Silicon Valley native, tech, artist, wonk, raconteur. I'll veer from topic to topic, and change stylistically on a whim. Curious about stuff and things.

UCD alum (PoliSci/IR & Tech Policy). Strong interests in the arts, actual political science, cliodynamics, systems theory, and seeking a bit of adventure at even the smallest scale.

I own more albums than you have had changes of underpants since birth.

    @pixelfed probably one of the easiest ways (along with content moderation clarity) that will help jumpstart a real exodus from IG to Pixelfed.

    @cloudguy i always liked that album. The bass parts on that record are actually quite well constructed, and the drums from tunes like "is it love" are actually fairly badass. They're fourth album "pull" which got released two decades after it was actually recorded, also has some really choice nuggets in it, and has guitar work from Buzz Feiten and Trevor Rabin.

    zeruch,
    @zeruch@mastodon.social avatar

    @cloudguy the sound was definitely thin in spots, but that definitely was the production preference mid-80s (the producer also engineered Yes' "big generator"), when you had too much drum gating and click tracks. That said, the band could still perform the stuff legitimately well live https://youtu.be/jtTKSKDIXtg , and I am not surprised that Mastellotto and Ferris became big session guys (and it mased a lot of his case eventually in the King Crimson constellation).

    @cloudguy jakko is resoundingly underappreciated by old guard krim fanboys, who seem to have a problem with his more melodic approach...but they're wrong.

    @zeruch@mastodon.social avatar

    @cloudguy his solo records (if you havent checked them out) are really worth investigating, especially IMHO "The Bruised Romantic Glee Club" and his EP with 3/4ths of Japan. He always struck me as the UKs version of Kevin Gilbert.

    Fifteen years ago tomorrow I published the first post on the fediverse.

    https://web.archive.org/web/20080618164355/http://identi.ca/notice/1

    It's still visible on Identi.ca today, although the URL format changed a few years ago, and the redirect plugin stopped working a few years after that. 🫤

    https://identi.ca/evan/note/Y0QwGyc1QYilqqawkDrQlg

    Thanks to everyone who made identi.ca a great place to be, and thanks to everyone who's expanded the fediverse since then.

    Someday soon-ish I'd like to have identi.ca working with ActivityPub. When I get the time for it!

    @evan I really enjoyed identi.ca way back when. I actually thought the ux was considerably better.

    @andrew @renchap do you think it can be avoided at any smaller size? At some point once the broad technology becomes generally accepted as a spam vector, (and we'll just think of Mastodon as one thing for the moment), every nook and cranny can be attacked the same way. Think of usenet in that regard... Once the endless September began no group was safe from turd blooms of noise. De federating wouldn't be the best solve in that case...

    Strong, well-researched, scary piece on Long Covid, which is no freaking joke; one of my loved ones is struggling with what I suppose is a relatively mild case and this creates quality-of-life problems you don’t want to have.

    @timbray this is honestly one of the things that terrifies me the most about it.

    @Cloudguy I've formally decided that Edinburgh is notably superior to London. As a yank saying this, you all need to review yourselves...

    zeruch,
    @zeruch@mastodon.social avatar

    @Cloudguy had it already (I've also tried a few others, and I'm not shocked that all are quite serviceable) It's not bad, but my favorite beer of all time is a different Scot product, Ola Dubh, from Harviestoun, which graciously is about half to a third of the cost I would pay in the States.

    I've managed to keep myself from bankruptcy at the whiskey shops, but it's daunting.
