I’ve been blogging recently, mostly writing about papers I published before because I realised I’ve not really blogged about them. But also funders seem to like blogs and websites as a way to disseminate research.
In any case, here’s my website and blog: https://manabusakamoto.uk/ #blogging#science#Palaeontology
New post: Blog status update (June 2024): I've brought back my blogroll to my site. Also, my thoughts on why blogging still matters versus the state of social networks and Google (AI, algorithms, bigoted trolls etc.).
Mastodon: "We don't need text based post search by default or easily finding other followers because... federation reasons. And what hashtags are for, I... guess? Also, hope you like Linux?"
Bluesky: "Sure we don't have a clear business model, still missing features even Twitter and Mastodon have, and felt the need to reinvent the wheel with our own federated protocol nobody uses, but we do have... sh*tposting? Also, go back to Mastodon, tech nerds."
@dtgeek Threads: we’ve optimized our algorithm for maximum engagement, which unfortunately means if you’re even the least bit popular, it’s reply guy hell.
I’m not a fitness coach or therapist, but I can tell you nothing has improved my physical and mental health more than the simple habit of taking daily walks…
@dhester I tried hard to do a daily walk, even if it's only inside the apartment (during a bad winter's day). Agree, it does wonders for our mental and physical health.
The spotlight effect is the psychological phenomenon by which people tend to believe they are being noticed more than they really are. Being that one is constantly in the center of one’s own world, an accurate evaluation of how much one is noticed by others is uncommon…
@alexandra I have a big family—lots of siblings—so I don't think that was a factor. But I've always felt uncomfortable using social media and I'm sure it has contributed to the problem.
@dhester Ah, that would make sense too. I find I used social media sparingly, and didn't really embrace it (if that) till I discovered Mastodon, and the community here.
@ru I sometimes do too. I think to myself, I should write something for the blog just to kick things off again since it's been so long. Then I wonder what I'll write about. Then I just don't do it.
"Random, scattered, diverse, subconscious, thoughts and feelings, swirling around, just waiting for the right moment to come along, and coalesce into a solution called creativity. And that eureka moment isn’t only a setting, a place, it’s also a time."
@disassociated wrote about how creative thoughts spark at various places at various times in this #IndieWeb Carnival entry.
Bro, I can't help but notice your inner monologue has been extremely negative. Why are you being so hard on yourself? I've never heard you speak that harshly to your friends and family. Maybe you can...
The job situation sounds awful. What a shitshow to put people (you) into a situation where they have to resolve a contradiction put up by HR/management/... over a scarce resource!
Wish I were rich by now to pay for a project or two that would need to be made, but alas, no riches to be had :(

18: If you give it 4 days, chugging water and having Tylenol at the ready, it can be done
