whylamb,

Research has continued and I think that , despite being a great piece of software, isn't really accurate for my needs and is a bit too restrictive.

might be more what I need, so I'll look at upgrading to that at some point. I just need to work out how to self host it!

Out of curiosity —

What do you feel is missing from or restrictive with WriteFreely?

.

whylamb,

@reiver for me - lack of customisation, no simple way to embed images, development changes not being pushed to the FOSS version and lack of flexibility in adding new elements to the site.

I want to use a lot of media and other images. I'm not saying WriteFreely is bad but I think at the moment it's not the best choice for what I want to do.

If I was just making a text based blog I think it would be an excellent choice!

Regarding:
"no simple way to embed images"

What would be your ideal way (or ways) of embedding images in WriteFreely in a simple way?

For example —

Some software lets you copy-and-paste an image.

Pasting (into the text editor) causes the image to automatically upload. And then the markdown image code to the uploaded image is put into the text editor.

...

Also —

Some software have a button you can press to do the same, but with an image from your computer's drive.

...

Would either or both of these methods work?

Did you have other methods in mind?

whylamb,

@reiver well...the whole purpose of the software is a distraction free blog writing environment, so I think being able to drag and drop an image would be the most elegant solution - it auto uploads and then drops inline, maybe a little menu pops up when you double click the image that allows you to right, left or centre align and add alt text.

For FOSS implementation this would store the image inside the data folders of the instance you're running.

If you wanted to embed an image from elsewhere on the web, maybe something that automatically recognises an image link and prompts you if you want to embed it or not. But I'm not sure that's so elegant.

A button I don't think would fit the design very well - it's built without toolbars normally.

Thanks for asking!
