Hey users: I’ve got a recurring issue on my laptop recently where I try to log into my banking website, use the 2FA with my phone, but when I verify access with my phone, it still doesn’t let me into the website.

If I hit I Didn’t Receive A Notification on the website to prompt a second attempt at getting in, it gives me a “technical error” notification and says to try again later.

I cleared cache & cookies and it still happens.

I contacted their help desk and the guy suggested

igorlogius,

@reay

A good first step is always to create a second new profile beside your existing one (via about:profiles for example) and try if you can login with that new unmodified profile.

@igorlogius Not sure how to make a second profile on a banking site. Whether using name or credit card or debit card, etc., that’s already in the established profile.

igorlogius,

@reay

You misunderstand ... you can create profiles in your browsers.

@igorlogius Ah! I may give that a shot. Thanks.

… trying a different browser. I downloaded Edge and tried to get into the banking site with it, and after the 2FA permission, it let me in no problem.

Just like Firefox did up to a few weeks ago.

The help desk guy suggested uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox. But that’s a pain, plus it’s running with the most recent update, so is that actually a step that would help?

Any other suggestions for what to try before that?

I’m on a Windows 10 laptop, if that sheds any light on the issue.

@reay Just a thought: maybe they've got you making a request directly to someone like Twilio to initiate that 2FA code and that url is being blocked?

reay,
@reay@mastodon.social avatar

@nyquildotorg Could be. But would that have changed behaviour in the last few weeks? And is there anything I can do to work around it?

The guy suggested I could alternately use a different browser for just my banking, but the chances of me doing that is something less than 0%.

@nyquildotorg@mastodon.social avatar

@reay In my case, I use extensions that subscribe to user-submitted block lists. Sometimes someone will add a block to a list and then my extension picks it up.

bnlandor,

@nyquildotorg @reay On a related note, expired or otherwise invalid certificates might be treated differently.

@bnlandor @nyquildotorg An interesting point. Could I do anything about that?

reay,
@reay@mastodon.social avatar

@bnlandor @nyquildotorg If it’s of any help, I’m just now recalling that starting recently (about as recently, I think) I also can’t get into a different banking site from the same laptop and browser.

Is there anything that would alter a browser’s ability to be able to get into multiple instances of the same category of website (like, banking)?

I haven’t tried the second bank with Edge, but I imagine it would probably work with it.

nyquildotorg,
@nyquildotorg@mastodon.social avatar

@reay @bnlandor This seems unlikely, but one big difference between Firefox and the other browsers is that Firefox uses CloudFlare to do DNS-over-HTTPS. Maybe CloudFlare is not handing the request properly...

reay,
@reay@mastodon.social avatar

@nyquildotorg @bnlandor All right. Problems resolved.
The updated Firefox lets me access one bank site that was giving me problems, and it just so happened that the other bank site I was having issues with was because I had an outdated URL bookmarked.

Evidently it's a bridge too far for a multi-billion dollar company to have an error message as nuanced as, "You're using an outdated URL portal. Please reconnect through the newer website."

Nope. Generic "technical issues" page. 👍 🙄

GAH.

@nyquildotorg @bnlandor Thanks for the feedback and help!

@nyquildotorg @bnlandor So an update: In checking what version of Firefox I was runing, there was an update option for it (strange, as auto updates are on and it has always let me know when a new update was ready and prompting me to restart to install it).

I did that installation, et voila... my banking now works.

Which now leads me to ask: Any idea why one version of Firefox would work for online banking, then I guess a recent update wouldn't work, then another one would again?

@nyquildotorg@mastodon.social avatar

@reay Do you know how to use Firefox's developer tools? I'd be curious to see what the Neteork tab looks like when you hit "didn't receive a notification"

reay,
@reay@mastodon.social avatar

@nyquildotorg No clue how to use the developer tools, sadly.

@reay Just for kicks, what happens if you open whatever Firefox calls a private/incognito window and try logging in there?
