With the smoke in this weekend, I pulled the air purifiers up from the basement.

Does anyone know how the filters work for these? As in is there some sort of standard or does each manufacturer make unique?

I have a couple of Instant (as in Instant Pot) brand filters and they work well. But filters seem to be stupid expensive: 55CAD per filter. I think the original purifier was only 80CAD.

There similar looking/sized filters for half the price, but not sure if they'll work.

@linux_mclinuxface If it's just foam and charcoal, you can buy huge quantities for next to nothing.

@tripplehelix it’s a folded paper deal.

@linux_mclinuxface Do you have a link to the ones that go in your machine?

@linux_mclinuxface Well the pre-filter is obviously easily purchasable, if you're able to take it apart.

If the carbon part is hard, then I doubt you'd be able to replace it. But if you leave it out in the sunlight, it'll reactivate it and last longer.

I'm guessing the HEPA filter is the largest cost, you'll need to search around for that.

@tripplehelix the HEPA part is the paper?

Humm. I wonder if I could 3d print the plastic bits and get buy the rest of the stuff.

@linux_mclinuxface just be sure the charcoal sheet is activated charcoal or it'll do nothing.

@tripplehelix yeah, i may need to do some research.

It’s pretty nuts that it costs that much. It really seems like it’s only a few bucks worth of materials, but like so many things it’s not the material cost…

@linux_mclinuxface I'd say 3d print! Obviously there are going to be things you need to keep in mind with the materials used, but it's definitely doable if a 2-minute search can find everything for the filter.

UK links obviously, but yes, it's all cheap and accessible. I'm sure you could go cheaper if you find a manufacturer and not Amazon.

I went through the same ordeal with fish tank filters, like £20 for a tiny bit of mesh, or you can buy a MASSIVE sheet for £1

@tripplehelix super helpful!

@linux_mclinuxface Makes me want to build my own air filter with these materials and a spare fan....

@tripplehelix me too!

As long as you have a pm2.5 meter, should be easy to test efficacy
