Hmm is this an ND thing?

Ever since I can remember, I have strongly disliked pranks and have been against humor at the expense of someone else (making fun of them).

I know nice NT people also feel this way but I've felt this strongly since a very young age. Anyone else?

@dyani @actuallyautistic I’ve always thought it was distasteful and offensive.

@dyani It probably is. Our humour tends to be less pratfall, and more pun. I've always seen practical jokes as unfunny. Humour directed at ethnic groups was funnier when it was a person from that nationality poking fun at themselves. (Dave Allen, Stan Freberg, et al.)
For myself, I can laugh at people reaping the result of their own idiotic actions, as long as they don't hurt anyone else.
Funniest Home Videos lost their audience, when it was children being distressed or embarrassed by pranks. Cruelty is only funny to monsters. @actuallyautistic

@dyani @actuallyautistic I like harmless pranks, like placing my gf's plushies in silly positions or giving them props. They get a kick out of that. Vocal pranks are fun too, such as doing little impressions or throwing my voice.

I don't like messy or sticky pranks, tho.

Not autistic, ADHD, but yeah, I hate pranks. I think maybe it's the injustice of it that gets me?

@dyani @actuallyautistic I'm honestly not sure if I'm ND or NT (might be ADHD? But I'm really not sure?), but I'm fairly positive my very strong distaste for humor at someone's expense (including humor based on someone being embarrassed or cringey*) comes from my having been the butt of way too much teasing and bullying in my youth.

  • so, a lot of stuff by SNL alums is a total no-go for me

@dyani @actuallyautistic the problem with this is that these jokes get directed at the person in the room that one feels safe to make jokes at. Thats usually the odd, the outsider, the one that causes them to feel in uncanny valley. Usually the autist.

@dyani @actuallyautistic oh yes. I have always hated pranks and april fool's day. And meanness as "joking."

Some people, especially children, think that being funny is all about being mean.

@Susan60

many kids grew up admiring don rickles, and others of similar ilk.

Oooh, I remember the name, but yes, there was so much really nasty “comedy” around.

Definitely. Although, it could also be because I've been at the wrong end of it too many times.

dyani,
@dyani@social.coop avatar

@pathfinder @actuallyautistic i think that's the key reason we don't like it, but that doesn't quite explain the young age thing. or maybe i had already experienced enough of it to form that opinion?? sad!

@dyani Loathe pranks, and often loathe teasing someone "for fun" too.
