Offhand thoughts on books:

So, there's this idea that kids want clear meaningful narrative, but... have you noticed kids get super into old myths that have at best murky, often nonsensical, "plots" ? Actually, now that I think about it, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, which is insanely popular, is pretty low on plot, high on mood. It's more like sketches, in the 19th century sense of it - little vignettes that don't have some kind of major arc or payoff.

AKMA,

@ZachWeinersmith

I should say, Not ‘overthinking’ but ‘taking seriously a delicate compositional issue’, and I’m impressed that you’re tackling it.

Once home to the infamous Clatty Pat's night club, this building on Great Western Road will be familiar to many who have lived, worked or studied in the west end of Glasgow. However, how many have noted the now-faded Art Deco beauty of its upper floor, which belies it's original function.

Designed by James Lindsay and constructed around 1930, it was built to have shops of the ground floor and tea, lunch and smoking rooms on the upper floor.

AKMA,

@thisismyglasgow How recent is that photo? I'm trying to fit it into my memories of the Great Western Road…
I think I’d remember the Guinness toucan (as I do the advert on the side of Jinty McGuinty's).

If you want to destroy your brain with frothy SV technocapitalist rhetoric as well as the news this week, this would be a fantastic starting point. I’ve been staring at it for awhile and I’m just going to have to come back to it later.

Dangerous in the fantasy world of C19th, too — as Lewis Carroll wrote (of the Butcher's threat to the Bellman's pet beaver in The Hunting of the Snark):

The Beaver's best course was, no doubt, to procure
A second-hand dagger-proof coat—
So the Baker advised it—and next, to insure
Its life in some Office of note:

This the Banker suggested, and offered for hire
(On moderate terms), or for sale,
Two excellent Policies, one Against Fire,
And one Against Damage From Hail.

It now looks like, per another brilliant report by ProPublica, that our dear Justice Clarence Thomas also participated in Koch Network donor events. Is there no end to his corruption and influence peddling? Don’t answer that, I know the answer.

Not as long as he's still serving on the Supreme Court.

After two years, yesterday I stepped down as PTA head at my kids’ school. Helping run events and meetings matters, but the thing I’m most proud of was raising $25,000 to help two Afghan girls move to the UK and access the free, high-quality education they were denied at home.

What should we signal? Self-absorption? Corruption?

The binge continues unabated. These are some of the CDs I listened to (a lot) in the 90s. They're almost tame compared with some of his other works, e.g., Dance Nos 1-5, Music In 12 Parts, and the operas, which some find a bit challenging. There's something about his intense, repetitive loops that suggests autistic stimming and I'd be interested to know if the music of Glass (and other minimalist composers) resonates with other autistic people.

Oh, definitely. I took my wife to see Koyanisqaatsi when it was first released, without really knowing what to expect. Since then I've been a full-on Glass enthusiast.

Packing up for storage, without a next home in sight, at (ahem) a respectable age, is very unpleasant, especially for people with certain neurological characteristics….

AKMA,

Thanks for this suggestion! I haven’t seen a Upack or Relocube alternative here; Margaret did the leg work (and most of the arm and back work) for this move.

AKMA,

We have packed up everything that we’re ready to do without for a couple of months, and the removal firm put it into a self-store. We have a good deal for the initial term, and we hope (somewhat against the evidence) to have a job, possibly with housing, by the time that runs out. And we’re flat-sitting for friends for the immediate future (hoping that no one complains about Minke and Flora).

AKMA,

The college wants to renovate and let out the house we've been occupying. No clear pathway ahead, but we keep chasing possibilities.

Some questions that should be asked about every new piece of tech:

  • Does it actually work?
  • What are its side effects, especially for ecosystems, communities and the physical/chemical state of the natural environment?
  • What’s the lifetime carbon cost?
  • What’s the lifetime energy cost? If renewables, how much capacity is that taking away decarbonising the grid?
  • Will scale-up cause damage?
  • Who benefits most from it and who will control/regulate it for the public good?
AKMA,

@helenczerski

Plus, what's the opportunity cost of pursuing this technology rather than another?
