What is the best fediverse platform to make internet friends ?

I am asking because all my real life friends have a fuck ton of internet friends on instagram, snapchat .etc and i’d rather not have any internet friend if it means joining those. I tried matrix so no need to reccommend it i thought it was severly underpolished and a graveyard and it made me appreciate the work lemmy devs have put in . So reccomend away also +1 point if it has an app on fdroid.

Just a shoutout to @Stamets who thinks everyone natively speaks english and someone who isn’t speaking it fluently is an idiot.

It kind of depends on your interests and where other people with those interests hang out, tbh.

Like another commenter, I’ve had great success on Mastodon and met some brilliant people, some of whom I now have on Discord and etc and chat with regularly, one of whom I met up with irl last year by accident and another I’m planning to meet with later this year on purpose! But that’s because my two main interests, crafting and gamedev, are both well-served there, so it makes sense.

I’ve also met a few people here on Lemmy, when you post a lot about the same things you start to recognise each other and get more familiar and then one will take the plunge and DM the other and the rest is history, kind of thing.

So maybe if you give us a clue what kind of people you’re trying to meet we can point you in the right direction? :)

People who study forensic psychology don’t misuse personality disorders and generally they have the ability to spell.

You’ve done infinitely more damage to yourself than I possibly could have. But sure.

  1. You don’t study forensic psychology or criminal behavior. You have a passing interest in it and are claiming you study it but at most? You have a wikipedia level of understanding. Maybe a Grade D High school understanding.
  2. You have no formal training in this field at all as you have repeatedly misused terminology of the field.
  3. You’re probably a teenager given the insane amount of spelling and grammatical mistakes littered throughout this area.
  4. Hilariously, you do exhibit a surprising amount of narcissistic tendencies. You get angry when people point out your mistakes, you repeatedly lash out in multiple comments instead of one because you’re riding an emotional wave, you repeatedly lie, you try to frame reality in such a way that you can bolster yourself, and you go on extreme emotional attacks when someone refutes you.
  5. You’re not worth my time. Or anyones in this thread. You are just a photocopy. I’ve got better things to do than waste my time on such a low resolution imitation of a troll.

I’ve never really looked into the more academic side of Mastodon but I know it exists, brief search brought up this list that might be worth a browse find.sciences.social/search?field=psychology

If you do find someone posting interesting toots, you can then check out their boosts and the people interacting in their comments and follow the hashtags they use and before you know it bam, you’ve got yourself a home feed.

Yep that’s me, I have two YT channels and a generally quite open internet presence so doesn’t bother me. But I’m still selective about what to share, for obvious reasons! There’s a line.

That’s just me though, most people on Mastodon are LARPing as cats so anything goes really!

Mastodon is pretty good. There are a lot of servers dedicated to a specific topic or vibe and you can meet a lot of similarly minded people there. I use tenforward.social

Well if you’re going to boil down the experience then yeah. It is like Lemmy but so is the entirety of social media. You interact and then go on your way. Saying they’re basically the same is kind of nonsensical though. It’s like saying Twitter and reddit are the same. As for not liking Star Trek or Star Wars, okay. I said which one I used, I didn’t suggest it. Didn’t even mention Star Wars either. I used it as an example of an instance that is dedicated to a specific topic.

I don’t think your problem is going to be finding a place to make friends as much as just making the friends.

Your immediate reaction to a suggestion was dismissal. When someone then clarified you verbally shrugged and seem totally disinterested. That kind of behavior isn’t something people typically want to be around.

You don’t have to worry about me being friends with you. I have standards. People who immediately dismiss everything around them, won’t try anything new, want things to magically happen but don’t want to try working for them? Not people I like spending my time around.

But here’s a tip. If you want to make friends then I highly recommend stop being so dismissive and non caring to people who actually show interest.

dunno.. how much can you consider a person a friend if you only interact with them on a very specific platforms in very specific ways. seems weird to me.

i grew up on the old BBSs which were tiny, local online services where we would do the same.. but those friends would randomly also just show up at your house, or we would have local events where everyone on the system (friend or not) would just show up at a specified pizza joint.

i havent been able to make 'friends' for decades.

if you only think of friends as people you interact with in real life doing things in the real world then i guess yeah for you that wouldn’t fit your definition of friend

personally i think of friends as people whose company i enjoy, who i get along with really well, have a lot of things in common with, and talk with frequently about whatever we have going on in our lives or things that we like or find interesting. i’ve had many long-lasting, long-distance friendships with people online who i cherish very much, and i’m even in a long-term relationship that started online, and we lived on opposite coasts of the US, and i moved in with him after about a year. in terms of doing things together, for me it’s mostly just chatting and playing video games, but i’ve met some of the people i’ve met online in real life before, as we make plans to get together sometimes when possible.

but i have agoraphobia so socializing irl can be difficult for me because i don’t really get out of my house much, so online friends is usually my only option, so i might be a special case idk for sure. but i’d guess that a lot of people have similar experiences with online friendships
