Upgraded to iOS 17.3.1. All my #HomeKit settings are gone. FFS. Weirdly, my wife can still see the shared home, but then she’s still on 17.2.1.

Alexa just worked. Why can’t this?

jodmentum,

@craiggrannell last three updates I’ve had to trash and reinstall express vpn. The last two updates I lose internet and have to search for an adapter to plug in Ethernet. Grrrrrr.

@craiggrannell

I’ve got an automation that sets my watch display to always on when I start a workout… and back to normal when the workout ends.

It stopped working with 17.3.1

@philsplace I long ago gave up with exercise automation. I’d be 15 minutes into a workout on the elliptical trainer and the watch would be oblivious.

rjfaas,

@craiggrannell I’m moving and I’m seriously debating continuing with HomeKit. I’m not a big fan of Amazon but Alexa is so much easier, more reliable and cheaper.

I’m not sure I want to deal with the hassle of HomeKit that I went through in my old place.

craiggrannell,
@craiggrannell@mastodon.social avatar

@rjfaas It certainly doesn’t make me want to buy a single other thing that’s reliant on this. The inability to share the home with my wife is infuriating. (Last time we got it to work by… going away from the house for a week! So clearly something got stuck. But because Apple is so opaque, it’s impossible to know what’s causing problems.)

@craiggrannell @rjfaas If Apple would just provide any fucking ability to troubleshoot other than log out of iCloud / remove your Home.

@craiggrannell@mastodon.social avatar

@angry_drunk @rjfaas Or support staff also helpfully suggesting resetting all of your equipment to factory settings, as if that’s actually an option.

As for logging out of iCloud, that is if your kit will actually let you. Some of mine resolutely refuses to do so. My Mac just won’t log out.

@craiggrannell iOS 17 has been a real up and down for me. Up till December, all good. 17.2 goes on. Battery starts dying - 20% to zero instantly. Back of phone warm to the touch at times. iOS 17.2.1 refuses to install OTA. Had a new battery put in. Better for a week. 17.3 goes on via MacBook and we’re back to the same.

craiggrannell,
@craiggrannell@mastodon.social avatar

@marksemczyszyn I’ve found Sonoma abysmal. The worst macOS I’ve ever used in terms of bugs and stability. Almost as bad as pre-macOS/OS X. iOS has been OK here but HoneKit is bloody awful.

@craiggrannell @marksemczyszyn Lucky my 2015 MBP isn’t allowed to upgrade.

@craiggrannell@mastodon.social avatar

Ah, no. My wife tried to change something and it’s all gone for her too. Excellent. Thrilled about the prospect of spending my Sunday setting all this stuff up for the third time. And then jumping through hoops trying to invite her.

It says something that most of our HomeKit set up is HomePods and Apple TVs. So this is Apple kit and Apple kit. Gah.

@craiggrannell My house remains in one piece, thankfully!

@jamesthomson @craiggrannell HomeKit simply reminds me that I have no home and tells me to bugger off every time I try to access it. ;)

@jamesthomson I’m just so sick of it. We had a fragmented ecosystem, split between HomeKit and Alexa. So I thought: hey, let’s upgrade everything to HomeKit. That’ll be easier, right?

It’s just a total rolling disaster. The best of it is that we had a period of three months where everything apart from one plug worked.

I get that this stuff isn’t easy. But the entire point of Apple is that this kind of thing is supposed to just work. Forums are full of these errors.

craiggrannell,
@craiggrannell@mastodon.social avatar

@jamesthomson (Apple support tends to amount to ‘reset all your iPhones, HomePods and Apple TVs to factory settings and see if that helps’.)

rjfaas,

@craiggrannell @jamesthomson and then reset the devices and rebuild everything

angry_drunk,
@angry_drunk@union.place avatar

@craiggrannell @jamesthomson And then spend the next six weeks finding all the various things are are fucked by logging out of iCloud.

craiggrannell,
@craiggrannell@mastodon.social avatar

@angry_drunk @jamesthomson iCloud is great. It’s so great I on my Mac now set my default folder to ~/ rather than an iCloud folder, because Finder was routinely locking up whenever I tried to load a new Finder window. Quality. Sheer quality.

I genuinely can’t think of a worse and bugger OS than Sonoma from Apple that I’ve used since Mac OS 9.

paubhavyang,

@craiggrannell @jamesthomson Has been running HomeKit since it started, changed routers and changed so many brands. It has been almost perfect for me. Have got more than 40 accessories (lights, locks, doors, sensors) in the house.

craiggrannell,
@craiggrannell@mastodon.social avatar

@paubhavyang @jamesthomson Maybe I’m just unlucky. But forums online are full of people complaining that they can’t share their home setup with someone else. There are clearly some bugs in the system that Apple could do with squashing.

paubhavyang,

@craiggrannell @jamesthomson Or may be, I’m too lucky. I do share the home setup with my family (who is on iOS) and one of my family members uses android and his 3rd party app usage on some accessories instantly updates HomeKit status as well.
