Can't find People in a newly iCloud-synced Photos library. Faces have been found on my other computers and my iPhone, is the found face data not synced with iCloud?
@wplate they only sync the photos you have manually confirmed are a person. When syncing a library onto a new device it will do its own faces detection pass through everything. It will prefer your device to be asleep/locked and plugged in. You have no control, just give it a few days ¯_(ツ)_/¯
@WTL@matt I feel like I have heard that, but it doesn't make sense to me. iMessages are encrypted to ensure privacy, and iMessages can be synced through iCloud, but photo metadata cannot? The photos themselves are synced, there's less concern for privacy about the actual images?
@WTL@wplate@matt I honestly do not recall the exact reasoning, but claiming privacy does seem plausible. I know that only faces that you have confirmed are synchronized. I wonder if this is also a way to not synchronize incorrect data.
@waynedixon@WTL@wplate I honestly think a part of it is the race condition nature of it. 10 photos land in your library, sync down to your devices. Who decides which device processes them and shares the resulting data?
With end-to-end encryption it can’t happen on the server. Apple would have to let you pick a “main” device for doing this and now that’s a thing you have to manage and remember to update when you change devices, etc.
@waynedixon@matt@WTL Feels like manually tagging thousands and thousands of photos defeats the purpose of computers. 🥵 On my phone at least I don’t see a way to “confirm” the system’s automatic recognition of me.
@wplate@waynedixon@matt On your Mac in Photos, there's a “Review More Photos” option at the bottom of your photo page to go through any images of you that the system isn't sure about, which is then used to train on other photos. I did it probably last month and just now, confirmed two photos, which added four to "me". It would be nice to do that kind of thing on the iphone, but I'm not sure why it isn't possible yet. <points to Apple.com/feedback> 🤣
