Yesterday was my 1 year AuDHD anniversary!

1 year since the most life-changing realization ever. My resting heart rate dropped by ~10 points after I figured it out.

Knowing this about myself has given me so much peace & confidence. It's given me even more compassion for myself and others. I advocate for my needs now, and I have better boundaries.

Every day I marvel at how amazing we ND folks are, and how much we bring to the world.

I so appreciate this community!

I did a lot of thinking and Autistic Bookshop needs to diversify it's income sources.

30% profit at an average of $1.97 on book sales means the store will never pay for itself.

So I created a merch collection to help.

I had some reading and writing themed designs already, so will add more later.

Google should eventually bring people to this once the store has built up some authority, which is mainly how a merch collection will help.

@ashleyspencer what about bookmarks too? Idk if people really buy those so you may want to research!

@ashleyspencer damn! was hoping they were dropshipable.

What is your favorite depression food? Or low-spoons food? Or autistic comfort food? Also has to be cheap ๐Ÿ˜“

I need ideas. I have a lot of food allergies so I'm really restricted but that doesn't mean hearing about other food doesn't give me ideas.

Boosts welcome!

I wonder what it's like to be a bug and have a rain droplet on you ๐Ÿ›๐Ÿ’ง

Would it be terrifying? It's probably like one third your weight, and it's stuck on you like some overly cuddly squishmallow made of jello. And it probably landed there with much velocity. Traumatizing!

And how do you get it off? What if it's covering your head/face parts????

(For those of you who don't know what a squishmallow is, it's a super soft big round pillow/stuffy hybrid. Edit: squishmallow, not squashmallow!)

I am very glad to be in my new house, but I am not sure I ever appreciated how much my former neighbors did NOT use power tools.

I can't even figure out what it is. A chainsaw? Weed eater? Someone drilling directly into my front lobe with a jackhammer?

dyani,
@dyani@social.coop avatar

@MsHearthWitch oh no! sounds like my neighbors! hope you have some ANC earbuds or earphones

dyani,
@dyani@social.coop avatar

@MsHearthWitch oh drat. I would hope over-ear headphones could be safer for that. I personally can't stand the pressure on my head for those so I have to do earbuds. So I hope you aren't the same!

Iโ€™ve basically turned into my grandmother. I have a โ€˜dried goods / umami boxโ€™. I know of no other more economical way to make the stocks and soups required of southern Chinese coastal cooking. Black beans, good quality dried mushrooms, dried anchovies and scallops. Central to every Cantonese and Chiu Chow kitchen. Our food does not taste the same without this stuff. (And is also whatโ€™s used by the best restaurants)

Anyone else familiar with the hearthcraft tradition of not bringing the old broom into the new house?

Getting myself a new broom and mop for the new place (they need replacing anyways). But I'm pondering on the treatment of the Roomba and Brava Jet.

My thinking is to replace the brushes and pads (needs doing anyways). So the machine is the same but the broom-esque part is new.

dyani,
@dyani@social.coop avatar

@MsHearthWitch i do this! but i never thought about the roomba part. i think it would be more meaningful to me personally if i got rid of my little floor sweeper thing, yknow the thing with the little dustpan and the hand brush that hook together as a set? and then get a new one of those. because of the connection with me, by me doing the sweeping with my hand. whereas the roomba does it by itelf. if that makes sense.

Help!

I need to export a beefy Trello board (as a JSON file) and give it to someone to browse through who has absolutely no technical experience.

I also don't know much about what I'm doing but I can follow directions and teach myself. But this person cannot, so I need to set it up for them.

So ideally a nicer format than just text, maybe interactive if possible? View-only is all we need.

One of the stray cats I feed is warming up to me. He's sooo cute. He's the most energetic cat I've ever meet. He never walks, always runs. And he is always meowing. You can't get a word in when he's around!

He is now showing me he enjoys my company, not just the fact that I feed him. He even let me hold him peacefully a couple times ๐Ÿ’–

I have named him Orange Boy ๐Ÿ˜ป

People who think those who are cold can always โ€œput on another layerโ€ have clearly never worn upwards of 5 layers at once and then tried to add yet another on top of that. ๐Ÿฅถ๐Ÿฅถ๐Ÿฅถ

Brought to you by a frozen human who is currently wearing all of her layers plus a borrowed layer and feels like a sausage.

@jonobie I have it on good authority (from a Cold Person in my family) that a heated vest is life-changing! Especially with an extra battery in rotation so it can always be on.

Reading about autism and processing what it means in my case is very interesting. But maybe most of all, it's a relief. As I start to write this toot, tears come to my eyes.

I've kicked myself so many times in different situations for not being smart enough. I guess my doctoral degree is counter-proof. Anyway, I've struggled with my identity as a scientist a lot. This has happened especially at conferences. I've felt so out of place there. I haven't been able to discuss many topics. I haven't been able to follow all the talks.

Or when discussing a topic with a research group, I haven't been able to come up with ideas or solutions to problems. Not on the spot, but when I've had the same information in writing and have been going over it on my own, it's been so much clearer.

Therapy worked wonders with understanding what my strengths are. However, it's been even bigger relief to understand that I'm autistic and how it has affected my life. It explains so much.

@actuallyautistic

dyani,
@dyani@social.coop avatar

@LehtoriTuomo @actuallyautistic i'm so happy for you! When i identified I was autistic, my resting heart rate dropped drastically, and i have the data to prove it. It really is a huge relief knowing we are not broken.

i struggle with taking in information in certain situations too. i try to request multiple formats of information (ex: worksheet or agenda for a training session/meeting, closed captions, audiobooks along with regular books) so i can try to fill in the gaps for myself.

Are Microsoft and Adobe really the only ones making software that can create tagged PDFs?

I would rather not use either of them!

Please boost this question ๐Ÿ”

I can't find any alternatives :(

@objectinspace i know!! they're already very accessible before you export. Why don't they just translate that into the export process??? It seems easy to me. But what do i know!

How can you tell you are actually recovered from burnout? What are the signs? How does it feel different from recovery itself?

I'm trying to teach my mom that you can't just rest for a couple days and expect to be recovered from burnout. You have to reconfigure your life to be less taxing.

She's struggling with this concept and asked me how you know when your energy is actually back for good, and it's not just the pre-recovery small burst of energy which is a false alarm.

Hmm is this an ND thing?

Ever since I can remember, I have strongly disliked pranks and have been against humor at the expense of someone else (making fun of them).

I know nice NT people also feel this way but I've felt this strongly since a very young age. Anyone else?

@actuallyautistic

dyani,
@dyani@social.coop avatar

@pathfinder @actuallyautistic i think that's the key reason we don't like it, but that doesn't quite explain the young age thing. or maybe i had already experienced enough of it to form that opinion?? sad!

Finally published my blog post about sleep!

I have sleep issues. So everything I have to do in order to sleep, I figured out through trial and error over the years.

Hopefully something I wrote helps someone.

https://dyani.bearblog.dev/how-to-sleep-trial-and-error-over-the-years/

dyani,
@dyani@social.coop avatar

@rothko the antihistamines help me with the stay asleep part very well! even for big things that usually destroy my sleep like having to get up to go to the bathroom, or being woken up by some noise or a cat jumping on my head ๐Ÿ˜น

have you tried magnesium? i don't think i linked to the magnesium capsules i take, but it's a very bioavalable form (not all magnesium is easily used by the body) and that is very important for my body. and i've heard it's important for ND bodies specifically.
