Can’t read a map or add up? Don’t worry, we’ve always let technology do the boring stuff

Another rather vapid column from the Gruaniad. Probably someone who has never had the joy of exploring an area on paper before venturing there or even understands the real need to be able to manipulate simple quantities in your head.

The future beckons…

@Wen Don’t be mean. Martha is correct. “What if AI and modern tech is taking on the tasks that humans were never suited to in the first place?” And it is clear that Martha is not suited for thinking. 🙃

@DanielleVossebeld I’ll be mean if I want to :-)

@Wen I've never used a sat nav or google maps in the wild. So there.
I hate this nonsense. It almost makes me want to fast forward to the apocalypse, when being able to count and find your way around without a device wedged under your eyeballs will be the difference between living and dying.

@Wen "the medium of the assembly line". I recall when robots "freed" thousands of semi-skilled workers from that tedium to allow them the "freedom" of being on the dole for the rest of their lives. Hardly inspiring.
The tine of the article is of the same kind as that of The Mighty Micro, a book which I panned as part of the critical thinking component of my degree.

@Wen urgh, what a poor article. Luckily most of the BTL comments are sensible.

@thesweetcheat

I am never sure whether the Guardian uses these to humiliate certain ‘writers’ (the comments are open), or simply as a means to hide the fact that they don’t permit comments on much.

thesweetcheat,
@thesweetcheat@toot.community avatar

@Wen yeah, they are quite variable on when they open the comments. Even on weird areas like some football reports are closed for comments.

@thesweetcheat

I suspect that in part it is cost. Moderators need to be paid. But then in other cases it is embarrassment. Typically when one of their p*ss poor articles on Scotland is open to comment it is torn apart BTL. They don't do it very often.
