Fediverse Question 🎶👀:

I'm not a fan of YouTube,
and certainly not of Google (as you might have noticed...), but one thing I'm addicted to YouTube for is instrumental long playlists of music to work.
I. Need. It :blobcatheadphones:🎵

Since I'm always looking for new ways to deGooglelify my life:

Do you know of any PeerTube equivalent for this?
Are there any instrumental long playlists/mixes for work on any PeerTube instances?
Or maybe another Fediverse platform would be preferable for this?

>

ed209,

The fedeverse music options are very limited at the moment, I'm really hoping this will change.

I'd be curious to see a tips/list of good creators on from you at some point!

It's very frustrating to watch all the @frameworkcomputer 16 reviews take off points because its a bit less performant, more noisy, and more expensive than competing laptops, but they don't take off points for other models for repairability, sustainability, and upgradability. Plus only some reviewers mentioned these were not Golden Units. What the Framework team has pulled off is basically a miracle, and they should be able to address many of these issues with minor upgrades and software.

Tiny Mastodon Tip to Verify Yourself :verified:🐘:

The checkmark icons on Mastodon are not official. They are simply custom instance icons people add to their name, like I have on mine, usually for fun :official_verified: :verifiedpurple: :verified_flashing: :blobcatverified:

But, there is a way to verify
yourself on Mastodon! And it’s completely free! :awesome:

It works by providing a proof of ownership of a website you control. This is especially important for organizations to show followers their account is official.

HOW TO ❓

  1. On desktop, go to Preferences > Public profile, then click on the “Verification” tab at the top ✔

  2. Click on “Copy” to copy the HTML code containing a link to your Mastodon profile.

  3. Go to the website page you control and paste the code somewhere in the HTML code of the page.

In the HTML code, you can keep the hyperlink on the “Mastodon” word as it is per default, or you can attach it to a social media icon for example :mastodon:

Alternatively, you can make this link invisible (like I did on mine) and simply place this code within your website's head:
<link href="FULL-LINK-TO-YOUR-MASTODON-ACCOUNT" rel="me"> :blobboo:

  1. Once your website is up and updated, copy the full link to the page where you pasted your Mastodon account link.

  2. Back to your Mastodon account, go to Preferences > Public profile, and here look for the section "Extra fields"

  3. Paste your page's link in a “Content” field and “Label” it as you wish. It could be labelled “Website” or “Personal Page” or anything you like!

  4. Click on the “Save changes” button at the bottom :blocky_white_cursor:

  5. Your verified link(s) should appear in green on your Mastodon profile page once it is validated (this could take a few hours to resolve so be patient).

  6. Magic!✨

ed209,

@Em0nM4stodon I think this feature is not discussed enough, and is confusing to newbies like me. Thanks!

ed209, to privacy

I'm sure people are aware of this, but @Em0nM4stodon has a bunch of great blog posts on and which you can find here:
https://controlaltdelete.technology/articles/easy-practical-privacy-tips-for-everyone.html
https://controlaltdelete.technology/articles/the-mastodons-guide-to-the-fediverse.html

One big thing I would add: If you must use F*cebook, you can disable most/all of the algorithmic recommendations with the following uBlock Origin custom rules:

www.facebook.com#:contains("Suggested for you"):upward(6)
facebook.com#:has-text(/Reels and short videos/)
www.facebook.com#:contains("Follow"):upward(6):upward(6))

These can be a bit of a moving target but I'll try and keep these up to date!

ed209,

@Em0nM4stodon Thanks for the boost! I hate algorithmic content and hate it even more when I can't disable it!

If you’re interested in checking out a -based alternative to Reddit, come check out infosec.pub! It hosts a number of communities including one I’ve stood up for / !

https://infosec.pub/c/cybersecurity

ed209,

@shellsharks For me, the power of Reddit is that I can talk to a community of people who all share some interest or life experience. In many of the Lemmy community, there are just no people. Despite everybody being frustrated with API changes, nobody actually wanted to leave.

For example, places like r/Narcolepsy are very valuable because it's such a rare disorder, yet there I can talk to tons of other narcoleptics. The lemmy.world has 3 posts total.

I know it's kind of a self fulfilling prophecy but I don't know a great solution. I have been meaning to check out some of the more active Lemmy instances, so I will check out the guide!

#lemmy #fediverse

ed209,

@shellsharks @AssaultPepper I 100% agree with the 'be the change'. But also that some of us still have to fall back to the Red Site to fill in the gaps. If it wasn't for r/Narcolepsy I would probably just delete my account.

Does the app you use to

ed209,

@Em0nM4stodon Interestingly, the :rainbowdance: doesn't work. Maybe missing on my instance or Elk?

Edit: weird, it worked when I did it.

malwaretech, to random

A while back I wrote a couple of blog posts about how I think LLMs will be a net negative (at least in the near term), due to the extreme overhyping giving people unrealistic expectations of their ability. The direct result will be an overall degrade in internet usability as people begin flooding platforms with low quality spam that they erroneously believe to be high quality. Previously it was fairly easy to spot someone who doesn't know what they're talking about, but now LLMs enable them to word things convincingly enough to waste the time of even domain experts.

Even now I'm still often surprised by all the creative ways that people are finding to waste other's time. I just saw this post from one of the curl maintainers reporting that they've been receiving nonsense bug bounty reports based on LLM hallucinations, which I imagine is likely due to people trying to automate bug hunting despite lacking the understanding to confirm their finding. They reported that in one case the submission was convincing enough that they went over the code 3 times before coming to the conclusion that no bug existed and the report was likely AI generate.

ed209,

@malwaretech I recently saw an article that was probably AI generated about the Fenix 6, but the really weird part was the photo was also AI generated, of a Fenix 6 that does not, and never will exist. What a time to be alive.

What do you like better about Mastodon and the Fediverse compared to other social media?

ed209,

@Em0nM4stodon You forgot a huge one for me: I can control what my central nervous system is exposed to. I don't have to get Twitter ragebait constantly boosted by some soulless algorithm designed to ruin my mental health to generate ad revenue.

My favorite thing about is that when I add a trail, people start using it more. Many popular apps use data derived from OSM and suddenly these trails are on their maps!

    ed209,

@rasterweb Obviously, as a physicist, I can tell you there are limits to how much matter you can fit into a fixed space. Eventually you hit the limit. Now, what that limit is is up for debate.

I've been using Inkscape for over 10 years. If I had been using Illustrator for 10 years I would have paid Adobe over $2,500 in "rental" fees for a subscription that stops as soon as I stop paying.

Instead I started paying $5 a month to Inkscape to help make sure we can all use it for free for as long as we want.

    ed209,

@rasterweb I wish I could walk the walk on this... maybe I'll give Darktable another shot.
