@mariyadelano It’s probably silly, but one of the best experiences I had was having to care about EBITDA. (Wikipedia page is pretty good)
Building a spreadsheet that lets you track that on a weekly basis forces you to find out where the revenue is coming in from and where your operating expenses lie, without getting into the weirder bits of asset depreciation or tax law.
That’s not the same as budgeting, but it will pretty quickly give you constraints for a budget.
@mariyadelano It’s a long acronym - but basically, it’s your revenue (money coming in) minus operating expenses (payroll and other recurring costs, e.g., monthly subscription fees to a CRM). You don’t subtract taxes and one time costs (capital expenditures, e.g., buying a server or new desks) and other stuff.
A fair critique of EBITDA is that capital expenditures are necessary. But as a raw measurement of “what does it take to run the business if we didn’t change anything”, it’s helpful.
