It's okay to stay small

Hello everyone. I hope you're doing well today.

I'm writing this to you on a website, kbin.social, that's been painfully slow for the past a couple of days. I just want to put my thoughts out there, even though I'm doubtful that many of you will see it. And that's okay!

You see, I'm of the opinion that we don't need another reddit, a 1:1 replacement and I don't think there ever will be. We are too used to our websites being capable of serving to billions of people. And I think that era is long gone.

Our internet has been poisoned by the promise of reach and the dopamine hits of engagement. We are only human, we've gotten adapted to it. Everything had to be shared and heard immediately.

I think we should take a step back and appreciate how small this website is. It's not the prettiest or fastest with a massive reach. It's just a small corner of the web, but full of potential.

A potential to tame our need for a stream of information. It's stressful being in this constant urgency. It's not good for us. I honestly need we should slow the fuck down.

And, perhaps, embrace staying small.

Imagine a community that doesn't need to weed out rule-breaking posts, low-effort trolls, and illegal content in real-time. Even the thought of it is exhausting to me.

Instead, we can focus on building what we care about, slowly. People will come: Just start that 'zine, you can set the rules later, it doesn't have to be perfect immediately.

Thanks for reading.

Thank you for reminding me to take a deep breath and enjoy the users behind the content :)

The beat subreddits were the smaller ones with passionate members. Too big and you get chaos, trolls, too much shitposting, low quality, etc. Too small and there's little content.

So I agree 100%. Hoping for some growth so that we get more content and build a more functioning community, but I don't need and don't want the giganticness of reddit. Even though there's not much content yet and things are still getting started, I'm really loving the cozy feeling.

Absolutely. I found myself getting so caught up trying to subscribe to a million different magazines and fill my homepage with content. Thanks for posting this.

For what it's worth, right now is lightning fast here in Italy. Regular cable connection.

Agreed, quality over quantity.

That part is applicable to my life as a whole right now and I appreciate the reminder. I agree with everything you've said and appreciate you taking the time to write this out. Thank you.
