It’s completely fine if we go past tonight and end up in september. I think we all just want a good app. Out of curiosity I think I speak for a lot of us when I ask how everything is going and if it’s coming now or if we should expect it to release one or two weeks into september? Thanks in advance my man!
I agree with the other comments that stated that you should be the change you want to see in the world…
Lemmy does need a lil bit more content now. Engage with the users. Create posts and create comments. This is the future bro. A platform hosted by the users, for the users. You are not buying a yacht for anyone by using lemmy. On reddit however… You use reddit and someone else gets to buy a new house…
Agreed. Just gotta give the place love. Pick something you care about and just talk about it.
e.g. I'm a pro wrestling guy. When the Redditpocalypse happened, a handful of the /r/SQ people came over here to kbin and made a community and just kinda...died after a week or three from lack of use cause everyone stuck with Reddit or went to the Discord.
Right now /m/SquaredCircle is the largest and most active wrestling community on lemmy/kbin (at least that I can see when searching), mostly cause A) my ass for the last few months has been posting 99% of the news and occasional highlights, and B) 1 of the new mods has been posting all the discussion threads and kicking up engagement where he can.
Afaik I’ve used ALL the lemmy apps on android. Connect is by far the best. It was kinda neck and neck with thunder and infinity for a bit, but the 1.0+ release implemented some amazing features, while still keeping the most functionality and managing to avoid the “scroll stuttering” that plagues other apps. Infinity (now eternity) is also good but account switching is more difficult and you can’t block instances or communities from theain page like you can on connect. Example fo why that’s lame - say you’re scrolling by all and theres a bunch of gay/furry/anytypeofpornyoudontwanttosee…on many apps you have to GO to that communities main page just to block it. On connect you just tap the three dots menu and pick which you want to do. Easy peasy.
How is Voyager not in your top 3? I know there are a lot of good apps and I’ve also tried “all” but for me Infinity and Eternity just had annoying bugs where the UI froze in wierd positions.
I didn’t like iPhone layout and UI which was the only option during the initial release, and never went back to it. I heard they added an android skin from another user but I haven’t found time to try it yet.
It’s really great. The Android look has been arround since the first week of Reddit mess or even earlier, feels like forever. Even if I’m waiting for Boost I’m not even sure I’ll swap to Boost when it laumches. App has to be damn good for me to trade this mouse space suit for a Rocket!
Okay, I gave it a solid six hour test drive. There’s a lot to like, but I gotta abe honest I’m still not loving it. I don’t like that the nav bar is permanently stickied to the bottom, and I can’t find a way to move it. Even on the android beta mode, I don’t like that the icons are still iPhone themed, and I wish the color theming was more pronounced. I also wish you could re-tap to blur NSFW like you can in connect/thunder/eternity (probably my favorite feature in social scrolling apps). I do like that you can block communities with a long press but in my short testing I found it to be buggy - sometimes it works and sometimes it just vibrates but nothing happens - and I wish it was just an option in the three dots menu instead.
Despite the gripes, it is very slick though and I can see why people like it. I really like the sync-esque (though much less aggressive) use of negative space between posts, and the layout has a nice subtly to it that I think looks much nicer than Connect, on par with eternity. I’ll be the first to admit that of the major apps Ive used (Thunder, Connect, Jerboa, Voyager, Eternity, sync) Connect’s post layout is bottom three, but in terms of ease of use, quick navigation, and feature density it’s my favorite, which is why I prefer it. I also like that in voyager, some lesser used options are a little shrunk/out of the way (like post sorting). It can be harder to find at first but options you won’t touch often should be less pronounced IMO, and voyager does that really well. I didn’t get any push notifications so I can’t weigh on on how well that stuff works. Also the icon choices are FUCKING SWEET. I legit might steal one to use on my homepage.
I’m also waiting for boost! Really hoping they haven’t abandoned ship on it, feels like they might’ve given up. That last UI update for boost before the shutoff was SO DOPE, and it always was my favorite Reddit App. Honestly I think I like connect because it’s the most like boost. Nowhere near as polished, but almost every UI/interactive option is in the same spot or executed the same as it was on boost, so it feels the most intuitive to me.
Nice writeup! Glad you liked it even tho it won’t be your daily driver. Post layout is the most important to me and that’s why I dig Voyager a lot. Not much comes close. Also I can’t stand small jitter when scrolling and I have that on most other apps except Sync, but I can’t use that app with the (imo) horrible monetization choices. Let’s all hope Boost does a lot right when the Rocket actually arrives!
You can block like this with a long press in Thunder! There’s been a pause in nightly releases but a lot of good updates coming for it in the near future :) feature and performance wise!
Nice! I feel like I’d read somewhere that they added it but I haven’t used Thunder in weeks now, connect has become my #1 daily driver and sometimes I check on eternity when it updates. I should try to give thunder some love though, not was my #1 for a while when connect was still a little jank/less polished.
What’s your thoughts on Voyager? It was my first favourite app, then Sync launched and I abandoned it for a while but even if I’m using the free version I can’t get over the monetization so now I’m back on Voyager and wonder why I ever left. I tried Thunder, Connect and Infinity recently as well but they all had bugs that I couldn’t get over.
Honestly didn’t give voyager much of a shot. I didn’t like how the UI was like an iPhone app, and I kept getting confused by it (because I’m a non-Phone user). I wasn’t into wefwef for the same reason, but they both seemed solid enough.
Definitely check it out again, I love it <3 I really love the compact mode, it’s very clean. Sounds like there will be an updated nightly in the next few days, too! I’m going to go check out connect again :)
I really like how Lemmy is just becoming Reddit 2.0 at this rate.
I just feel like if y’all really want stuff like r/place and other Reddit-specific stuff… then just fuckin stay on Reddit. People kept finding excuses to keep engaging with Reddit anyways during r/place and I wouldn’t be surprised if they still were doing that now.
We want reddit but we don’t want reddit practices of screwing over the indie devs. I don’t care about the shithousery and dumb opinions and things that people like in very small niches. It’s what makes a community.
Or, we could just let people have fun with things they like and ignore those things if we aren’t into them. I’m not into badminton, as a result, I don’t click on badminton posts.
This sounds insane on so many levels. You mean you don’t actively search for stuff you don’t like just to tell the people around that you don’t like it? Madness.
Yeah they’re all really good and improving quickly. People are comparing mature stable reddit apps to alpha lemmy apps. Boost and sync will be buggy at the beginning and will get better.
… and Wefwef updates are fast and constantly improving what is already very good. I’ve tried Memmy, but Wefwef is my favourite with some recent fixes of glitches in the matrix.
I’m using it currently and don’t know how to get a link, but I searched posts for wefwef vayager and found a pinned post in the wefwef community pretty easily.
Yeah if I were one of these devs and saw this thread I'd be pretty disheartened. It's been like 4 weeks or so and people seem to expect a boost / sync / baconreader experience for a platform that for the majority is brand new.
It was easier for me to leave once I said fuck it and just deleted my account.
It’s also easier accepting that Reddit just won’t be the same ever again no matter what. Shit is changing. It had already been slowly changing over the years as it became more popular. Quality of content has been declining for a while.
It used to just get a little shitty in the summer when kids were on summer break, but as it became more popular the seasonal change became less noticeable.
Now every thread on Reddit always has some dork talking about how “wE aRe NOw in thE FinD ouT pHasE” (or some variation of “fuck around, find out) like they are saying something original or clever.
Anyone with a ten year or older account has seen the decline of Reddit and hopefully has moved on now. My account was 12 years old, I deleted my content and was still lurking on boost until it stopped working now. When I get time and the motivation I will logon and delete my account. It is refreshing to try something new and I am enjoying Lemmy world a lot so far. With boost for Lemmy coming the future looks good.
I have an 17+ year old Reddit account that I started just a few months after reddit offered accounts. I’ve seen it grow, seen things turn sideways in many ways. But, things come and go, and perhaps it’s Reddits time to wither and die.
I came to Reddit after Digg turned in a clusterfark , so I am glad there is a new site that seems to be more in touch with what users want. I just hope it can be maintained and made profitable for those who devote the effort on it.
The irony of people still on reddit saying stuff like “Reddit is in the find out phase” while being on reddit. Like… You are litterally proving them they can do whatever they want and you will still be a good dog and be there for them. People are so fking addicted to this site. I was, but just like you I just said fuck it and purged my accounts. My life is better now even though I kind of miss some smaller communities, but the reddit people coming here is very obvious seeing some comments having completely out of touch opinions and bad repeated jokes
Things like this is why I try not to get too invested in products or companies. They will betray you at some point. I don’t use one device ecosystem, and even though I was addicted to reddit I made sure not to be dependent on it, and it makes switching so much easier. For example, if I bought a Mac computer, I would never get an iPhone to go with it, simply for the fact that it would lock me in a stupid ecosystem
There’s a slight barrier to entry here that makes it not as accessible for a certain crowd. That may change over time, especially with Threads introducing them to the fediverse. I suppose we’ll see.
The issue was never that it’d stop working completely. Instead, the API would limit the app once a certain number of requests happened, and charge for more. Since a lot of people use the app, there’s a lot of requests, and it stops working quickly unless the developer pays.
Now that the app has been pulled from the market and it broke for everyone, it sees very little use. The limit doesn’t get hit, and the app works. But if everyone starts using it again, it’ll break again.
Edit: Just for kicks, I downloaded it from apkmirror and tried it. I very quickly got the 429 error when the API key has hit the limit.
