Turns out Rabbit 1 is just an app running on Android.

Makes me think of Juicero – a $400 machine that squeezed readymade juice out of a pouch.

I see more and more AI-generated images posted with claims that they’re real. Not fake news, but “look at this awesome craft” or “what a great photo.”

Most comments are along the lines “Wow, such talent.”

I don’t know where this is headed but it feels dark and race-to-the-bottom:y.

Been slacking on my weekly reading updates.

amreading ’ Katie stells an engaging story about politics. Certainly doesn't make me look at DC any more fondly than I already didn’t.

I've been slowing working through the Saga of Seven Suns. It's a fun (But DENSE) series.

@jwilker @bookstodon I’m reading “Girig-Sverige: Så blev folkhemmet ett paradis för de superrika” by Andreas Cervenka. Freely translated “Greedy Sweden: How a middle class haven became a paradise for the super rich.”

It's about how the Swedish tax system was changed. Almost no tax on capital gains & properties while salary/wage tax is among the highest in the world. Sweden now has four times as many dollar billionaires per capita as the US. But a tax bracket of 52% is reached at $59k/yr salary.

Swedish startup Northvolt, Europe’s best-funded battery manufacturer, has secured approval from the European Commission for €902m in state aid from Germany to build a production plant in Heide, a German town near the Danish border.Production is expected to start in 2026 and produce 60 GWh of battery capacity each year, enough to power 600k electric vehicles

Research reminder: Getting infected with covid is bad news for future health. Getting re-infected is really bad news. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41591-022-02051-3

@dangillmor Interesting study, but I think it’s good to mention that it was published in 2022. The authors have a more recent paper out studying the effects after two years based on the same cohorts.

The Gemini video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UIZAiXYceBI) was indeed deceptive and very heavily edited.

"the voice in the demo was reading out human-made prompts they’d made to Gemini & showing them still images. That’s quite different from what Google seemed to be suggesting: that a person could have a smooth voice conversation with Gemini as it watched and responded in real time to the world around it”

Nevertheless, Gemini appears to be better than GPT-4 at reasoning tasks https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2023-12-07/google-s-gemini-ai-model-looks-remarkable-but-it-s-still-behind-openai-s-gpt-4

wilander,
@wilander@mastodon.social avatar

@fj My understanding is that the version that’s better than ChatGPT 4 is Gemini Ultra which has not been released and has no release date. That’s another thing people have been deceived by apparently. I fell for both.

Interesting paper from the ECB on who bears the cost of inflation the most from the 2021-2022 shock.

“country-level average welfare costs –expressed as a share of 2021–22 income– were larger than a typical recession, and heterogeneous, e.g., 3% in France and 8% in Italy;"

"this inflation episode resembles an age-dependent tax, with the elderly losing up to 20%, and roughly half of the 25–44 year-old winning”

@fj A different data point, from Sweden: Retirees were better off because pensions are automatically indexed up for inflation whereas Swedish workers saw pay increases way below inflation.

@RIDDLES Sorry, but this is a rumor that spread in 2021. Stairs are built that way to allow them to be steeper and thus save space. See: https://www.reuters.com/article/factcheck-witches-stairs-idUSL1N2L71QA Cc @glennf

I’m behind on my posts. 🙂 Late August I finished reading the short story collection “I, Robot” by Isaac Asimov. They were originally published 1940-1950 and it’s stunning how Asimov could predict so much of our future.

A week ago, I finished reading “The Trident Deception” by Rick Campbell. Often referred to as a modern-day Hunt for Red October, it’s a chilling story of what can happen to nuclear weapon control systems.

This evening I finished reading “The Three-Body Problem” by Cixin Liu. It’s science fiction on an epic scale mixed with the Chinese Cultural Revolution and computer gaming. The English translation has occasional footnotes explaining Chinese references and context which I loved.
