So, with all the unfortunate news about #Mozilla redirecting folks from #Firefox to focus on #AI, amidst layoffs as well, I'd like to point out that @Vivaldi is not integrating AI in the foreseeable future: https://vivaldi.com/blog/technology/vivaldi-wont-allow-a-machine-to-lie-to-you/

And, I say this as someone who used and swore by Firefox since it was known as Phoenix. Over the past year, I've gotten to know Vivaldi, and it's now my daily driver.

yoasif,
@yoasif@mastodon.social avatar

@macmanx @zef @timelordiroh @Vivaldi Oh, it got boosted by Vivaldi even though you are spreading misinformation about their browser (it doesn't lack AI)?

I'm honestly surprised by that.

@jon is that something you stand by?

How is the article https://vivaldi.com/blog/technology/vivaldi-wont-allow-a-machine-to-lie-to-you/ coherent with https://vivaldi.com/features/translate/ ?

Are we really to believe that translation engines (including the AI based one that Vivaldi bundles) do not lie?

That doesn't pass the sniff test.

@Vivaldi Look at https://lingvanex.com

They tell me they use AI, I see your logo on the page - should I think differently?

kurtseifried, to firefox

Ok so I'm trying . Setup 2 profiles and am logged in on my main personal and main work account. Switching between them is... ugly (go to the task bar and pick one, or enter "about:profiles" and pick one).

Also the 1password extension isn't behaving correctly (e.g. setting up a Firefox account for sync and I can't use 1Password to set the password?).

It's 2023. Firefox is probably fine if you use one account, but for multiple accounts, meh. And the fact that it's having issues with 1password plugin is a bit of a deal breaker sadly.

yoasif,
@yoasif@mastodon.social avatar

@kurtseifried I generally tell people to install Firefox Developer edition for one of their profiles, to give them separate taskbar entries: https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/developer/

danielsiepmann, (edited ) to rant German

Sorry, but I need to about this situation.

I'm a backend developer but couldn't find a developer to help me out. So I tried to get into on my own.
I head over to Mozilla Developer Network and everything looked so simple. I tried to convert my web app into a PWA and debugged via Firefox. But didn't get any issues, except it didn't work. I tried to find more help. MDN links to Microsoft and GitHub for concrete, way to complex, examples.
I turn on chromium to use lighthouse to get a proper report. That helps and I could fix some issues. Which accordingly to MDN would not be necessary.. But it now yells at me without concrete issues, and without concrete to dos.

Is this the modern internet? I learned the internet as a way where everyone with some free and open sources could put things on.

But it now feels like you need first to buy some knowledge from some closed source companies like Microsoft using closed source software in order to finally achieve something.

BTW: This project is not to make money, it is to help preserve memory of holocaust in Germany at a location where there is no mobile network. Therefore the project needs to work was PWA. buchenwaldbahn.de

Maybe someone can jump in a point me to a very minimal example that is working? Or other helpful sources or has some hints how to debug? Current status: I can't install the PWA. You can find current proof of concept here: tmp.daniel-siepmann.de/project…

Lighthouse tells me it is installable. But Firefox doesn't allow me to install the PWA. How can I debug installation of PWA for or find a linter, or something? And Chromium won't execute my service worker.

yoasif,
@yoasif@mastodon.social avatar

@danielsiepmann Firefox desktop doesn't support PWA installation, so I hope you aren't trying there.

It was only a few short months ago when I saw @mattblaze post about working the election to understand better.

No great, deep takeaways so far, except to note that as you might expect, no one is interested in how people are voting, and workers are far more concerned about efficiency -- getting people in and out, voted as quickly as possible.

Yeah, browsers can too take some time to launch for the first time after not being used for quite some time, but not 9 MINUTES, maximum a minute-two

chrisarter, to firefox

What browser are you using?

I love FireFox, but more and more frequently things just simply don't work and nobody seems to care (understandable, it's a tiny market share).

So I end up having to switch to Chrome or Safari to complete some task.

As a user I don't want to see the web monopolized to just two choices. Diversity is good, albeit a pain in the ass as a dev myself.

Most alternatives are just Chromium under the hood 😧

    Does support using an Android phone as an security key like ? And Windows Hello?

    Increasingly want to switch to FF but those security features are very handy. I've always thought MFA should be a push notif not a damn number and at least a FEW sites I can use MFA with this way.

    I tried googling but I'm not really sure what the feature is called, this is the menu for it

    yoasif,
    @yoasif@mastodon.social avatar

    @SirTapTap The Android device as security device is passkey support, which is not yet present in Firefox. Watch https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1792433 for updates to that.

    Not sure what supporting Windows Hello would mean for Firefox 😅 .

    yoasif,
    @yoasif@mastodon.social avatar

    @SirTapTap I don't know if I have any machines available to test, but this feature is at least optionally available by opting into it: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1626778

    Not sure it works with all Windows Hello authentication methods, but it is worth a try.

    Preface: I don't mean this as a slight and I use Firefox every day.

    When I look at Mozilla's actions from the outside, I don't understand what they are doing to try to dig themselves out of the market share and Google paycheck hole they are dug in. I don't see the strategy. I don't see them heading a direction that I think as long-term hope for being independent. There's gotta be something I'm missing.

    yoasif,
    @yoasif@mastodon.social avatar

    @Joseph_of_Earth @slowbyrne The Vivaldi stuff sounds like window dressing -- Mozilla develops Gecko.

    I think Brave Search is a nice idea, and who knows, maybe it works for them. I remember when Mozilla partnered with the company that it used to be (Cliqz) and people went ballistic.

    realsimon, to firefox German
    @realsimon@mastodon.green avatar

    I asked a few friends and apparently what keeps people from switching to is not missing functions or speed. It's the nuisance of making an account first.

    If you already have a google account (and almost everybody does), you don't wanna make another one for another browser because of laziness.

    So if it were possible to somehow port your google account to firefox in one click, that might do wonders for the firefox market share.

    yoasif,
    @yoasif@mastodon.social avatar
