I started using nothing but that resource in January and it’s blown my mind how quickly I am learning compared to a year of studying and grammar rules and constant translation tests.
Personally I’ve found DuoLingo does a good job. No language learning software will take you all the way though, you need to read and listen to that languages literature and TV as well. Basically immersing yourself in it is the best way, and if you don’t use it you’ll lose it.
Agreed - Duo has been helpful for practice to keep up on structures / vocab. Good time killer, too.
Piggybacking on the immersion front, I recommend finding as much French language media - music, movies, TV, games - as you can. All of my ESL friends say that’s the main way they learned English.
I love learning languages, and I tried to learn some exotic or mysterious ones. Not those big ones like German or French, but those small ones like Mongolian or Tamil.
It's sad that some languages don't have so much resources to learn them.
Recently I tried to learn Chinese, but it's very difficult because of hanzi. Maybe I'll try with Ukrainian.
Learning a language in the very language you're trying to learn seems enjoyable, but at the beginning it also seems discouraging because you can't understand anything.
But I think I've more channels over here (although some videos are not actual teachings):
Starting with a anti-suggestion, but from my experience, avoid Duolinguo. It was too stressful, being more of an ad for a subscription service that feels as if it belittles you for not paying, as well as having some odd (if not straight up wrong) lessons.
And not a learning software per se, but I'd suggest trying to read stuff like comics, books and news, as well as listening to materials, for the language you're trying to learn. Plenty can be found digitally, and potentially without geoblocks.
