I wonder whatever happened to the child of a friend of my sister, whose parents gifted him—some time around the year two double-aught zero—the name “Anakin”. He’d be in his early 20s now, if he wasn’t beaten to death in the schoolyard.

vik,
@vik@mastodon.nzoss.nz avatar

@Unixbigot I do recall a young brat in a supermarket in New Lynn around that time being chided by Mum going "Oh do stop that, Anakin!" Possibly one and the same?

Should anyone be interested, I've put the main build files up for the 3D printer prototype here https://www.printables.com/model/876888-reprapmicrons-openflexure-block-stage

Greenhouse now monitored by (homebrew ESP32 with two Dallas temp sensors bwahahaha) - air temperature and water temperature. When the Athom relay board turns up, it'll run nutrient into the water as well. All in a nice, 3D printed box. That's me for the day.

@sbisson Funny, I was thinking much the same myself.

No glass cutter? No problem. Genuine Swiss Army Knives have a saw/file blade made from very hard steel. The squared-off edge of the tip makes for a most excellent glass cutter.

A with a 4mm a side working volume means a cramped workspace. I've been holding the glass beds in place with blue tape, which has its own issues. So here's my fix for that, a teeny weeny clamp.

- having difficulties using any Bluetooth device as a media player. I must be missing something. Would rather like to get it talking out of a cheap, little Bluetooth speaker. Anybody done this?
I have Bluetooth up and running - I know 'cos it has detected the wife's toothbrush! But won't detect Bluetooth audio devices in or out of pairing mode. Weird.

Great, just what we need to eliminate range anxiety and encourage EV ownership: Limiting when you're allowed to charge your car on all chargers.

https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/516449/govt-must-regulate-to-smooth-evs-and-data-centres-demand-on-power-grids-vector

I generate my own power. How will that work?

vik,
@vik@mastodon.nzoss.nz avatar

@haakon Not if there is a requirement on people to use the power at that point to, say, keep their job. Then it just becomes a most excellent revenue stream and does not actually reduce demand.

Smart home kiwis, any recommendations for smart locks? I want to move everything to Home Assistant but I'm currently half HA half Apple HomeKit. I can't seem to find any matter capable locks for NZ. The ones the door man recommends all require a WiFi bridge and also use a cloud for remote access (can't be done locally) but I guess that's okay for now.

vik,
@vik@mastodon.nzoss.nz avatar

@keoni I bought a standard solenoid-operated door lock and rolled my own driver. All you'd need is a source of 12V and an Athom ESP32 relay board.

What they shouldn't tell you in the manual: Use the Supervisor Panel. It no longer exists. The Control Panel a quick web search tells you to use instead no longer exists either...

vik,
@vik@mastodon.nzoss.nz avatar

@frenck You wanted me to look for pages that tell the user to use the Supervisor. Here's one for setting the wifi: https://community.home-assistant.io/t/guide-connecting-pi-with-home-assistant-os-to-wifi-or-other-networking-changes/98768
I take it advice is still "don't use the wifi?"
