I had surgery during COVID and had to find a hobby I could do sitting down so I got into smoking. No, the other kind, like barbecue. If you already have a charcoal grill you're done. There are fancy setups that you can get later if you decide you like the hobby, but I started with a Weber kettle grill I already had for burgers and hot dogs and used it for two years just fine.

I am going to go ahead with canva.com! It's a website I have been frequently visiting for a good while now, it's for designing. Heck, I even designed the current logo using Canva! it's a great easy to use software :)

As a child, I woke up once to see my plushies and figures on top of my shelf facing the opposite direction they were before I'd gone to bed. Rather than facing towards my window, they were turned towards the wall. I simply can't come up with an explanation that makes sense to me. I obviously didn't do it myself. Nobody in my family would care to do such a prank. It was a very high shelf; you'd have to climb up on my bed to be able to easily reach the top. And I'm pretty sure, between my loud-arse door and the night light from the corridor being in my face and me generally being a light sleeper, I would've woken up if someone did enter and especially put a foot on my bed to reach the top of the shelf.

This is probably the only spooky thing that has happened to me (so far!): a couple months ago I was traveling for work and staying in a hotel. The room had a balcony but I tried the sliding door when I first got there, and it would not budge, even though I checked I had unlatched it properly. It was just plain stuck so I relatched it and gave up on my dream of balcony coffee mornings for the week. The night before I left, I was sitting in bed reading on my tablet and I saw something moving out of the corner of my eye. I looked up to see the sliding door opening entirely of its own accord. There was nobody on the balcony, there was no earthquake that had jostled it loose, there had been no housekeeping during my stay to open it, it wasn't an electronic lock, I had no explanation! So I got up and closed the door and tried opening it again. Stuck?! I am not a ghosts person but even I was like...that is some ghost nonsense, I would totally do this if I was a ghost.

Yess I love these type of threads. Glad I don’t have to shift through tons of horny posts to find it lol.

I remember when I was a kid, not exactly sure what age but young enough to have one of my older sister bathe me/keep supervision. After pulling the rubber drain plug, my sister left the bathroom to grab clothes for me to change into. I remember getting the sense something was watching me and looked down at the drain to see a pair of eyes staring at me. I got so scared that I dipped out of the bathroom. Really confused me since the bathroom was on the second floor and there is no way it’s possible for anything/anyone to be between the floors. Luckily that was the only unexplainable thing I have ever encountered but it definitely contributed to my fear of something watching me in the bathroom.

I started learning stuff that I missed in school. Mostly science classes. Algebra is awesome! and biology is mindblowing, and don't get me started on chemistry. And I started this from the middle school level.

I tried coding before, but it didn't hook me. Not a good thing for a hobby, but this is different.

So, learning something new and then researching it on your own and discovering newer and newer fascinating things, is the way to go for me.

If you're looking for a place to learn with more or less a structured curriculum, Khan Academy is my go-to for basically any academic subject.

@Calcifer Reading can be free with a library card. I use Libby on my phone to check out books. But if you'd rather not have to wait for more popular releases, Amazon does have Kindle Unlimited. I think it's $12 per month, you can check out something like 10 books at a time.

Edit: I totally forgot about Scribd! Way better than Kindle Unlimited cause it has audibooks and Magazines too, for only $12 a month.

-When I was little, I believed that researchers were really fighting each other when I heard "researchers are fighting to find a cure for this disease".

As a researcher, that's not entirely wrong sometimes 🙃

  1. DIY is pretty much just a bunch of different hobbies and collecting tools you don't need.
  2. Biking is great exercise and a used bike can be gotten for cheap, its not hard on your knees like running, cars would be trying to murder you but hey they things we do for fun.
  3. Reading, these days I basically just use Moon Reader Pro on my phone to TTS all my books but almost the same. Scribd is tenish bucks a month and its basically Netflix for audiobooks and currently they aren't competing with publishers like Netflix had to do so they have a massive selection, full of big names.
  4. Dancing seems pretty cool, Yoga, Tai Chi, Calisthenics.

Gardening, knitting (or other needlework), reading, walking and hiking, foraging are all pretty low start up cost. Some can get more expensive, but that all depends on you.

Yarn gets crazy expensive.

Set up and moderate a community here. You’ll get to interact with lots of interesting people and always have some exciting new challenges waiting in your inbox, though of course the downside is that you might be overwhelmed with praise for your tireless efforts.

Learn the harmonica

BreakNeckJim,

You should definitely set up the harmonica magazine, golden opportunity right there 😂

Coding! I'm a scientist, so I admittedly know far more R than Python, but Python would probably be the best choice for most people.

Both are free and it can be incredibly satisfying solve problems. There are books with puzzles to solves (e.g. Automate the Boring Stuff for Python) and other free initiatives with puzzles (e.g. Advent of Code in the lead up to Christmas). Coding opens up a whole new world of laziness too, once you realise the vast many things you can use it for 😉

I thought adults knew what the hell they were talking about.

And I thought the weirdly anthropomorphic looking chimney of the building on the hill across from my house was a giant robot waiting to be activated in case aliens invaded.

Irresponsible answer based on my hobbies: gaming. Most people have a phone these days, or better yet a tablet or Chromebook, and there are plenty of very good titles on there, many supporting Bluetooth controllers no less. You pick up Minecraft for $8, and that's hours and hours of game. A full-fat game console like the Xbox Series S is relatively way more expensive, but that has the bonus of being a sort of all-encompassing little box that does games, streaming media, web browsing, social features, etc. all on a big screen from the couch.

Helpful answer based on what I know I should be doing right now: exercise. While full sets of exercise equipment can be costly, it costs nothing to do push-ups, crunches, a nice brisk run, or whatever else like that while watching TV or listening to music. Certain simple stuff like lower-weight weights aren't that bad either, and regionally, gym memberships might not be that bad.
