davealvarado,

@dhrystone is it really a good idea to call a skill you don't have dumb? I mean sure, you don't 10-key well.

@davealvarado Is it really a good idea to misread a post claiming technology is dumb and believe that in fact it meant that not having a skill was dumb? Reread the post.
Also, I just noticed that one of the replies I made on the post, to someone else, is unlisted, so you obviously didn’t read it. What I said was that I’m an ex tenkey data entry operator (proof machine) for a bank and that I don’t see the need for two of the same sort of key on a keyboard.
That is despite being at one time able to key in a sixteen digit credit card number in less than a second and a half.
If you need to tenkey stuff, you can get a separate detachable keypad that can be put away when needed to save desktop space. Beyond that, if you need to enter numbers you can use the numeric keypad.

@dhrystone I have a second layer for my Moonlander with many things, but I typically use it as a numpad to enter a pin for my yubikey.

dhrystone,
@dhrystone@techhub.social avatar

@becomingwisest THERE we go! Pin longer than would take to enter on the regular number keys?

becomingwisest,
@becomingwisest@hachyderm.io avatar

@dhrystone 8 digits, easy to jam out with four fingers, while the top row numbers would take me lookinggn at them and making sure I hit the right ones.

Though dropping gpg/ssh on the yubikey, to using a file/Secure Enclave approach would be even faster, and I could drop to one layer.

It’s “fun”/“righteous” for me to use the yubikey.

dhrystone,

@becomingwisest I mean, a separate layer would work, because my real problem with it is the wasted desktop real estate versus the fact that number keys already exist on most other smaller keyboards (ie the numpad is unnecessary duplication). But I’d definitely enter eight numbers from the regular row.

@becomingwisest This thing has been gathering dust forever. Mint condition. Seven days a week in front of the PC up to 12-15 hours a day, spreadsheets all over the shop, and never used this.

@becomingwisest Just… can’t. Like the 20+ keyboards I have knocking around here that I know I’ll never use again. I’ll freely admit I’m a hoarder with a keeb problem. Don’t even ask about my artisan collection..

@dhrystone so this and others can go elsewhere on display so you can enjoy your passion.

@dhrystone
You must not be a number person

dhrystone,
@dhrystone@techhub.social avatar

@geillescas Oh, I am. Ex data entry operator for a bank, actually. I just don't see the need for two of the same sort of key on a keyboard. Already got numbers 1-0 right across the top. Entering special characters in Windows can be done in other ways. And I have a separate numpad purchased a couple of years ago which I literally, literally have never ever used.

@dhrystone Yeah, a separate numpad is probably better than a built-in one when a numpad is needed for accounting, typing special characters on Windows, etc.
