PeteLittle1970,

@PossiblyAutistic @actuallyautistic as a kid I was fascinated by numbers with zero mysticism involved. I liked spotting how similar numbers , ratios, angles etc cropped up in surprisingly varied locations.

Later, I excelled in Maths and later still went to uni to become a Mathematician.

But that's just me. I'm not autistic because I'm a Mathematician but I might be a Mathematician because I'm autistic as for the longest time maths was my special interest and hyperfocus.

PeteLittle1970,

@PossiblyAutistic @actuallyautistic medjool or zahidi? I like them but couldn't eat a whole bag ;) hehe

I flunked history at school.

PeteLittle1970,

@PossiblyAutistic @Autistrain @actuallyautistic I had to do three questionnaires for my autism diagnosis. Well, I say I had to. Actually I only did two and my mum had to do one on my behalf. Because a 40 something year old man needs his mummy's permission to go for an autism diagnosis!! .

It's ridiculous how autism diagnosis is still so deeply rooted in childhood diagnosis. Even during my subsequent interviews I was told to bring someone with me who could clarify questions (i took my wife) and at one point the interviewer asked about "my play" before rapidly "correcting" herself to "my hobbies"

I never told my mum the reason. I just told her it was for a job interview and for psychometric profiling.

I've attached a screen shot of this part of my diagnosis report.

@fallenvalkyrie @actuallyautistic @AutisticAdam I have walking music, relaxing music, angry fighty bad mood music, blissful summer day music, music for when it's icy cold and the wind is driving stinging rain horizontally, music for day dreaming, music for zoning out, music for concentration, music for reading, music for programming, and perhaps somewhat surprisingly, music for when I really just want ACTIVELY listen to music!! :D

    Hello, people!

I hope your week is going well! Are you ready for a new ?

This time it will be electrifying!

Because what it will be asked is: five songs about electricity.
It can be also metaphorical, not just literal. Like the word "shock", who has different meanings.

    Be prepared for !

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic it's not for me. Don't believe in anything even remotely approaching the spiritual, mystical, supernatural, nor the divine.

We're meat robots genetically programmed to replicate our genes. Eventually we break or wear out, and switch off for ever.

We weren't conscious before we were born .. I see no reason why we should remain conscious after we die.

We're here for a minuscule period of time on the galactic scale in the grand scheme of things.

A meaningless brief blip that wont make a huge dent on the universe in general which too, in time, will wear out and "die"

I'm cool with the idea of impermanence.. means no matter how bad I screw up this 1 life it really won't matter in end :) hehe

My wife is due back tonight after being away for 10 days. I've done my best to keep the house in order, look alter her cat and water the plants.

I've even mostly managed a modicum of self care, remembering to eat (albeit junk and usually late) and keep myself healthy.

However, I have been left to my own devices and I'm notoriously bad with my executive functioning.

So, wearing this T-Shirt today to greet my wife when she gets home later this evening.. Just in case. ;)

3 years ago my wife cycled to the doctor for an appointment. On arrival she realised she'd forgotten her bike lock.

She called and me we agreed she'd park it and go in, and I'd race there and lock it up. I needed to do it quick not just to avoid the bike being stolen. It also meant leaving one of my kids at home when they were a bit young.

I grabbed the first (cheap) lock lying around, raced over, locked and got back within 15 mins. A hero! 🦸🏻‍♂️

Later my wife sent some pictures of my efforts.

Blue bike frame with a very cheap, basic lock resting on the lower part of the frame, not attached to the bike at all.

    PeteLittle1970,

    @matt @ruari I use the tried and tested Pee-Wee method ;)

Actually not far off. I have a Abus Granite, An Oxford Alarm D. An oxford Disk brake alarm and a Abus cafe lock (not shown the chain that clips into the cafe lock)

admittedly I tend now to use all of them at the same time. But just because you're paranoid it doesn't mean they're NOT out to get you ;)

(the Cafe lock is, as it suggests, for when I'm nipping into a shop or a cafe and not leaving my bike out of sight for more than a moment. The cable just clips in and anchors to a lampost etc)

the Alarm D and the Abus granite are the two I use most.

The Disk brake alarm is only used infrequently in rougher areas as it's SERIOUSLY loud.

My thoughts on the Self-dx/official dx conversations.

Hands up any OFFICIAL Dx'd individual who DIDN'T first think they were Autistic/ADHD BEFORE they went down the official route?

    anyone? precious few I bet.

I imagine few to none woke up one day and decided to partake in a long drawn out and upsetting process to prove they weren't autistic then were surprised to find out they were.

It seems to me that we're ALL self-DX at SOME point and the ONLY difference between self and official DX is one has a piece of paper that essentially says "Yeah, you were right all along!"

It's 100% valid and ok to self-dx. I would propose that most of us do.

And any Dx is not set in stone. They're fluid and in flux. I am fortunate and privileged enough to have an official diagnosis of Autism.. But I suspect I might be more ADHD or AuDHD at least. My paper diagnosis won't change what's written on it but my personal diagnosis can change.

It's 100% valid to say you're autistic then veer to saying you're ADHD and back again until you find somewhere you fit.

And in the end it's just a word. You exist within a fuzzy space surrounded by others in their fuzzy spaces. Sometimes those fuzzy spaces overlap, sometimes those fuzzy spaces are separate but no two fuzzy spaces are 100% alike.

You define your identity. Not a piece of paper.

To reiterate once more , SELF DX Is 100% valid

For anyone having issues with the hashtag, there is also and @allautistics (the latter being a recently created group that you can follow and post to).

They are intended for anyone who is (or thinks they might be) autistic (formally or self-diagnosed).

    PeteLittle1970,

    @26pglt @allautistics @actuallyautistic

    Interesting conversation on and hashtags.

Thank you. I'll try and remember to use the new tags in my posts.

Likewise I always assumed the ActuallyAutistic tag was all encompassing and for formal as well as Self-DX and was created to separate posts from the "Autism Moms" using or in their posts on Twitter/X.

However good points have been raised and taken on board. I'll certainly use the new tags in combination with the old to hopefully get the message across that it's for all of us, formal or otherwise.

The binge continues unabated. These are some of the CDs I listened to (a lot) in the 90s. They're almost tame compared with some of his other works, e.g., Dance Nos 1-5, Music In 12 Parts, and the operas, which some find a bit challenging. There's something about his intense, repetitive loops that suggests autistic stimming and I'd be interested to know if the music of Glass (and other minimalist composers) resonates with other autistic people.
    @actuallyautistic

    PeteLittle1970,

@Richard_Littler @actuallyautistic oh yes. Very much so. See exhibit A. Last.fm scribbles. (Only an indication as I don't scrobble CDs/LPs being played on the stereo..) ;)

    PeteLittle1970,

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic i understand what people mean when they mention it. The sort of nervous hyperactive enthusiasm for a project.

but if "autistic energy" is a separate thing from other forms of personal "drive" or "commitment"? I would say no.

Autistics and ADHDers may have more "drive" and hyperfocus may push them to dedicate more time to a task but I wouldn't say they have more "energy" than others.

it's a bit "othering" IMHO. If an NT has drive and ambition they are "driven" or "committed" or "dedicated" but if an ND has similar drive and ambition it's simply fobbed off as "hyperfocus autistic energy"

but that's just my (probably incorrect) take on the matter ;D

    PeteLittle1970,

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic if I manage triggers and stressors I can actually manage surprisingly well.

I will spend my "spoons" judiciously and if I start feeling my fuse getting shorter I'll play my autism card and take myself out of the situation for a while to regulate things.

It doesn't always work. But at least this way I minimise the periods of meltdown and burnout to a few sporadic occasions.

Knowing your triggers is key and knowing what to do to get out of triggering situations (where possible) is vital.
