Hi all and welcome to kbin and m/ethfinance, our temporary-and-maybe-someday-more home while reddit learns its lesson.
I didn't get a chance to reply to everyone in the previous thread, but I did read. Please feel free to ask me any questions about kbin, Lemmy, the fediverse, and I'll try to answer. I've spent quite a few days now exploring it. I also encourage fediverse users to chime in, whether it's from Mastodon experience or somewhere else.
The dev (@ernest) is lovely, responsive, and working hard right now. Feel free to chip in with suggestions at m/kbinmeta or if you have web dev experience, maybe consider reaching out directly to help.
No doubt you're all noticing kbin is slow. It's good to remember that the beauty of federated (decentralized) servers is also in the initial brutality. Servers can be run by anyone (great!) but servers must be run by someone (oof). Ernest is one guy, spinning up a server for refugees of a global conglomerate. It's partly why I tried -- and will keep trying -- to open a server of our own.
I'd encourage everyone to have a little patience, be extra kind and gracious, and at worst, take a little time away from the screen if it's crawling. They're planning a large infrastructure change next week. In the meantime, try to enjoy the brave new world here. We haven't had a truly "new" website to explore in many years. It's kinda exciting!
Thanks. Definitely tech skills. Don't need funding anytime soon. I'm extremely tech savvy and have a homelab, but never attempted anything remotely like a kbin server before. I basically crunched an entire server admin course into 3 days to try and get something up and running for us.
Anyway, the only way to register and login currently is Google OAuth, which isn't great for a DeSo website. I also got my Github OAuth key running but... there's no button. I'm unable to get the kbin instance to talk to my SMTP server, which is just a namshi container. So, people were signing up -- and I can see them -- but they're all "inactive" and unverified because no emails are going out.
Perhaps most importantly, I'd be happy to turn off email verification and just let people sign up freely. I just don't know how to do it.
If you've got the skills, I'd see if you can grab the repo from codeberg/kbin and parse through the symfony compose and ENV files. You'll have to explain the solutions to a dumb dumb like me, but I'd greatly appreciate it.
Yo! I also have a non-ETH question, soz. I’m another newbie to kbin, lemmy, fediverse, the whole thing.
I noticed this post, and one for cs, were "pinned" to my subscriptions feed, despite not being subscribed to these subreddits.. ahem, magazines. Is this a "feature" or am I doing something wrong?
Having posts (or is it threads? I am so confused by all this new terminology) from magazines I’m not subbed to appearing in my subscriptions feed is not exactly something I want. If I want to find stuff I’m not subbed to, I’d check the r/all-equivalent page, right? That’s at least how I’d assume most people want it.
Having topics I’m not exactly interested in (no offense) like crypto and counterstrike shoved in my face isn’t a good first taste of the platform IMO. Or are they just pinned for everyone because they’re directly relevant to the Reddit exodus situation?
Probably not replying to the right person here, but thought it fitting since you seem to be in contact with the dev and this thread (post?) is relevant to my question.
Yo! Yes, threads here are either "articles" (on reddit would be a text post), links, and photos. On kbin, a "post" is essentially a tweet. Those are viewable in the Microblog tab.
I too have our daily and the cs at the top of the homepage. While it's possible there's enough activity her to place us at the top, I can't imagine it'll stay that way for long. I would anticipate all of these UI quirks being addressed over the coming days and weeks. I agree it's not ideal. The dev is working around the clock and could even be breaking things as he works.
In the meantime, I'd check out various Magazines and see what interests you can find established here. Hopefully the communities here are chill as they gear up.
I figured it out! Despite setting subscription as my home page in the settings, it seems clicking the home button still took me to the r/all-equivalent. On mobile, you have to use the filter button to filter to only subscribed to see only the magazines you’re actively subscribed to. Hopefully that’s a bug that’s fixed at some point :)
Thanks @kbrot for setting us up with the magazine (will take a while to get used to this title) and 100x thanks to @ernest for making kbin in the first place!
Yes, the server is slow and there are things that could be improved, but everyone can help making this great:
Thank you, kbrot, for sheltering us here while Reddit goes all evil corp on us. Or do I need to write /u/kbrot to ping you?
I have a couple of unimportant and non-ETH related questions -
How do I set up a profile picture? I went to “Profile” but I don’t see where to set it up (on mobile if that matters).
I turned on “Infinite scrolling” in the Settings but the daily still paginates at the bottom (i.e., I have to click on the next page number). How do I change that?
It’s weird feeling like a helpless newb all over again.
It's all the dev's hard work for now. I just made the magazine for us.
You should be able to @ me. Testing this @anon (what a username to claim!)
Settings > Profile > Avatar for the pic
Not sure, I haven't toyed with infinite scroll yet. (Didn't want to push the servers any harder than necessary for now.) It could be a UI bug that needs multiple refreshes or even a log out/in?
literally won't upload for me. Tried with all addons turned off (which is how I had to register) and even on Edge. I just don't get to have one it seems.
Does anyone experience a broken UX of kbin on Chrome iOS? The thread keeps jumping up and down as I try to navigate, the comment box doesn’t stay in focus as I type, etc.
edit: seems to be much smoother on Safari iOS. We’re still a long way from the silky smoothness of Apollo, which I will miss dearly!
you can also try making an account on a lemmy instance, then using a lemmy app (memmy on iOS I guess?)
edit: I’m giving “connect for lemmy” a try now while I wait for Sync to release a version. Getting used to a new UI and/or setting it up to your preferences is always a bit of a struggle, but so far it seems plenty good enough for a bit of literal shitposting
edit: also just try the main page of your instance, installed as a PWA on your phone. It actually works really well
If you're enjoying kbin, you'll want to keep an eye on Artemis - spiritual successor to Apollo based on kbin.
If you're okay browsing via lemmy, there's Mlem on iOS and Memmy via TestFlight. Official reddit apps Boost and Sync are also both switching to the fediverse, Lemmy first.
Checking in after my post about taking the plunge the other day. Spun up my validator and deposited. Took me, in total, about 10 hours (yes, really). I'm "Pending" on beaconcha.in.
I wrote down a lot of what I felt and did while trying to get it all together. I'm still kind of shell-shocked by the whole experience and I'm sure I'll talk a lot more about it later. What I'll say for now is that even the "for dummies" version of setting up a validator is significantly more intimidating and intense than most people think it is.
I'm proud of myself for (hopefully) successfully doing it, but even doing it on easy mode (dappnode) had a lot of issues, things that I didn't fully understand, or things that almost had me giving up (I gave up about 3 times and then went right back to it after 5 minutes of having given up).
To be absolutely clear, that's no one's fault but mine. I'm absolutely tech illiterate, but, sadly, I'm actually probably more tech-y than most people. So I do think we have a long way to go before this sort of thing becomes something non-tech can just pick up and do. Things that I think most here take for granted are very scary or even indecipherable to someone like me.
That actually brings me to something that this whole reddit fiasco has me thinking about. One of the great strengths of crypto and eth in particular is the layer 0 stuff. It leads to great communities like this or Ethstaker. We have Reddits and Discords which are filled with people willing and eager to help. The problem is that it seems like it may have led to less focus on delivering a user-manual that makes sense to a new user who has no idea what they're doing. Communities are great for fixing problems, but it seems like we rely on a nebulous social network to teach the basics. Even the best guides I found seemed to assume a lot of knowledge and I generally had 3-5 "1 stop shop" guides open at once as I did this.
The good thing with how tough it was was that, if everything works out and I start validating in a month and a half (thanks Celsius), I'll really feel like I earned it.
Hey, are you on Discord? EthStaker is compiling a bunch of resources to put together a comprehensive staking guide and would love to go into more detail about your experience
I have a discord account, but I've only used it a few times to play games with friends. Discord itself feels fairly overwhelming to explore, but I'd be happy to talk with someone on there to give my experience sometime.
Thanks! I think we'll get there, but I've always felt like we as a community downplay how difficult this stuff is to navigate given the state of most UIs in the ecosystem.
It's kind of hard to explain, and probably part of why I struggled so much is I felt like I couldn't articulate what I was struggling with. Some of it was super basic and I felt like an idiot once I realized it. A lot of it was probably right in the middle of the front page, but somehow I missed it. It took me far too long to realize that DAppNode was really a server that I had to connect to through another computer. I had a bunch of errors that I had to solve by looking through Google. There was an error when using the Terminal in Ubuntu to install it. Every time I used the script, it had an error and erased my wifi. I had to re-install the whole OS three times and that set the discouraging tone for the rest of the day. I ended up using the ISO method which I didn't realize was a viable option until I read way further in the tutorial. The system also asked for login credentials that I didn't have once I set it up. Turns out it was login: dappnode and pw: dappnode.s0 but I had to do a lot of looking to find that on the tech support boards.
Otherwise, I often felt like I had to do a ton of research to even know what I'm looking at on screen. That, on it's own, isn't that big of a deal, but it can be a real struggle when the system UI is constantly updated so the guides often don't look like what I'm seeing. I remember once someone on reddit commenting (on a totally unrelated issue) "Why do I have to follow this company on Twitter to learn about a new security issue" or something like that. That's kind of what I mean by the strength and weakness of our communities. A lot of crypto companies do so much through these social media companies, but it feels very strange to me. I think I kinda feel that way about going to Reddit, Discord, or other social media to learn how to use something.
Finally, and this might simply be way too much to ask, but I think having more of an internal guide would be extremely helpful. Like, in old video games you read the manual and then you played the game. Now we have walk-through tutorials that are imbedded in the game itself.
I'll admit, I feel like a total tool even complaining about any of this though. They provided this free service and, thanks to their work, I actually have a shot of pulling this off. I'm extremely grateful and I feel like most of my complaints are probably things I just missed.
I thought today (July 5) might be the day we break $2K, but we didn’t and we seem to be receding right now.
Which leads me to ask, having lost sight of the /r/ethfinance pulse:
What’s this community’s sentiment with regard to the next few months? Are we still stuck in a foreseeably long bear? Are we at the cusp of a crypto spring? Are there trigger points (such as the Blackrock ETF’s approval, or the XRP verdict) that you think must happen before this is even decidable?
spez: thank you for the replies. I love that among four replies, one says surge up, one says crab sideways, and one says drop back down to the local low.
Spring/bull is imminent IMO. Price action seems to support it. I am not saying that we won't get another major leg down, but I think we have bottomed for now. We can range here until most people reach apathy (I'm mostly here) and then slowly surge upwards (I think we're near here)
If I'm remembering right, @kbrot believes the Nasdaq is likely to correct around 10% in the next few months following its huge gains in the first half of the year, and eth could retest $1400 or lower around October.
Echoing @laughingmime... it's gotta come with volume. There's just nothing there right now. It can be a pump or a dump, but something's gotta give. No one outside the holders cares about crypto right now sadly. It'll return though. It always does.
I'll go where my friends (and content) go. Kbin and Lemmy are both very satisfying so far. As for Discord, I don't know if people are mad enough yet to bother. One civil war at a time. Otherwise, I've got my eyes on both Revolt and Comm in the future.
I find it oddly endearing, that just by having some of the people coming in here from etfhinance reddit, makes kbin that was initially so foreign feel so familliar. If only all the third party apps move here...
Like many others here, I’ve nuked 10+ years of Reddit posts and comments. I have not deleted my account, however, as I worry about Reddit resuscitating my posts against my will, as has happened to others.
I feel genuine sadness at turning the Reddit page, and removing Apollo from my device. I’ve learned a lot from Reddit, including much of what I know now about crypto. On the upside, I will take this as an opportunity to improve my daily habits by spending less time mindlessly doomscrolling, and being more cautious about the risk of doxxing. My contributions to the fediverse will also be more deliberate, meaningful, and targeted. And, I snatched a prized username!
Polygon proposal released today to migrate it’s PoS chain to a zkEVM. This means $2 billion in assets, millions of users, tons of apps and more apps to come will now be secured by Ethereum.
This is huge. And kudos to the Polygon team for following through. I remember there being doubts that they’d actually stay Ethereum-centric and they’re definitely doing that here.
This is very good news. Polygon team keeps on delivering, and doing it in right order. My bet is, they'll have two trustless rollups before Optimism decentralizes.
I know everyone is favorable to kbin but I think there's still some questions that need to be answered, such as hosted vs self-hosted, how mirroring works, and issues with impersonation.
Happy to keep using kbin, but I think we need a longer discussion of where we want to community to be based. Personally the value I get from The Daily community is more important than where it is located. Hopefully over the next few weeks we can continue the transition from Reddit, but not if doing so means we splinter EthFinance.
he proposes leaving the original subreddit public but in restricted mode, then using a bot to relay all posts from the real community back to reddit. That way it's still discoverable from people used to going to reddit.com/r/ethfinance, but if they want to participate they'll have to join kbin.social or wherever we end up
a well programmed bot won't have to make many API calls to do this. Heck, if need be I could cobble something together that forgoes all APIs and just scrapes the reddit website. Hardest part of that would be dodging the captchas
Agreed a longer discussion is needed. I'm still putting together a comparison of about 10 alternatives. There's a number of things that kbin doesn't have, such as a mobile app, which is what people didn't like about other options. So if people no longer actually care about that then there's other options that should be considered as well. Same goes for the mod tools since kbin doesn't have any.
Give it time. I didn't even know about kbin until today because the ethfinance sub was back up. I think most everyone involved with Ethereum wants to use / support decentralized alternatives when possible. Just gotta spread the word that there are even alternatives!
Nope, I for one nuked my ten-year-old Reddit account. The API fiasco has actually had a silver lining for me. Not only would I refuse to browse through Reddit's official channels (which are algorithmic advertising platforms disguised as community engagement platforms) instead of user-oriented third-party apps such as Apollo, but ditching Reddit has made me realize just how much time I was mindlessly wasting doomscrolling (outside of the /r/EthFinance daily). I still have the muscle memory urge to idly open Apollo on my phone, it's weird but I'm detoxing slowly.
So I'm happy to move over to kbin for now. Its UX is far less addictive, its content is more narrowly targeted, and I visit less frequently but with more intentionality.
Ditching Reddit has been a net positive for my mental health so far and I would encourage others to consider it too.
It's going to take some time for people to migrate.
I get a lot of value from my Reddit browsing, but like others I find myself getting sucked into spending too much time mindlessly browsing rather than actively contributing.
For me, once Apollo goes offline my engagement with Reddit will drop off a cliff. I've already deleted several old accounts and this one is more for continuity. I'd like to see a few more subreddits find there way over here.
One approach would be to have a signature that essentially says "I'm posting more on KBin than Reddit these days, find me on https://kbin.social/m/ethfinance" so that people have a continuous easy migration reminder. However, some automods may just start shadow banning people for this type of content.
An incredibly simple example of how to mislead by omission...
A Tweet by Stuart Alderoty, Chief Legal Officer at Ripple.
10/ On June 4, Hinman wrote that he didn’t see a “need to regulate ETH as a security” and would call Buterin later that week to confirm “our understanding.”
Emphasis is added by me, because that section is one of the things causing the XRP bagholders to tweet about '#ETHGate'.
It is clearly written to imply a shady agreement between Hinman and Buterin. However, in context the quote from the e-mail reads:
We also have a call with Buterin later this week to confirm our understanding of how the Ethereum Foundation operates.
So what this bellend is insinuating indicates some dodgy deal, is actually just a reference to a call checking some information.
I really do hate the way spreading disinfo is seen as a perfectly acceptable tactic by assholes to get what they want. If you don't strive for truth then you do not deserve to have people listen to you, but so many people don't really want truth, they just want feel special for knowing about a conspiracy and to believe things that will pump their bags.
The queue is still going strong! Where is all this fresh ETH coming from?
Unfortunately I don't have the fancy math or data sources to give an update on when the churn limit will increase to 10/epoch, but IIRC it will happen within the next few weeks.
The hacker is a NYC-based “senior security engineer at an international technology company” with expertise in blockchain and smart contract security audits. Looking up his name returns a senior security engineer working at Amazon in NYC. He is facing up to two 20-year sentences.
Oh, and he was arrested by Homeland Security special agent Chad.
