
@vicgrinberg@mastodon.social avatar

@DrVeronikaCH I should have been more clear, I'd prefer to have the notes added during the block process (without having to go to the account) and for them to appear when I extract my block list.

My nice neighbors are moving to a bigger place and my landlord does definitely not want to sell our house - which is a bummer, because I/we would loved to buy it (at some point in future). Overall a lot of news that make me feel really shitty today :\

vicgrinberg,
@vicgrinberg@mastodon.social avatar

@grb090423 I don't blame my landlords really - they had bought the house for themselves but moved when they got more kinds & the chance to work from home for which this place is definitely too small. Plus they've been super nice landlords overall. But still, I would have loved this place, too. And lost other things on the market are either too large or too old.

I think I am in the market for a new hiking rain jacket. After a very intensive 16 months my current 90 euro MH500 rain jacket from Quechua/Decathlon is reaching it’s end of life, even with proper maintenance during it’s life span. But I’m wondering if a rain jacket from a well known brand that is more expensive might also be even better? I think The North Face is largely overrated, but maybe Patagonia or something like that? What are your experiences with rain jackets?

vicgrinberg,
@vicgrinberg@mastodon.social avatar

@smveerman my partner has good experience with Vaude (note: they are local to us, so we are possibly a bit biased; but I generally like the brand). His two are holding for ages, intensive use.

My experience so far has been mixed - bought a 3-in-1 one but it was leaking from the beginning one a shoulder seam. On the other hand they inspected it and took it back without complaints even though it was a sale item.

@vicgrinberg@mastodon.social avatar

I wish mastodon's automatic deletion had a "keep bookmarked posts and all posts in the same thread as them" and not just "keep bookmarked posts".

I bookmarked some old astro outreach posts so they don't disappear (astro does not expire!), but they often also contain some (very good!) questions from folks and I never bookmarked answers (lots of work + that introduced chaos into my bookmarks, esp if people comments get deleted) and now it looks like I've never answered them 😞

vicgrinberg,
@vicgrinberg@mastodon.social avatar

@venite yay for being excited!

But also - please only do this as long as it's fun. I did not expect someone to solve this for me, was just airing a bit of annoyance I had recently with an old thread of mine re-surfacing in my notifications.

vicgrinberg,
@vicgrinberg@mastodon.social avatar

@chris yeah, that!

And there are certainly reasons why this isn't implemented - I don't know activity pub so can't tell what is expensive and what isn't.

But yes about leaving stubs - I guess this is another one that is hard to do since the comments may be hosted on different instances. But this is just a speculation ...
