The binge continues unabated. These are some of the CDs I listened to (a lot) in the 90s. They're almost tame compared with some of his other works, e.g., Dance Nos 1-5, Music In 12 Parts, and the operas, which some find a bit challenging. There's something about his intense, repetitive loops that suggests autistic stimming and I'd be interested to know if the music of Glass (and other minimalist composers) resonates with other autistic people.

PeteLittle1970,

@Richard_Littler @actuallyautistic oh yes. Very much so. See exhibit A. Last.fm scribbles. (Only an indication as I don't scrobble CDs/LPs being played on the stereo..) ;)

Just a quick follow-up to this. Somebody on the bird site reminded me that part of the libretto for Philip Glass' opera 'Einstein on the Beach' (which, even though it's 4 hours long, I have listened to 4 times this week) was written by a 13-year old autistic kid called Christopher Knowles. Now I know why I'm faintly obsessed with the texts, which repeat & repeat & repeat (& repeat)...

@Richard_Littler @actuallyautistic Makes sense, and I can relate.

@Richard_Littler @actuallyautistic I remember in the early 90s this would go on whenever we did acid

ImpossibleUmbrella,

@Richard_Littler @actuallyautistic I did not know that! Totally makes sense now you say it. I confess I am a still slightly obsessed with Knee’s 1 & 5 - which I’ve been know to listen to on loop.

@Richard_Littler @actuallyautistic I am not a Glass fan but when you mentioned “intense, repetitive loops,” I thought of the John Luther Adams piece “For Lou Harrison,” which got its claws into me years ago and never let go. Adams has many lovely (and intense) compositions in his oeuvre besides that one - check it out.

Oh, definitely. I took my wife to see Koyanisqaatsi when it was first released, without really knowing what to expect. Since then I've been a full-on Glass enthusiast.

@Richard_Littler @actuallyautistic not personally no, I actually find it kinda irritating. Though not as much as Einaudi. There are some Glass pieces that I've been ok with (sorry, can't remember which ones right now though)

@Richard_Littler @actuallyautistic I generally find minimalism unsatisfying, I think the only minimalist music I noticeably enjoy is Arvo Pärt's Spiegel Im Spiegel. It's hard for me to say what about my music preference comes from ASD as opposed to just personal preference! But I suspect a dislike of unresolved dissonance might be one thing. (resolved dissonance on the other hand can be fucking awesome)

@Richard_Littler @actuallyautistic Not that much. I found other minimalistic composers more interesting, Glass for me (the stuff I know) is a bit under-complex.

t_slider,

@Richard_Littler @actuallyautistic not sure about autistic people, but I love Koyanisqaatsi as background for coding.

Y'all seen musicForProgramming(); yet? May have some gems for you.

mathew,

@t_slider @Richard_Littler @actuallyautistic Koyaanisqatsi is definitely good for coding, as long as I can schedule some time for crying at the end.

Personally I have the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra recording of Symphonies 2 and 3. Review scores seem a hair lower than the Nonesuch release of Symphony 2, but still very good.
