shellsharks,

Wrote a “guide” to / last year after Reddit went full enshittify.

If you’re interested in checking out a -based alternative to Reddit, come check out infosec.pub! It hosts a number of communities including one I’ve stood up for / !

ed209,

@shellsharks For me, the power of Reddit is that I can talk to a community of people who all share some interest or life experience. In many of the Lemmy community, there are just no people. Despite everybody being frustrated with API changes, nobody actually wanted to leave.

For example, places like r/Narcolepsy are very valuable because it's such a rare disorder, yet there I can talk to tons of other narcoleptics. The lemmy.world has 3 posts total.

I know it's kind of a self fulfilling prophecy but I don't know a great solution. I have been meaning to check out some of the more active Lemmy instances, so I will check out the guide!

@ed209 @shellsharks

In the early days of Reddit the founders would post things they found interesting to generate traffic. That said they had a reason to because they wanted to grow their company/platform.

Lemmy has a lot less of that, but these things take time, and dedication from the few. If API's weren't so locked down you could mirror them but I don't see that happening any time soon.

Best solution I guess is post interesting things till people show up sadly.

shellsharks,

@AssaultPepper @ed209 Yeah I loved Reddit back when and honestly would still get a lot of use out of it if I were to drag myself back there. I’m attempting a principled stand and trying to build something useful on the Fediverse. So as Ty said, I’m attempting to dedicate myself to this side and turn it into something more. Some communities (e.g. cybersecurity) are better poised to achieve this in shorter order. Smaller, more niche communities def have a harder grind to do it.

ed209,

@shellsharks @AssaultPepper I 100% agree with the 'be the change'. But also that some of us still have to fall back to the Red Site to fill in the gaps. If it wasn't for r/Narcolepsy I would probably just delete my account.
