Wondering if it’s a common experience or just a problem I have? How to get an allistic person to stop arguing something with me when it’s clear we’re not going to reach a consensus?

I’ve learned to not use the phrase “agree to disagree” as this gets interpreted as “I’m right, you’re wrong” (?!). But the whole concept of “since it seems impossible for us to reach a consensus on this point why don’t we stop wasting time talking about it” seems to just not land.

Lemlems,
@Lemlems@mastodon.social avatar

I can’t work out if some allistic people just cannot accept that premise or if it’s that I don’t know the right code for how to convey it.

Would love to hear other people’s thoughts and experiences.

PS I should probably clarify - this is in situations where I have a relationship with the person that I want to keep. If it’s some random online I can obviously just refuse to talk to them any more or, if necessary, block. I’m asking about situations that require a more graceful exit.

I'm about half-way through my re-read of all of Terry Pratchett's novels. Tonight, I finished "Jingo".

Terry seemed to have realized by "Jingo" that Watch Novels need to be something other than 'someone tried to off Vetinari'. This one is quite different and yet... still very familiar because the Watch have little choice but to remain true to their characters. "Jingo" is also probably the point there you realize Terry has not only gotten serious with his social commentary, but is not going to give up on social commentary, either. It is a master story-teller (still) at the top of his game. The whole novel is marvellously coherent and well-paced.

It might also be the first novel where the Turnaround is so very blatantly obvious. This is the point where Vimes realizes a fact that completely changes him from reacting to events to responding to events. You can almost hear all those Discworld fans cheering at the very moment Vimes does this shift. And what's even more delicious is that it is as a result of something very small and subtle that Vetinari does for Sam.

Ah... Vetinari. We see a lot of Vetinari in this novel, and it is words well spent. Very well spent, in fact. Little new is really provided, of course, but that's not the point. We see the man simply being himself, gently manipulating people and situations so that Ankh-Morpork doesn't lose. And that also means doesn't fight a war against a foe that would wipe the floor with it. It is also subtly impressive that we also encounter someone who is not afraid of Vetinari like most of the city is: famous inventor Leonard of Quirm.

"Jingo" is normally regarded as a Watch Novel. But by this point, Watch Novels have become Vimes Novels. It also oddly struggles to shine in the shadow of "Hogfather" and the next half-dozen novels. Quite a problem to have! But still an excellent novel.

I love Jingo so much and I was always confused why it didn’t get more credit with people generally.

The combination of social commentary with exquisitely crafted silliness (the parade bit made me literally cry laughing the first time I read it) is just chefs kiss.

And I love when more about Willikins’ true nature is revealed

For me it’s in my top 5 books, which is a high accolade given the competition.

YouTube has given me the impression that there’s some manner of comedy feud between civil engineers/planners and architects.

Anyone out there work in these fields who can confirm or deny? If this is a real thing, I feel like I need to know all about it. Is it like “protractors at dawn, you cad!”?

I’d got past my “I don’t think I stim” delusion already, but was still in my “I don’t stim often or much” delusion.

Those examples of clothing stims in particular … between those and twirling my hair, turns out I’m stimming pretty much all the time.

Finished getting my 120 lightroots and filling all my battery slots today. Absurdly pleased with myself.

Next targets are completing the remaining shrines and finding more sage’s wills (I’m thinking I’m going to be cheating on that one - I’ve explored nearly all of all three maps and have only found 4 so far so I’m obviously just not getting it with those).

8 full green batteries - I didn’t even know that blue was a thing.

Filling the first few felt like a slog, but once I committed to properly exploring all of the Depths I found that accumulating zonaite and crystals just sort of happened naturally.

Not sure I’ve the patience to upgrade them all again though. I’m not an engineer so I think what I have is enough for my needs, especially with the zonaite armour bonus

I can’t stress enough the impact that teachers’ characterisations of me, as an undiagnosed girl, had on me -well into adulthood.

The junior school teacher who called me “a wonderful butterfly”, the secondary school maths teacher who just rolled with basically everything I said & did (because he only cared that i was good at maths) and the 6th form teacher who told me I was “highly intelligent but emotionally stunted” - all affected my self image & self-worth hugely, in different ways.

Lemlems,
@Lemlems@mastodon.social avatar

Im sure / I hope that teachers are more educated about (and understanding of) their and pupils than they were when I was in school (late Palaeolithic).

But if you’re a I still urge you to put a post it note somewhere where you’ll see if every day.

Write on that post it “What I tell these kids about who they are is even more important than what I teach them about my subject”

Saw something about dating/relationships for / / people & it got me thinking.

Do we have our own dating site/app? If not, why not?

We often face barriers when it comes to the kind of F2F scenarios where couples tend to meet, we have a higher % chance to have crossover with someone in terms of relationship needs & communication style if they’re also ND & we’re more likely to be direct/honest & not waste people’s time.

And no one would fake their hobbies/interests info 😊

Interesting (and a bit depressing) article about the children of influencer parents.

A great opportunity for a reminder that children are people and an age-appropriate level of autonomy and respect for consent is essential to their wellbeing.

Children do need their grown ups to limit their choices - so that they don’t live solely on coco pops and don’t stick forks in electrical outlets - but that doesn’t make them property.

I’m finally shopping so I’m hoping some of you lovely people will have some recommendations.

I only look at my home feed so it doesn’t really matter to me what interest or group the instance focuses on - but an ND run or friendly instance would be good.

My main requirements in an instance are:

Big/supported enough that it has decent odds of being sustainable

Well moderated - squashes misogynistic, racist, ableist, transphobic, homophobic etc nonsense & has clear moderation rules.

Abled people

If you (in your role as a private person) ever feel the urge to start saying/typing words along the lines of “but why should I have to make a minor change to what I do just to include disabled people?” allow me to save you the bother by answering that question:

You don’t have to. It’s a request, not an order.

If your convenience is more important to you than inclusion then by all means you can just carry on as you were. Entirely up to you, that is your right. We all know this.

Clapping hands emojis between each word of a post: can we not do this please? And this is me being nice.
Imagine listening to a post with the words "clapping hands" or e.g. "clapping hands with light skin tone" inserted between each word. That's what it's like when you use a screen reader and come across something like that.
So it'd be like this:
it clapping hands with light skin tone is clapping hands with light skin tone very clapping hands with light skin tone annoying.

Lemlems,
@Lemlems@mastodon.social avatar

@LeeFromVT

The basic “vanilla” emoji is yellow but if you long press you get the option to have it appear in one of a variety of skin colours instead, so screen readers will read out which of those options the user has selected.

So 👏 would be differentiated from 👏🏻 and from 👏🏿

The funniest part of reveal this week has been loads of Star Citizen fans declaring they won’t play Starfield and pledging “loyalty” to Star Citizen.

I don’t think video games buy you horses, my dudes. (And yes, they’re all dudes).

Lemlems,
@Lemlems@mastodon.social avatar

@GossiTheDog

There does seem to be a subset of fans that require antagonism in their fandom.

The notion that there must be teams (Star Wars vs Trek, PC vs console, Marvel vs DC, PS vs X Box, Android vs iPhone etc) and people must pick one and then hate the opposing team, is baffling to me.

If someone is like “I have created an imaginary division and now we must fight about it” I take that as an indication that we are not ever going to understand each other and leave the conversation.

I love (and I mean LOVE) both &

But I wish they didn’t hide stuff so well. I don’t want to be led around - a big part of these games is rewarding the player for exploring & being inquisitive.

But when I finally cave & Google a solution because I’ve done all the side quests in x area but event y hasn’t triggered, only to find it’s because I needed to find an NPCs again because they have a secret 2nd quest or do the thing I’ve been trying but at a different time of day… frustrating.

Lemlems,
@Lemlems@mastodon.social avatar

@vwbusguy

Curiously enough I mind less with koroks - possibly because I have zero intention of ever attempting to find all of them.

But definitely with side quests and shrines.

Who stores a single arrow or apple inside a giant-ass crate? Who does that anyway? 😂

Speaking of crates what’s your preferred method of breaking them open? Dropping them from high up with Ultrahand? Using up some low-level melee weapon? Something else?

Lemlems,
@Lemlems@mastodon.social avatar

@gedeonm Drop with ultrahand. Despite the fact that I’m almost always fully stocked with weapons, i still guard my precious, precious weapon durability like it’s the most rare and important thing in the world.

Anyway, my sleep schedule is completely screwed up again. Woke up at 3PM+ yesterday, and haven’t slept since (it’s now 7AM here where I live).

I wonder if sleep schedule issues are something that other people face as well?

@actuallyautistic

Lemlems,
@Lemlems@mastodon.social avatar

@eonity

I have a rotating sleep pattern - about every 3-5 days the times I go to sleep & wake slip an hour or 2 later.

Currently I go to sleep about 9am & wake up about 4pm but it’ll change soon.

I spent my whole life thinking I had incurable insomnia because the vast majority of days my body point blank refused to sleep in the hours it was supposed to.

The only upside to being too ill to work now is that I can sleep when I need to.

I’m v curious about the mental process people go through when they go to post that they don’t like a thing that others are excited about & enjoying (absolutely fine, people like different things), but then decide to hashtag it or post it in a sub that’s specifically about that thing.

“I dislike this thing that others love. It’s not enough for me that my followers know that though. It is important to me that all the fans of the thing (ie the main ones following the hashtag/sub) know it too”

Lemlems,
@Lemlems@mastodon.social avatar

@Triffen

Like you I think it’s helpful when mini-reviews are hashtagged. Eg “I watched/played/read the thing. I really enjoyed x part but the y & z bits were like this & I didn’t enjoy it” Hashtagging that could start a conversation, or provide interesting/helpful information, or let people who’ve muted the hashtag avoid spoilers.

But if all they have to say is “the thing sucks” or “I don’t like the thing, it’s stupid” then i don’t get why they use a hashtag to shove that into people’s feeds

Lemlems,
@Lemlems@mastodon.social avatar
