Hey @itsfoss - This you?
What a difference a year makes, huh?

Bit weird. Maybe have a lie down.

Also It's FOSS, sorry, IT'S FOSS, GETTING IRRATIONALLY ANGRY ABOUT THE SAME SOFTWARE.

@popey Hello Alan,

Not saying a user cannot install deb at all in Ubuntu 24.04.

That is not the point here.

I don't like that the ability to double click to install deb has been removed. It would have been better to provide a workaround (by having gdebi installed by default) if it was technically not possible to handle third party debs by the app store in 24.04.

Imagine suggesting a new user to use terminal or install an app just for installing Google Chrome!

@itsfoss The point I was making was not that you're saying it's impossible to install a deb.

The snarky point I was making was that a year ago you were fine recommending people install gdebi. Now you're incandescent with rage with a software choice in a product. It's all a little bit overblown.

Take a step back and think why it might not be a good idea in general to make it easy to install random debs from the internet?

On install, they run as root, and can do literally anything. 🤷

@popey @itsfoss gdebi has been around for a long time. It's like a lot of commercial FOSS sites have a long list of apps and howtos they recycle on a schedule.

The hit on 24.04 is pointless cashing in. People who don't like some things Canonical is doing, aren't paying Canonical customers, and don't have an interest in Ubuntu's future, don't need to use it. If you don't like vanilla, order chocolate.

@per_sonne @itsfoss Is a year 'quickly'? I guess in geologic terms, sure. :)

@popey @itsfoss

I've never had an issue with apt not handling dependencies?

is true it does one thing well, there's no need for 'something else' or did I miss something in the last 30 years?

popey,
@popey@mastodon.social avatar

@gregsie @itsfoss There are a significant number of desktop users who install software via the GUI, not via apt. More than you might think. It makes sense to cater to them

@popey @gregsie @itsfoss fine to wrap apt in a gui, but what’s up with all this flat pack / snap crap?

popey,
@popey@mastodon.social avatar

@taylorhayis @gregsie @itsfoss there are benefits to the new packaging systems. That you don’t know what they are, doesn’t stop that being true.

The actually disappointing thing here is the amount of adware spewed all over this page. Look at this!

First I had the annoying pop-up cookie thing, and as if the sticky video-banner at the bottom of the page wasn’t enough there’s no less than three ads with video/gif content throughout the article.

It makes the page jumpy and nearly unusable on iOS

Another IBM ad a under a heading
A Temu ad near the bottom of the article.
