Anyway, my sleep schedule is completely screwed up again. Woke up at 3PM+ yesterday, and haven’t slept since (it’s now 7AM here where I live).

I wonder if sleep schedule issues are something that other people face as well?

miaoue,

@eonity i see you've already received several replies saying essentially the same thing, but i'm another with a delayed and unpredictable sleep pattern and melatonin has made the biggest improvement for me. there are a lot of misconceptions about how to take it- i recommend trying a low dose (<1mg) around 2 hours before you would like to sleep. taking it this way mimics the natural release of melatonin in the brain (or maybe i should say, what the brain would naturally do, if the brain worked as intended and agreed with my preferences about when to go to sleep).

@eonity @actuallyautistic very much so. As a child, I slept little and only on my terms—my poor parents.

    @devxvda @actuallyautistic wait, vitamin D as well?

    I wonder if that also plays into the skin issues most of us face (having some persistent rash/eczema on my hands right now).

    Either way, thanks for the tip. Maybe I really should try some vitamin D supplements and see if I can kill two birds with one stone (skin and sleep issues) here.

    wakame,

    This is not medical advice!

    I normally (if I don't forget it) take about 10.000-20.000 I.E. Vitamin D per day. Makes a lot of difference for me, especially regarding muscle stiffness.

    And yes, there are warnings about taking more than 1.000 I.E. per day.
    On the other hand, I read a paper a while ago about using Vitamin D to "treat" children "for autism" (more likely: If they feel better, they can mask more...) that also stated that poisioning from Vitamin D is very uncommon.

    Therefore: No medical advice, just my position and maybe a hint to proper research it instead of taking my perspective at face value :blobcatpeek:

    Hypothesis: I take this less often than I think.

    So far, I didn't have any side effects.

    Do you think it is possible that the side effects just don't manifest for some reason?
    Because I would definitely prefer some proper feedback from my body if it was too much.

    @eonity @actuallyautistic I don’t work due to disabilities. My sleep pattern is chaotic at best. Sometimes midnight to 8am, but it slips around the clock, every couple of weeks. Currently 5-6am - 1-2pm. In a month to 6 weeks it’ll be the exact opposite.

    No amount of walks, milky drinks, camomile tea or hot baths or any of the other sleep hygiene things I have been told over the years, alters it.

    @eonity

    I have a rotating sleep pattern - about every 3-5 days the times I go to sleep & wake slip an hour or 2 later.

    Currently I go to sleep about 9am & wake up about 4pm but it’ll change soon.

    I spent my whole life thinking I had incurable insomnia because the vast majority of days my body point blank refused to sleep in the hours it was supposed to.

    The only upside to being too ill to work now is that I can sleep when I need to.

    Pathfinder,

    @eonity
    That's pretty much the story of my life. Different sleep issues at different times. I think it's fairly common for us.

    eonity,
    @eonity@mastodon.social avatar

    @Pathfinder I wonder if there’s a way for us to at least manage such issues so they don’t impact our quality of life as much. You (or anyone else) have any tips?

    Pathfinder,

    @eonity
    I'm afraid I've never found any. I'm not even sure why my sleep dysfunction goes even more tits up now and again. Sometimes it is stress, sometimes tiredness, but other times... God knows.

    @adelinej @Pathfinder hmmm… maybe I should try and get out and take walks and exercise more often then, and see if that might help.

    I might consider melatonin supplements as well, if things really persist. I will see how it goes.

    @adelinej gotcha. Will be aware of that if and when I decide to take the melatonin route.

    TheAutisticTooter,

    @eonity @actuallyautistic That is my sleep schedule. I've fought against it for decades.

    @TheAutisticTooter @actuallyautistic so guess I’m not the only one then, huh.
