The Buchanites Part Two : Flight into the Wilderness

In the second part of our wee series on the Buchanites, Elspeth encounters some serious opposition to her beliefs. After meeting Hugh White, Elspeth stayed with him in Irvine, and he let her speak to his congregation. Very quickly, Elspeth's beliefs were stirring up animosity and wrath among the people of the Northern Ayrshire town.

Here is the third video in my series about Elspeth Buchan and her followers, the Buchanites.
This one deals with the persistent rumours about Infanticide that dogged the cultists after they arrived at Closeburn in Nithsdale.

The Buchanites settled at Buchan Hall on the land of New Cample Farm and had lived here for almost 3 and a half years waiting for Armageddon to come. When a strange voice was heard speaking from the clouds one midnight, Elspeth concluded that her followers needed to purify themselves and instituted a 40 day fast.

After the failed flight from the top of Templand Hill in Closeburn, the Buchanites were expelled from Closeburn Parish and settled in Urr Parish at Lower Auchengibbert, close to what is now largely known as Crocketford.

@Alternatecelt you'll have seen this, @barfilfarm ?

Here it is, the last of my wee videos about the Buchanites.

After Elspeth's passing and Hugh White's desertion, Andrew Innes became the defacto leader of the Buchanites that remained at Crocketford. For 50 long years, he lived with the secret of what had happened to Elspeth's body, while patiently waiting for her return.

@Alternatecelt A great set of videos, brilliantly told. Big congrats for these.

@DarkGalloway
Thank you!
I have been wanting to do the Buchanites since I started doing videos, but there's so much to tell about them, I wanted to do it right.
I'm pleased how they have turned out, but I am thinking of editing them all together into a single supercut too, just to see if that's something people might enjoy.

@Alternatecelt It's not the kind of story you can just skip over is it. So we'll done for sticking with it. Look forward to the super cut (then the movie)!

@DarkGalloway
Lol, aye, a movie would be interesting! A bit out of my budget, like, but there's plenty of excitement for a movie!

DarkGalloway,

@Alternatecelt I reckon Andrew Scott as Rev White, Josie Lawrence as Elspeth and Toby Jones as Andrew Innes, as I think it is obligatory to have Toby Jones in every drama/comedy.

@DarkGalloway
Who would cameo as Robert Burns?

DarkGalloway,

@Alternatecelt Rory Kinnear in a 1970s third div footballers wig 😀

@Alternatecelt @DarkGalloway David Tennant doesn't have the face for it, but my feeling is he would give a damned good performance.

@Alternatecelt Brilliant little video. Its a most amazing tale. Have you read about Joanna Southcott (the Woman of the Apocalypse)? There are a lot of similarities between her and Lucky Buchan.

Alternatecelt,
@Alternatecelt@mastodon.scot avatar

@DarkGalloway
She's mentioned in The Buchanite Delusion that was my main source. There was another woman in America too, who founded the Shakers, but I forget her name.

@Alternatecelt I think there was an episode on In Our Time devoted to Joanna Southcott and 18th C Millenarian sects, you may find interesting. It may still be on BBC Sounds.

@DarkGalloway
Sounds fascinating, will have a listen!

@Alternatecelt Blimey - can't find it now. Just had a look through and despite nearly being side-tracked a million times, couldn't find it. I wonder if it was part of a program about some thing else.

But I did find this...
