Popped an issue in the issue tracker for it. I think it should be default to be hidden, especially with the fact that most people coming from reddit would expect the same.
I definitely think it should be hidden by default. I wouldn't have even guessed these were public and I think most others wouldn't either. It looks like somebody is already working on it, at least (and the raw code does confirm they're visible by default)
I don't think it does by default. In settings there's an option to show your subscriptions and followings under "Privacy" and mine are unchecked, but I didn't do anything to them, they were like that when I found them.
