@themadcodger I love the UI of calckey but as far as I understand it, it's just a twitter replacement and the UI isn't built for subs / communities or a reddit style experience?
@Joeyfingis please be mindful that federation from this kbin instance to other platforms might be restricted at the moment as ernest (creator of kbin) works on stabilising the instance due to high user migration from Reddit. Once things stabilise, federation should work better and you should be able to see your account in other platforms
I ask that people modmail subreddits that have privated in protest (you can see which ones here: https://reddark.untone.uk/) and ask they put a message about kbin migration into their about section so users trying to see those subs will come here and start communities. It will help grow kbin as well as contribute to the protest....
@SFaulken I'm not sure if one has been produced, but a well thought out info graphic / video might do wonders to help explain the fediverse and the goal of kbin, mastadon etc.
A lot of people think they are moving from monolith to monolith and when they hear that it's split up, with the potential to have the same reddit style subs across different servers, FOMO and analysis paralysis kicks in. Too much choice for some. Personally I prefer this over a monolith and I think it promotes better communities, but your average user, I believe, not so much.

@themadcodger and the great thing is if a corner of the fediverse becomes too toxic, you can move to another instance and create a new less toxic community. This is where I love the concept of the fediverse, no walled garden
@hoges25 there are some differences between the two. I believe Lemmy only does link aggregation (so a direct Reddit replacement) where Kbin does this as well as microblogging (so think tweets / toots). Kbin allows you to see mastadon toots and respond to them and mastadon can do the same. Kbin and Mastadon can both access lemmy too. That's the beauty of ActivityPub which is the protocol that allows federation between the services.
When you join an instance / server and create your username, you may find that your server doesn't have a community you are looking for. So for example, say gaming. You might hear about another instance having a gaming community that you want to be a part of. All you need to do is search for that community on your instance / server and then the instance / server will start pulling in that data for you and other users on the server.
I think it would be hard to create a UI that serves all the functionality of the federated internet. You don't have a single place / application where you can read a reddit post, create a tweet, post to facebook and upload a video to youtube. Think the same with regards to these federated services. Mastadon is for tooting (if that's your things), kbin for reddit like activites, pixelfed for instagram activities, peertube for youtube related activities etc. But if you are interested in following someone from mastadon and getting updates, well that's where ActivityPub shines. Getting the content federated and shared is fantastic and really brings together the ethos of an open internet that isn't controlled by one company.

You are making sense, just remember your login does not travel between kbin and lemmy. When you are on kbin, you can search for communities on the server you joined or across the fediverse. The way to do that is community@instance.name
For example, say if I found out the beehaw.org server had an awesome gaming community, well I can just type gaming@beehaw.org into the search box and then subscribe to it. It will then federated into the server (the server will start pulling in new posts - but not old posts) that means others can now see it too. That's why if you see the message that it's not fully federated and you might see more on the original instance.
Your login is just a place to reside but with the fediverse, you can pull in content to view. Which helps as you don't need multiple log ins for multiple services. I've seen a few people ask about people with the same username as theirs on other instances and that will happen but remember that your username is like email. You have username@instance.name, so whilst someone might share the same username, they'll never be on the same instance. That's how you tell others apart.
@speck you can copy a link to the post in the search bar, this will then make the instance start to federate with the instance hosting the content. So you can do fediverse@kbin.social or you can do https://kbin.social/m/fediverse if the @ method doesn't work
Facinating to watch a potential #RedditMigration to the fediverse. The #Lemmy and #Kbin teams are dealing with all the same issues that Mastodon and other fedi microbloging sites did - but in even a faster timeframe as much of Reddit appears to be set to go dark on Monday. Questions of how to onboard, questions of centralized vs distributed onboarding, questions of how to explain servers and federation, and deep questions of how to scale if traffic is anyting like it could be Monday...
@tchambers - just deleted my whole reddit history and account. As someone mentioned before, it's just become a bit of cesspool with some good content. but most posts are for karma farming, with a race to provide the funniest one liner. Kbin seems more refreshing and more engaging. Hopefully it stays that way but the beauty is that you can spin up instances or find other communities if one becomes bogged down in nonsense

Glad to see kbin taking off. I prefer it over lemmy and the magazine concept has helped me explain it to others. I tell people kbin is like a shop. Anyone can set up their own shop. Then people can create magazines, and in those magazines, posts are like articles and you can comment on those articles. But this shop can also see the magazines in other shops etc. Its a bit arbitrary but it's actually helped people understand the fediverse in terms they understand
From what I've read online of those who have tried it at WWDC, they mention that it's actually very impressive. The resolution is like looking through a pair of glasses, the AR experiences demonstrated were unbelievable and overall the headset was a joy to use. Although every reviewer mentioned the price was way too high.
What interested me from the announcement was Disney showing off the stats when watching sports and the 3D court / field for instant replays. If they actually bring that fruition, then that would be something unique.
I'm an android user though and not a fan of apple, but if it spurs on competition and starts bringing AR further into the mainstream, we may see more of this tech becoming cheaper. I definitely prefer movie watching in a silo environment (currently use the nReal glasses for this) but watching sports too with stats etc and some incredible AR, as well as office working would definitely get me interested. If the price was right.
Another thing to note is how comfortable it is to wear. I have a quest 2 but I can't watch a full movie on it as my face gets sweaty and the device gets heavy. With the vision pro being slimmer, it might offset some of the downward force at the front and be enjoyable to wear. Although that is yet to be seen and reviews will hopefully report truthfully on that. I like watching movies on my nReal Airs as they are very lightweight and this is where the true adoption of the tech will take off.
When they can fit the features of the vision pro into a glasses like model, then you'll see it take off at warp speed. But we've a long way to go before reaching that form factor.
If its wearable all day, with next to no strain, and the features advertised turn out to be real and work incredibly well, it might be worth it even at a slightly lower price point. I would pay for a premium model and move ecosystems if those points were met, but the cynic in me believes it could all be hype. I guess I'll have to wait a year and find out!

Ours has flowers too! We weren't sure what they were but only 2 fly traps have sprouted and no more seem to be coming through 🤔 but the flowers are blooming. We have 5 bloomed and 6 ready to bloom.

I wish there was a unified document / webpage / video that put all of the info into an easy to understand format. I understand the fediverse now but it was confusing until it clicked. If there was resources that boiled it all into layman's terms, I think there would be higher adoption and the fediverse itself would really take off
