I am working a talk for DORS/CLUC in Zagreb about .

My topic is how and why to start contributing to as a total beginner. I'll be showcasing tools such as @streetcomplete , @everydoor, @MapComplete.

I'll be also talking about , , helping projects like and .

Do you have any tricks or ideas you would like me to include into the talk. How would you encourage a total stranger to start contributing?

@bogo @streetcomplete @everydoor @MapComplete Focusing on specific niches and hobbies is a nice way!

You're vegetarian? Here are a few projects showing you local vegetarian restaurants. And by the way here is how you can use e.g. StreetComplete to add missing ones.

You like rowing and kayaking? Here are a few projects you can use to plan your upcoming trips. And by the way here is how you can use e.g. iD to add missing waterways.

I noticed this works really really well with the Muggles 🧙‍♀️✨

@djh @streetcomplete @everydoor @MapComplete thanks fir sharing. I think that's a good approach as well and will use it. I have some examples already.

@bogo Maybe try to hit a personal emotional point. IMHO users start to contribute if there isn't their fav caffee, restaurant, shortcut way, or if they see, that their neighbourhood isn't that well maped compared to the other districts. How about showing whats possible with micromapping? ;-)

@blub good advice. I'll use this. Will give you credit, of course.

@bogo Ooh, nice! You can get some inspiration from my (@pietervdvn) introductory talk at State of the map, a few years ago: https://pietervdvn.duckdns.org/sharing/CVVYIALV3

One of the most important slides IMHO is the 'Pareto frontier' which graphs 'easy of use' vs 'number of features'.

Another important thing is the difference between @MapComplete and @streetcomplete : the latter is meant only for adding data, whereas is meant for both consuming and contributing data.

MapComplete,
@MapComplete@en.osm.town avatar

@bogo And even more important: MapComplete is a collection of different, thematic map. Each map is aimed towards their own community (e.g. cyclists have https://mapcomplete.org/cyclofix, parents have the https://mapcomplete.org/playground map, sport people have a https://mapcomplete.org/sport_pitches map, outdoor lovers have https://mapcomplete.org/nature, emergency services loved https://mapcomplete.org/aed)

As such, it unbundles OSM into easier-to-use chunks and sidesteps some complexity

MapComplete,

@bogo Also, we are currently not planning on adding . @streetcomplete tried this, but they said it didn't have much effect and it might disalign the incentives (from mapping for the greater good to adding bogus data for the streak - even though I'm not aware of such cases)

@MapComplete @streetcomplete I was thinking more about making the mapping a game experience.

@MapComplete @pietervdvn @streetcomplete I will take a look. Thanks 😊
