Cyberpunk’s expansion totally overhauls the original game

So I think this is a good one for the patient gamers… I actually already played this soon after it came out and still really enjoyed it, although the world felt like it didn’t have any real people in it the city is just fantastic and visually appealing. I imagine this update will transform the game entirely, I’m looking forward to another play through when it’s out!

God I miss Stadia. Yes Xbox’s catalog is much better but Stadia was always smooth FPS wise.

I tried playing it at launch on PS4 which obviously went very poorly... I finally gave it another chance recently after upgrading my PC and have been enjoying it a fair bit. But I still have issues with it, as somebody who was waiting for its release for, what, a decade or so?

I might scratch my playthrough and wait for this DLC release before restarting now, as the changes seems quite encouraging!

Let's just hope they do a bit of QA on this release.

p.s. glad to see the sub here! I was a big time lurker on the original.

Edit: just swiping this comment from the thread on beehaw, outlining the changes which are coming to the base game with this DLC:

• virtually every system of the main game has been changed and/or updated
• police system is completely reworked with multiple tiers of NCPD/mercs chasing you down in vehicles according to your wanted level, apparently on level 5 maxtac will chase you down and it will be some sort of bossfight against them (source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=riK1i8lQwRM&t=511s)
• perks and skills have been completely overhauled, no longer simple passive stat boosts, much more active abilities like different melee finishers, a dash, or the ability to deflect bullets with melee weapons
• the difficulty curve is reworked/rebalanced
• the loot tiers are reworked
• archetypes of enemies have been redone for more variety in combat encounters
• an entirely new 6th skill tree that uses a different type of skill points (relic points) that will be used to add new abilities to your cyberware
• installing cyberware now has an effect on your body and you cant install too much or else you will go cyberpsycho (no idea what that looks like in game)
• installing cyberware now has a first person cutscene added to it, just like in the prologue at Vik’s clinic
• you can now “attune” cyberware to one of your attributes, making it more efficient if you have invested in that attribute; example here optical camo is attuned to the “cool” attribute: https://i.imgur.com/1UI9SEX.png
• armor is no longer tied to clothing, it instead tied to your cybernetics
• vehicle combat is added to the game, you can even use your katana on your bike
• vehicles are no longer bought from fixers, but bought through a website set up by mama welles
• some vehicles have guns installed on them (machine guns, rocket launchers)
• new type of infinitely replayable/repeatable missions are being added where you need to steal certain vehicles marked on your map
• new activity introduced “airdrops”, loot caches that drop randomly on the map that you can fight over and retrieve for yourself
• tons of new random events/activities are added to make the world feel more alive, like car chases and gang fights

PistolsAtDawn,

Alright CDPR, you have my attention.

Wow, this looks less like an expansion and more like a massive feature and gameplay patch. Yeah, now I'm considering picking it up too. Does look promising.

ThisIsMyNewAccount,

Wasn’t there already a major gameplay patch a couple of months ago that released around the same time as Edgerunners?

LSNLDN,

Yeah but not reallllly that major, iirc they also said they were planning on more significant updates soon, which will be these

LSNLDN,

Yeah the feature / gameplay updates come free, don’t need to purchase the expansion for those

garretble,

Oh snap. I’m sad I didn’t buy the game when it was going for $10 at Best Buy when the game was a mess. Now it’s gone back up in price. I guess I can wait until it gets back down to $10 again.

Midgitsu,

Watch it go the route of NMS where you can't get it below $30, haha.

PrunesMakeYouPoop,

It's half off on Steam right now.

I played Cyberpunk when it was new on Xbox Series X, which was fine and all. I was planning on doing another playthrough on my recently upgraded PC soon, but now I guess I'm gonna wait for this to release and reap the benefits :)

Wow, that's a big list! Good for them to keep updating it. I guess they had to to save their asses. I have one big question not addressed in those notes: Do the life paths have meaning now? Because in the current game they 100% have zero meaning or impact whatsoever. Which was a HUGE turn off for me when I played it last year.

A lot of great gameplay and system improvements, it sounds like. Won't fix the issues I had with the writing, but still cool to see, for sure. Might give it another playthrough after this comes out.

CopernicusQwark,

Do we know if everyone gets these updates, or whether that's only for people who buy the expansion?

GladeXD,
GladeXD avatar

I'm glad that I held off, especially considering I didn't have the hardware to run it at reasonable settings. I'll eventually pick it up once I get a PS5 or finally upgrade my laptop.

I did the non-patient thing of getting this game on release on the GoG store, and honestly. I had an amazing time. Loved the game, loved the characters, loved the story and loved the ending I got. Didn't have too many issues and bugs, which I realize later that was very lucky.
Having many of the most important gameplay problems reworked, and having a whole new story expansion? Oh yes please.

nttea,

I enjoyed it on release, i never bought into the hype and knew the game wouldn't be what i had hoped for already, keeping my expectations in check is really a superpower when it comes to having fun with videogames for me.

Craigerade,

I bought and played cyberpunk after the 1.5 patch and thoroughly loved the game. One of the few games I never use fast travel, I just liked driving place to place. Everything in this list of updates sounds great. Looks like they basically went through the top mods list and add all of them to the game.

Someone correct me If I am wrong. But I somewhat remember they promised the expansion was going to be free for the owners of the base game? Or I don´t know what I am talking about. Either way prob gonna play it down the line, I don´t think I am gonna make another save to experience again the base game.

darreninthenet,

I followed the game pretty closely and I don't remember reading that anywhere... they always promised DLC would be free but the full expansions would be paid for.

Oteron,
Oteron avatar

CDPR promised free DLCs in the form of small additions to the game (items, alternative looks, cars and so on), and a paid Expansion with new story and quests. That was the plan from the start. Just like with The Witcher 3.

Skyler,

I bought the original when it dropped to $30 on Steam, and it was totally worth it. By then, the major issues had been fixed, and I got my money's worth and then some. 80+ hours already.

Melon_Cooler,
Melon_Cooler avatar

I bought it day one on PC and it quickly became my favourite game of the year. The issues I experienced were mostly graphical (texture pop-in, t-posing NPCs), I only had to reload a save once to fix something. A Skyrim playthrough the same year had more game breaking issues lol

tjikko,

Sounds good. I haven't tried yet, but I will eventually. Sometimes it really does pay off to be a patient gamer... wait for the price to fall and the bugs and weirdness to get sorted out.

I just started No Man's Sky, from what I hear, it has improved a lot over the years.

Nms is one of those games I keep going back to. With all of the updates there are so many different ways to play. It can be as chill or hardcore as you want it to be and you will never run out of content.

GreatBigJerk,

The game got a lot of shit for coming out half baked, but it was a lot of fun.

mkbandit,

And I was just about to give this another try. So guess I am waiting. Can't wait!

aLoggerNamedRay,

As well as the amount of time CD Projekt has committed to creating this expansion – the base game released almost three years ago – the improvements added with Phantom Liberty are enabled by the decision to jettison the technically flawed last-gen console versions and utilise the additional memory available to new-gen-only games.

Sounds like you’re out of luck if you bought on ps4… makes sense but the game really never should have been released on last gen systems.

Midgitsu,

I agree. Feels like a lot of those games that release at the end of a console's life end up in a bad place because they're held back by trying to run on old hardware. Borderlands 3 drove me insane because it ran like hot trash on last gen and wish they would have just focused on one or the other. I mean that game also would have benefited from another full year in development given how terrible the launch and first year of that game was but that's a different story.

Great, maybe I’ll get cyberpunk after I finish Diablo 4.
And System Shock Remake.
And Dredge.
And Amnesia Bunker.

Jesus I have too much of a backlog 😭

Well that makes me more interested in trying it. I bought Cyberpunk sight unseen because it was CDPR and then everyone complained about it so I never played it.

I received it as a gift for my birthday, so I played it on release. Possibly the funniest game I've ever played due to the glitches, weird behavior, etc.

I definitely fall into the category of "patient gamer", so it may be time I check it out.

BorkBork,
BorkBork avatar

I got it on GMG drm-free and my children will enjoy this game

DarkThoughts,

I unfortunately got lured into the false promises of the fans hyping up the post launch updates to be more than what they really were. Maybe this time they fix it for good, although I will continue to have my doubts. The amount of time it took for them to fix the stupid FPS degradation issue alone makes me mad when I just think about it. And that doesn't even cover the fundamental gameplay issues & shortcomings, or the lackluster story.
