Seriously this map (top especially) is… C- at best; I know elementary teachers that would fail this on the spot. Why not just list the colors in a ‘label’ box? Why are there two shades of purple? What about yellow and dried-poo yellow-brown? (if you argue ‘it’s the color they appear’, electricity isn’t yellow and oil isn’t red…) Why is there a text blurb in essentially 12pt font hiding in the great lakes/canada instead of double+ the size and at the top, centered? Why are some state capitals on the map - and in the worst color contrast possible (see: why are there two purple colors…). Also, why are they in like 10pt font? Why is oil listed twice?
For a display of just 5 items, this is pretty awful.
RIGHT? It’s almost like it was designed to make you puzzle over it for longer than you should have to. The second image is easier to digest-- It’s labeled properly, and you can sort of tell that areas would overlap.
First one could be redeemed with a little bit of information hierarchy, but it’s pretty obtuse as-is.
I also have to question the accuracy of it all, especially since plenty of homes up north use multiple sources (e.g. natural gas furnace and wood fireplace)
Honestly, I don’t get why anyone would want their timezone not to be a round hour. Surely the extra complexity and increased chances of mistakes isn’t worth it? Timezones are bad enough when they’re a round number. And as the map shows, many places don’t match their geological position, anyway, so it’s not like being 15-30 minutes off is a big deal.
It looks like that entire area, which is the size of Albania, only has about fifty people living in it. They're so far from everything else and there's few enough of them that they can just agree to do their own thing
There used to be a telephone exchange there between Adelaide and Perth 100+ years ago. I think the theory is that the time zone was there to prevent confusion at the exchange, especially since they would otherwise have sunrise at like 4:20am. Since there are only three or four communities there they have kept the local time zone and use it for local business. It has an official code (ACWST), but it is not officially recognised by the West Australian government nor the Australian government when it comes to timing things for government purposes.
It’s also used by a single town on the South Australian side of the border.
The top 10 most polluting countries according to the IPCC: Qatar — 37.05 per capita Kuwait — 23.49 per capita Saudi Arabia — 19.39 per capita Canada — 16.85 per capita United States — 15.74 per capita Germany — 9.7 per capita China — 7.72 per capitaSpain — 6.09 per capita France — 5.02 per capita Thailand — 4.05 per capita
Greenhouse gas emissions by China are the largest of any country in the world both in production and consumption terms, and stem mainly from coal burning in China, including coal-fired power stations, coal mining,[3] and blast furnaces producing iron and steel.[4] When measuring production-based emissions, China emitted over 14 gigatonnes (Gt) CO2eq of greenhouse gases in 2019,[5] 27% of the world total.[6][7] When measuring in consumption-based terms, which adds emissions associated with imported goods and extracts those associated with exported goods, China accounts for 13 gigatonnes (Gt) or 25% of global emissions.[8]
The source of the map says “National Cumulative”, this why I said I think it means historical emissions and not emissions of today. Also, a more just way to measure it would be for consumption, not emissions, a lot of the emissions generated on china is generated on the manufacturing of consumers goods to be used on the first world.
Pretty sure is historical emissions data. China and India have like 20 years of emissions, that are still pretty low when accounting by per capita or by “imported emissions”*, while United States and Europe have been producing carbon emissions for more that a century now.
imported emissions are emissions caused by industry that is going to export the products to be consumed elsewhere.
No offense, but this is a horrible map and it is just as bad as the first time it was posted today: US + Canada (why are they grouped in with these cherry picked European countries?) and a dozen European countries on top of giving no context of the person’s proficiency in the language, the whole thing just doesn’t really make a lot of sense, if you wanted to do a map of the US Canada and Europe do something remotely coherent like a map of leaders of NATO countries, feels like this is just made by a North American who just picked random European countries they thought would be interesting.
Is that really worth it if in winter sun wont be up till 11 during the weeks that are scientifically known to already cause a depressive mood? (Blue monday)
EDIT; blue monday is apparently labeled pseudo science, still i much prefer a dark summer night with garden lights over waking up what is essentially the middle of the natural night during the colder months.
This morning the sun rose at 6:48. This afternoon it will set at 16:38.
Few people who work 9-5 are going to benefit from it being light at around 6:30 any day of the week (7:30 is still enough for a morning run), yet on the weekends the extra hour to make it light until 19:00 will be so much more valuable for meeting with friends or going out with family etc.
Here’s the thing. In the US if your state wants to stop changing their clocks, the can do so right now. Arizona and Hawaii are already not changing their clocks. The problem is the people that want permanent DST. That takes an act of congress.
My suggestion. Get the legislators to stop with the clock changing bullshit, then get the employers to shift the working hours so people can have their extra daylight in the summer.
I mean, they all have to deform something, mathematically speaking. Usually Antarctica is not picked as the least deformed area, though.
I wonder if this would be better centered around the north pole. I guess a normal non-polar projection would do the job too, since we’re very familiar with them and the fact they wrap around.
Can’t express how happy I am to finally be coming out of the deep dark. Seattle is a lot better in the summer when the days are like 16 hours long. I love it.
Genuinely surprised to see that Eluveitie beats out Celtic Frost.
Edit: Just looked at the stats, and wow, it's not even close: 872,935 to 120,157. That's a real wtf. Insert Principal Skinner "...it's the children who are wrong."jpg
