I’m getting really sick of the keyboard halves moving around on my desk as the day progresses. So I grab some cardboard and a tape measure, and some calipers and figured out what it’s going to take to 3D print a spreader bar to hold them in position.

Unfortunately, I don’t have the ability to print some thing that is almost 60 cm long. So I will have to figure out some kind of joinery to do it in two halves.

A close-up of the index card. It has rounded corners and a light dot grid. On it are a series of circles with measurement distances between them. There’s a note about the diameter of the feet of the keyboard, and an annotation about the size of my 3D printer’s, print bed.

Who's that girl? Glove80?

@AAMfP yes. Glove 80 w/ dvorak layout and black keys.

Technologically its way better than the Kinesis Advantage 360 pro, but the ergonomics of the kinesis’s tall keys are slightly better for my hands. Very torn because the things that frustrate me about the kinesis Really frustrate me.

@masukomi
Lovely. I was thinking about it. In the end I've bought the from and I'm thinking about Colemak-DH layout.

@AAMfP interesting. Hadn’t seen that one. After experiencing the keywells on Kinesis and the MoErgo i don’t want to go back to flat keyboards unless there’s something really compelling about it.

@masukomi
I was very well tempted by the Glove80, but too expensive, plus custom fees and VAT would've become way too much.
Also, I've preferred free/open software and hardware.
Still, Glove80 seems a great keyboard, indeed.

Just realized 🤦‍♀️ that instead of modeling this for a 3d printer, and figuring out joinery, and then dealing with the inevitable imprecision of the results, and having to adjust it all i could just grab the drill and a 12mm bit, and apply it to some of our scrap wood.

I don't have a 12mm bit, but i have a 1/2" drill bit ( grumbles about non-metric USA), and that's close enough for this purpose.

@masukomi you could always cut it in PrusaSlicer using the dovetail option.

@mfraz74 ooh. TIL. Thanks. Alas, (just hit enter on separate toot) i have realized that this would be way easier to make by simply applying a drill to some scrap wood. ;)

@mfraz74 but then i just realized i wouldn't like the result because of the height of the wood i have. I don't have a planer, so Yay, now i know an easy way to make a dovetail. thanks. :D

@masukomi

Two little 3D-ptinted cradles, and a simple length of dowel from the hardware store.

Job done.

@masukomi I’ve seen people use nano tape to hold halves in place. Strong double-sided stuff, it is. Depending on whther or not you use the keyboard elsewhere, it may be an option. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B085LLP69D
Gotta love a 3DP solution though 😄

@BrokenFlows that's a good idea i hadn't considered. Sometimes i like to take my keyboard off the desk to have some space to do real world things. ;)

nice thing about the 3D printed solution is that the spreader bar can be wicked thin and doesn't really interfere with the random things i place between the halves during the day.

@masukomi the magic of 3D printer solutions! I’m sure it’ll work out well 😄
