Really loved this episode of @TheWarOnCars where they interview mayor John Bauters. Very inspirational guy, all politicians should have his philosophy of not letting fear of being re-elected prevent them from making hard or unpopular decisions. We need to be brave!

StreetPass now displays user avatars! This feature's a long time coming, and even took me contributing a small code change to the recent Mastodon 4.2 update 😉 https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/pull/26558

Along with that, the entire UI's been tightened up a bit -- hope y'all like it!

Available for all major browsers at https://streetpass.social

whylamb,

@tvler brilliant! Thank you for your work.

whylamb,

@melissabeartrix @AntennaPod there is! If you tap into an episode I have an option to press the dots on the top right and add to queue.

I am on android tho so not sure if it will work for your iPhone.

Showing "Add to Queue" option in antennapod

whylamb,

@melissabeartrix @AntennaPod no problem makes sense. And I see now! You have a pixel like me.

Maybe this article is worth reading (even if discussing it with the author on space karen's right-wing social media site isn't) Like sure we need more leftist progressivism in discourse, but it seems like it might be more "rah-rah let's spend on first" leftist that isn't getting us anywhere (except diverted into boondoggles) and fails to acknowledge that the govt has been captured by billionaires and used to impose cars on everyone.

https://www.currentaffairs.org/2023/09/the-strong-towns-movement-is-simply-right-libertarianism-dressed-in-progressive-garb

whylamb,

@enobacon long winded but some excellent points here. I reposted it because I think it's important to always examine your sources in detail, I didn't realise the founder of Strong Towns was opposed to public housing.

I like what the author has to say here - but in my view I think something incredibly drastic has to happen to change the status quo of private interests holding government hostage.

Strong Towns is trying to operate within our current reality, and provide an entry point to people who have only ever known car dependent infrastructure and who can't even begin to think about changing the whole system from the top down. I think it has value on that point alone. Baby steps.

whylamb,

@enobacon exactly. You can't just jump from Stroad wasteland to urbanist walkable utopia - it's incomprehensible for most people. Start at what they can understand - making streets safer for kids, build a community of active travellers (like the concept) and escalate from there. Gotta get that buy in.

part of me really wants to know if there's a good (i'm not an audiophile) record player that can plug into a computer via usb.

the other part of me is looking at that part of me like "You're an idiot who's forgotten flacs and mp3s exist".

"Hey now, records have cool art and you can "SEE" the music."

This is what it's like in my head, btw. it must be entertaining to others

whylamb,

@timelordiroh there's several made by Audio Technica that do just that but a better question is...why?

Most record players have audio out which you can convert into a 3.5mm jack and record off that if you need to.

I have a stack of records that I listen to exclusively through my record player (even though my setup sucks) and I have FLACs I listen to on the go using .

whylamb,

@timelordiroh I get the reasoning. I wouldn't do things that way myself - I would use the 3.5mm connection if anything. Maybe look into those USB turntables if you're super keen? I don't know what other features they might have, but there has got to be a reason why people keep buying 'em.

"Did any user in the world want a user tracking and ad platform baked directly into their browser? Probably not, but this is Google, and they control Chrome, and this probably still won't make people switch to Firefox."

https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2023/09/googles-widely-opposed-ad-platform-the-privacy-sandbox-launches-in-chrome/

I stick to

whylamb,

@bagder this is disgusting. The problem is now people are developing exclusively for Chrome, and some sites just straight up don't work in .

whylamb,

@bagder I saw an example on here recently of Adobe's web services not working. This is a major problem for me, I use Adobe Sign daily to send contracts etc for work.

I really wish there was some kind of open source PDF viewer / editor so I didn't have to deal with Adobe at all, but that's a separate issue.

Loved this podcast from @TheWarOnCars about the concept. Encouraging independence through and it has big potential to increase community acceptance of .

The War on Cars: Back to School with the Bike Bus

Episode webpage: http://waroncars.org/back-to-school-with-the-bike-bus

whylamb,

@Deron @TheWarOnCars I think it needs to start with kids, to be honest. Kids make connections with other kids, they might go to the same school and it gives a reason for parents to ride together. Then the network builds from there - maybe you go to the same general area to work so it makes sense to meet up and bike together. I'm not really sure but I think it's infinitely easier to start with schools.

whylamb,

@TheWarOnCars @Deron I think that's a great initiative. Would be great to see it outside of a big city though!

They've closed the A40 to everything but bus traffic this morning for the - this is what things could be like every day if we (or at least reduce their dominance). It is so nice not having constant traffic on this beautiful road, why can't we do this all the time or at least every weekend?

Another view of the A40, closed to cars. Leafy and tree lined, cones mark off the street and people run down it.

I got some JumpStart packs for my birthday this year, finally started playing a bit with them this evening with my housemate. Very worried this is something I could get hooked on, it's a lot of fun...

whylamb, to blogging

Research has continued and I think that #WriteFreely, despite being a great piece of software, isn't really accurate for my needs and is a bit too restrictive.

#Hugo might be more what I need, so I'll look at upgrading to that at some point. I just need to work out how to self host it!

#static #websites #blogging #blogs #foss

whylamb,

@reiver for me - lack of customisation, no simple way to embed images, development changes not being pushed to the FOSS version and lack of flexibility in adding new elements to the site.

I want to use a lot of media and other images. I'm not saying WriteFreely is bad but I think at the moment it's not the best choice for what I want to do.

If I was just making a text based blog I think it would be an excellent choice!

whylamb,

@reiver well...the whole purpose of the software is a distraction free blog writing environment, so I think being able to drag and drop an image would be the most elegant solution - it auto uploads and then drops inline, maybe a little menu pops up when you double click the image that allows you to right, left or centre align and add alt text.

For FOSS implementation this would store the image inside the data folders of the instance you're running.

If you wanted to embed an image from elsewhere on the web, maybe something that automatically recognises an image link and prompts you if you want to embed it or not. But I'm not sure that's so elegant.

A button I don't think would fit the design very well - it's built without toolbars normally.

Thanks for asking!
