Neoliberal economics is killing the arts
By Tim Lutton, originally published by Red Pepper May 28, 2024
"...As a society, we must resist art-as-capital, where it is reduced to pure exchange value in a market of commodities. There, any politically-charged and counter-hegemonic content is rendered powerless, constituted as a stable harmonisation of the dominant socio-political order and drowning out all contradictions.
...In the present era, the tendency towards total marketisation of artistic production accompanies perpetual austerity and an atomised rentier economy that is shrinking public and social life. Without a rupture from neoliberal capitalism in general, the means to make new, generative and disruptive art disappears, and much else that is meaningful in our lives will follow after. The rest is silence."
@shekinahcancook My wife and I try to donate a large chunk of our yearly income to the performing arts. And we have also volunteered our time.
It makes us very happy when we bring a person who has never seen a live play to the theatre and have them recognize that the experience is quite different, and often much more emotional, than TV and film.
It's coming together nicely. Some great performances. We're at the point now where I have a rehearsal just about every night until opening, despite all my other commitments, so please come and reward my perseverance!
This has to be the campest, most ludicrously sequinned, joyous shows I've seen in quite some time. I knew nothing about Pippin, but my dad saw it back in the 1970s and loved it - so I snagged us a couple of tickets. The story itself is fun enough; an over-privileged princeling goes off to […]
If you are near Dundee this week and love #theatre, go see the Dundee Rep’s adaptation of one of Scotlands iconic novels, Sunset Song. Brilliant production, hugely moving story of a woman’s life in rural Scotland in early 20th century. #theatre#dundee#scotland
Opening Night is complex, fascinating, and flawed. It is baffling that this is somehow less than the sum of its parts. The acting and singing are incredible - Nicola Hughes in particular has a magnificent stage presence. The directing and staging is wonderfully innovative - giving even the most distant seat a close-up view. The […]
During our recent trip to South Africa, we were able to watch a production of Spring Awakening in Cape Town. It was the third production that I've seen of the musical, and based on my tracking I have now seen live art performances in 21 cities across 12 countries. #theatre
@timrichards the only non English production that I saw was the French musical Hunchback of Notre Dame in Montreal, not from Disney. (And also opera with Italian libretto but they were all performed in Australia so they probably don't count)
This is a blast from start to finish. I haven't heard such screams of laughter since, well, the last Mischief production I saw! The Mind Manger is a crap magician dealing with his shitty home life, a tosspot stooge, and an audience full of idiots. Naturally, everything that can go wrong does go wrong. Imagine […]
@Edent strong agree with all that. We booked tickets on spec for last weekend and really enjoyed it! Just the right kind of silly for our family tastes.
Bonjour :mastodon:,

I'm not surprised that My Neighbour Totoro is getting a West End transfer. It's a magical night in the theatre and I'd very much recommend getting along to the Gillian Lynne next year if you can...
An outstanding and joyous show. Through Rachael Stirling we catch a glimpse of Sarah Siddons - the acclaimed 18th/19th century actress. Stirling - and the entire cast - are exceptional. They transport us backstage with a dazzling array of characters. Every single actor gets a scene-stealing moment - it's lovely to see a cast having […]
Biggie Announcement: I'm officially a #playwright! Woohoo!
My comedy 10-minute play "Carthago Delenda Est" was selected to be produced - with real actors on stage - for the Civic Theatre of Greater Lafayette's Play Festival! I'm giddy with all the good feelings. 🤩 If you're in #LafayetteIN over the last weekend in June, come out and see it!
Thanks to all the people who helped proofread, and gave me suggestions to make it better.
