Democracy is the political expression of mob rule, in which the majority group can impose its will with impunity on minority groups.

Progressives - the people whose ideology is based on lifting up minorities above all others - are coincidentally also the ones who shout the loudest about "preserving our democracy". The cognitive dissonance from this is only possible to reconcile if you either lack the ability to think about it rationally, or you have no integrity to get in the way of your double-standard.

@ryan @threalist

democracy as a Venn diagram is a circle that fully encapsulates republic. direct democracy is another circle fully within democracy but with no overlap with republic. there's also federalism etc which I guess could overlap with direct democracy. we are where republic and federalism and democracy all overlap. going on and on about how we're not a democracy makes me think you don't want lots of people to have a say in government. which from the comments above, I guess you don't.

"The only way Democracy works is if you disenfranchise anyone without a vested interest in the long term and set minimum standards around wisdom.

It should be a narrow body of eligible voters."

where I think we get into trouble is thinking any of this implies somebody is in the wrong body. it's the cultural expectations that are wrong. we should understand that being in the wrong body is a thing, but it's very rare. while the feelings above are basically universal at some point in our lives. and not making space for that sucks. sex differences exist and there are tendencies, but I'm not sure the cultural construct of gender should.

Is Biden or Trump More Responsible for Ending Roe?

wjmaggos, (edited )
@wjmaggos@liberal.city avatar

This both blows my mind and gives me hope that much of our disagreement is based purely on being uninformed. Not even misinformation. AFAIK there isn't a conservative effort to make people think Biden did anything to end Roe or wanted to. They mostly want people to know Trump and the Republicans orchestrated the changes to SCOTUS that led to this change. And these are registered voters. Civics, caring about being informed and maybe journalism are the problem.

I guess but with Biden being around forever, aren't any failures balanced by his victories getting other justices approved?

Better yet, you know whose words you don't need to trust, because you aren't obligated to use any particular server? And the software is open source? And regularly audited by security researchers?

It's not perfect, but no tool is. It's a matter of what trade offs you're willing to accept. Just sayin' ¯_(ツ)_/¯

What obligation do #platformcoops have to operate at the same scale as or even outperform their venture capital funded corporate counterparts? If a #platformcoop does not succeed in having a similar reach as major corporations with comparable features, should it be considered "low quality" or are there other standards of success worth considering?

#Cooperatives #Cooperative #Coops #Coop

wjmaggos,
@wjmaggos@liberal.city avatar

@mirlo

the trick is people value simplicity. platform coops promise to be that one place for that type of thing that the dominant corporation provides, but without the evil. if they don't achieve ubiquity, the value to us is severely limited.

if I want to download , I look for the musician on Bandcamp. if I want to give a podcaster or writer ongoing support, I hope they use Patreon. I don't want to manage multiple accounts either. my dream is decentralized solutions for both.

wjmaggos,
@wjmaggos@liberal.city avatar

@mirlo

"need to do so" in order to do what? I hope they can be a sustainable business no matter what but from an outsider perspective, I want them to win to help fix the economy for average people. to give less power to the very wealthy. to make our lives in the market feel more human. they have to be big to do much of that I fear.

wjmaggos,
@wjmaggos@liberal.city avatar

@axwax @mirlo

every band (or maybe label) having their own site that is also part of a decentralized network that lets the listener use something like Spotify to listen to any music and give them money at the end of the month based on percentage listened to during that time is what I dream of.

I think we can beat the big guys when we build systems that work better cause they don't care about the corporation and cheaper by squeezing out the profit for billionaires.

#Funkwhale does the streaming but they are designed around users hosting their own music, much more so than musicians. it's just very confusing design imo.

the payments need to be addressed by something like a new open protocol ala the @w3c.

@mike @molly0xfff

a decentralized Patreon is essential. an open protocol/API that would let us transfer money bank to bank almost as easily as sending an email.

the paywall issue is a real problem but could be overcome if we could connect our media/reading apps to this. set any amount that gets automatically distributed on a percentage basis by time spent.

if enough people do this with enough money, we eventually convince more and more creators to release their work directly and open access.

wjmaggos,
@wjmaggos@liberal.city avatar

@samsethi @mike @molly0xfff

absolutely the right idea but I think it has to be a pot we set monthly that gets automatically distributed and there's too many problems with crypto for most people.

wjmaggos,
@wjmaggos@liberal.city avatar

@Hyolobrika @mike @molly0xfff @samsethi

simplicity matters.

wjmaggos,
@wjmaggos@liberal.city avatar

@samsethi @Hyolobrika

the magic of decentralized social media is content coming in from anywhere. but today, you might hit a paywall or have to wade through a ton of ads. so people often stay in information silos. we can fix that.

Because a blocked account cannot see posts by the user that blocked them, they are also not able to reply. So one user can reply to another and then block them, making it look to everyone else like the blocked account had no comeback etc. That it was such a good response, the blocked gave up and walked away. When they were actually not given a chance. Consider that when you're reading conversations here.

NOTE: you can reply to your own comment to say they did this.

It's been annoying listening to podcasters that often question media and reality make assertions that the aurora photos were fakes. Gell-Man Amnesia now makes me question them more.

While the phenomenon itself may not be completely natural (HAARP?) the manner in which it was captured is not mysterious to this photographer who has taken many a long exposure and particularly with astrophotography.

Longer exposures = more saturated colors and tones than seen by the naked eye.

wjmaggos,
@wjmaggos@liberal.city avatar

@melodiousowls @fletcher

people are often shocked when somebody reports on something they know a lot about, jumping to the conclusion that they are specifically full of shit. experience that phenomenon enough and you realize that journalism is a real job and that pundits whose entire shtick is in mocking them, is a grift. calling it all a conspiracy is next level desperation. they both have their place but most of the time it's basic mistakes by good people and competing worldviews/interests.

of course you respond to a quote that so encapsulates what these podcasts have done to you, telling you there's no good media out there, by saying stop paying attention to the media. yet your OP that I am responding to is not about you visiting with neighbors or smelling the flowers, but listening to podcasts. it's like Adam using social media to announce the start of his podcast where he tells people social media is horrible.
